gkpy, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

managed to shift my idle browsing here. though i was kind of weening off reddit slowly over the past years. with lemmy exploding it has brought back some of that feeling of exploring and looking for communities i was missing on reddit haha

sadly nebula.tv sends you to reddit for comments on their exclusives, that is one holdover that is also unlikely to go away…

cmhickman358, in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?

As a classification I think I would call it a Monarchic Oligarchy, or maybe a Cyclical Monarchic Oligarchy, but maybe as a more common term I would say something like the Council of Monarchy or something along those lines.

moobythegoldensock, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

You need to figure out:

  • What you like
  • What you’re good at (or can become good at with training/a degree)
  • What people will pay you to do

If you like something, you’re good at it, and people will pay you to do it, that’s a career. Stick with it your entire life.

If you’re good at something and people will pay you to do it but you don’t like it, that’s a job. Work it to pay the bills, but don’t be afraid to jump ship as soon as something better comes along.

If you like something and are good at it but no one will pay you to do it, that’s a hobby. You’ll need to supplement that with a job to get by.

If you like something and people will pay you for it but you’re not good at it, fake it ‘till you make it, my friend.

state_electrician, in What's your real-life superpower?

When baking, I pick the right amount of butter, down to 2 gram accuracy.

Nah, I created a Lemmy account at the start of June (at least the Jerboa installation date says that) and uninstalled boost a few days later. Only checked in on Reddit from time to time with libreddit, to have a look at the John Oliver party.

I deleted or mass-edited all my comments and sent an GDPR request. Only thing left after that is the account deletion.

Didn’t want to give them any traffic anymore, so I avoided everything about it.

I know what time is it pretty much all the time, with tolerance of 5 minutes, usually I’m in tolerance of ~3 minutes or less.

667,
@667@kbin.social avatar

I’m like that with elapsed time, also to within about 5 mins.

Ask me what I did yesterday? No fucking clue.

pollocks, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

I don’t know where this quote originated. I first heard it from my future SO and it goes something like this

“It is human nature to assume that once we have found the answer, we will find peace. Instead, one must find peace first, then the answer will come.”

Intentionally, only when a search directs me to a Reddit thread. Unfortunately, it’s still a great resource in that regard.

Unintentionally, habit has me typing reddit.com before I realize what I’m doing. Otherwise, I try to stay here.

FinallyDebunked, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?
@FinallyDebunked@slrpnk.net avatar

I ditched Linux after realizing my Nvidia card was just gonna sit there and rot

l3mming,

What does that mean?

Are you talking about about the lack of games on Linux? Because that makes no sense. Check out protondb.com

And if your GPU is still only lukewarm, Stable Diffusion runs better in Linux than Windows.

FinallyDebunked,
@FinallyDebunked@slrpnk.net avatar

I really don’t want to delve into details, but even when I made gpu work there was noticeable drop in performance in games compared to when I ran them under Windows

Heavybell,

Could’ve been a long time ago. Nvidia driver support hasn’t always been great.

bionicjoey, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

For me, downvote typically means either “this adds nothing to the discussion” or “this was made in bad faith”

Corkyskog,
@Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes. I upvote stuff I disagree with constantly. That’s because I view the purpose to promote content that furthers discussion.

Hairyblue, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@Hairyblue@kbin.social avatar

Nope. No interest.

RedditRefugeeTom, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

Simple Plan. They had some popular songs, but looking back, their lyrics were/are cringy. But on the upswing, they had good intention in them.

EtnaAtsume,

Oh NO. I recognized the name even and was like “I know that song…don’t I?”

Ugh. Yeah. I do.

wildcardology, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

My reddit usage is 99% on Boost for reddit and 1% on web. Since Boost doesn’t work right anymore. I don’t use it 99% anymore.

Paws,

Exactly the same here. I’m eagerly awaiting the Boost for Lemmy app!

EtnaAtsume,

My usage pattern too. I did nip on today to post/rant on some calorie counting subs just because I valued a faster answer over a quality one.

Norspang, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“The spaceships hung in the air, in much the same ways that bricks don’t” - Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy

I use this quote a lot when doing D&D Campaign prepping. It’s a fantastic example of a non-sensical sentence that somehow completely explains the subject

CrabAndBroom,

Some of my favourite Douglas Adams ones:

Let’s think the unthinkable, let’s do the undoable. Let us prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

The major problem—one of the major problems, for there are several—one of the many major problems with governing people is that of whom you get to do it; or rather of who manages to get people to let them do it to them. To summarize: it is a well-known fact that those people who must want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen.

God’s Final Message to His Creation: 'We apologize for the inconvenience."

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, ‘As pretty as an airport.’

CanadaPlus,

I often think of this one as well.

It parses fine really, there is a (possibly empty) set of things that float in the air, and the spaceship is one of them, but bricks are not. It’s not nonsensical, it’s just a creative twist on a common idiom (“in much the same way a brick does”) that’s so unexpected it seems silly.

I also think of the later books where Arthur perfects the art of falling and missing the ground sometimes.

xthexder,
@xthexder@l.sw0.com avatar

Tagging on, since my favorite quote is also from Douglas Adams:

This is rather as if you imagine a puddle waking up one morning and thinking, ‘This is an interesting world I find myself in — an interesting hole I find myself in — fits me rather neatly, doesn’t it? In fact it fits me staggeringly well, must have been made to have me in it!’ This is such a powerful idea that as the sun rises in the sky and the air heats up and as, gradually, the puddle gets smaller and smaller, frantically hanging on to the notion that everything’s going to be alright, because this world was meant to have him in it, was built to have him in it; so the moment he disappears catches him rather by surprise. I think this may be something we need to be on the watch out for.

  • Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

It’s stuck with me as a perspective I have. It’s up to you to make things happen the way you want them to, and certain things shouldn’t be taken for granted.

AdmiralShat,

I love Douglas Adams

lugal, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

Disagreement is maybe best communicated by the absence of an upvote?

There is a quote “You can not not communicate” but on the internet you can. If I get no upvotes, I don’t know if no one has seen it or people actively ignored it and it’s a bad advice to feel disagreed on when no upvotes.

I personally feel frustrated when I get downvotes but no comments because I don’t know why I’m downvoted. Some instances here in the lemmyverse (like mine) don’t have downvotes enabled so I don’t even see downvotes.

I think it’s best to engage in a conversation if you disagree in a constructive way and downvote without comment if you feel this is beyond help.
