I heard one once that goes like “a fool does what he hates, a wise man does what he loves, but a great man learns to love what is necessary.”
I think I am butchering the original phrasing which is probably why I can’t find any source for this quote. But I think about it a lot.

dudebro,

What if you hate it but you’re really really good at it?

“One is free from depression when they derive their self worth from the truth of their own feelings, and not from the posession of certain things or qualities.” - Alice Miller, The Drama of The Gifted Child

Sounds nice, doesn’t work.

I_Has_A_Hat,

I truly feel depressed because of my lack of things. Specifically money. Money is the things.

dudebro,

It’s tough to do this when others derive our self worth from possessions.

Unfortunately, a lot of self-sufficiency quotes fall short when you want other people in your life. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way.

Im28xwa, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

Hmm interesting question never thought about it, maybe both/varies from post to post

Hikermick, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions

dudebro,

I’d say that depends on who you ask.

I’m sure the fascists don’t have good intentions for the necks under their bootheels.

Double_A, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
@Double_A@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Depends on what kind of “I don’t agree”. If somebody asks for people’s favorite food, I’m not going to dislike all other answers… But if it’s a more serious question, and an answer just has a really bad take that I don’t agree with, that’s getting a dislike.

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

d00phy, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

I enjoy reading thoughtful content that I disagree with. I downvote based on perceived intent of the comment or post. If it’s just mean, hateful, trolling, wildly off-topic, or anything like that it will get a downvote.

My father, a union organiser: “You can love the company all you like, but the company will never love you back.”

Stood me in good stead down the years.

dudebro,

That’s only partially true, especially if you think about the definition of ‘company.’

It is completely possible to be in a company that cares about you. Odds are it won’t be a publicly-traded one, though.

sunbeam60,

You’ve got to go through a round of redundancies/layoffs to learn this. No amount of telling some freebie-munching programmer will teach them. Source: I was a freebie-munching programmer.

And the acceptance beyond that is “… and that’s ok, it’s not the company’s job to love you, but don’t for a second be fooled into loyalty”.

bufordt,
@bufordt@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nothing at work is personal, it’s all business. If you believe it’s personal you will get taken advantage by the company.

That’s not too say that there won’t be personal issues at work, just that the company doesn’t care about anything except the business.

In addition, HR isn’t there too protect the employees, they are there to protect the company.

Therevev,

Somwhat related quote from my father in law about being a good worker:

“First year, they like you. Second year, they love you. Third year, they just start using you”

“The enemy of good is perfect.”

saberstan,

I always remembered that one as “perfect is the enemy of done.”

dudebro,

Unfortunately, people have been conflating this to mean ‘the enemy of good is doing anything significant at all.’

tryagain, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

onlinely,

Hanlon’s razor

dudebro,

Probably one of the most pretentious quotes in existence being perpetuated by pseudo-intellectuals.

tryagain,

✨✨Thanks! ✨✨

It hasn’t been that long, only few years, but it always hits me deep:

“Everyone thinks they are the hero of their own story.” - Handsome Jack

Probably not something original, but the voice acting and the scene it was in made it way more powerful than any philosopher in a book could.

dudebro,

Not everyone feels that way.

A lot of people just see themselves as support.

eggvng,

still one of my favorite video game villains!

Take your time

dudebro,

It’s the least thing you’ve got.

Anticorp, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.”

― Captain Jean-Luc Picard

dudebro,

That’s really rough to accept, but I’ve come to do so.

I still think we should do our best. Nothing hurts more than losing because we didn’t try hard enough.

xapr, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

The absence of limitations is the enemy of creativity

  • Orson Welles, I believe
dudebro,

Interesting. As much as I don’t like this, I can’t help but acknowledge it.

The ending of Evangelion talks about it.

JoeClu, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

If you wish to keep slaves, you must have all kinds of guards. The cheapest way to have guards is to have the slaves pay taxes to finance their own guards. To fool the slaves, you tell them that they are not slaves and that they have Freedom. You tell them they need Law and Order to protect them against bad slaves. Then you tell them to elect a Government. Give them Freedom to vote and they will vote for their own guards and pay their salary. They will then believe they are Free persons. Then give them money to earn, count, and spend and they will be too busy to notice the slavery they are in.” - Alexander Warbucks

dudebro,

To be fair, freedom is being able to go out in the woods and kill an animal or build a shelter or harvest a plant.

Freedom is not relying on society to help you in anything.

Catsrules,

Sounds like a lot of work to have slaves. I think I will just build me some robots.
