lemminer, in Any Nostr ppl here?

Been hearing a little about Nostr.

Are you coming from Twitter? Jack got a bag in it and shilling it real hard and to integrate it with Bitcoin.

EssentialCoffee, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

Like others have said, the things you watch are prime interests for right wing in the US. You have to train the algorithm that you don’t want it.

GoodEye8,

I think the algorithm is so distorted by right-wing engagement that it will end up recommend right-wing content, even if you actively try to avoid it. I watch youtube shorts and I always skip if it’s Shapiro, Peterson, Tate or Pierce Morgan. I also skip the moment I feel like the shorts might be right-wing. Scroll enough and eventually the algorithm will go “How about some Shapiro, Peterson, Tate or Morgan?” Give it enough time and it will always try to feed you right-wing content.

EssentialCoffee,

I suppose if you do nothing but scroll YouTube endlessly, it just starts to recommend anything to keep you in the platform.

But I’ve had an account since they started and even watch The Young Turks and C-Span here and there and almost never get anything political, let alone right wing.

My algorithm is at the point where I get Korean commercials, which is honestly fine with me.

Apytele, (edited ) in Is there an easy way to bring all my old technical posts from Reddit to Lemmy?

.

jaschen,

Thanks!!

sloonark, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

I loved Milli Vanilli when I was about 14.

ExceptionalCow,

Damn, me too and I was in the same age.

gripworks,

Showing my age here, but I remember waiting with my friend for “Blame it on the Rain” to play on the radio so I could tape it.

sloonark,

I bought the album (on tape).

Pagliacci, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Pagliacci@lemmy.ml avatar

This line from Schindler’s List always stuck with me:

“Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.”

The context is that at the end of the movie Schindler is distraught thinking of how many more he could have saved if he just did certain things differently, like selling a ring and using that money to hire another Jewish worker. One of the people he saved tells him the above line.

It’s stuck with me for two reasons, I think.

First, it’s an interesting perspective on individuality. Each person has their own unique perspective of the world. When that person dies, that perspective is gone forever. An entire universe dies with them, never to be seen again. I think that’s a powerful way to view the individual.

Second, it’s a reminder that we do what we can, and while it may be imperfect, it’s enough. You can’t save everyone, just live well and help those you can in the capacity that you can. If you save one of those people, you’ve saved the world.

turtle, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?

Being young and exploring an abandoned farm area quite late at night, entering a hut with a friend, the door jammed as we entered and we got stuck in small box like room with caged windows for a few hours till someone heard us.

Just traumatising childhood things.

stringere,

Neighborhood kids locked me and another in a folder down camper trailer. Got rescued same as you: someone heard us screaming.

Neighborhood kid chained me to a tree in the middle of the woods. I now have a deep gravelly voice from yelling myself hoarse until my dad found me.

It was a very Lord of the Flies 80s suburban childhood.

turtle,

We out here with similar childhoods huh

There’s a little more to my story but it’s a little darker so I kept it short n sweet

TheRealKuni,

Well now you’ve got my morbid curiosity running wild!

turtle,

We are locked in and were told by older kids they were gonna set the hut on fire x

Hence the screaming.

charlytune,

Wtf. That’s genuinely terrifying. I’m glad someone heard you!

WeebLife, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Think for yourself and question authority.” It’s on a TOOL album.

Lifecoach5000, in You know any cool, lesser-known or even made up phrases?

Not a phrase but I’ve been saying the word “absolute” instead of “absolutely”. I’m a legend in my own mind.

can, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

You have more experiences, true, but some things can help you feel like you’re experiencing them for the first time. Any experience with psychedelics?

luthis,

Psychedelics made me realise i had forgotten the novelty of childhood. If i had never tried them, maybe id never have realised…

toastio,

Psychedelics have helped me to retain those feelings long after the trip has ended (some indefinitely, at least at time of writing this). I never appreciated a cool breeze until one of those experiences (I always wanted to cover up and shield myself from it before). Now, whenever I feel a cold wind or cool breeze, I appreciate it so much more because of that past experience.

Foxfire, in What is Lemmy's Favorite Beverage? [Ranked-Choice Poll]
@Foxfire@pawb.social avatar

Just voted! Looks like water and coffee are going strong so far, which I also ended up voting for on top too. Lots of super sugary stuff, honestly having an herbal tea, coffee, or sparkling water I feel much better after vs a soda or juice.

Oneeightnine, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?
@Oneeightnine@feddit.uk avatar

Reasons to be Cheerful isn’t necessarily a ‘leftist’ podcast (One of the hosts is the former leader of the Labour party in Ed Milliband), but the show spends a lot of time talking about leftist ideas to improve the world.
