Nemo, in Is it a good idea to enable "show bot accounts" on lemmy?

There are many helpful bots, like the one that corrects community links to be instance-neutral.

lemminer,

Question: Are those “bot accounts” flaired to identify them?

burgersc12,

I think any true “bot” would be flaired correctly. I blocked any bots I did not like, including @bot

I think any true “bot” would be flaired correctly.

Just FYI: The bot checkbox an opt-in thing with no enforcement, so it’s basically guaranteed that some developer will eventually either forget to tick the box or deliberately choose not to. These are still early days for Lemmy, so who knows how the situation will eventually evolve… but for now it’s basically the wild west.

yggdar, in Breakfast suggestions?

Welcome to the club of lactose intolerance! If, like me, you really like dairy, there is a very easy way to cheat the system… (Seriously, how would anyone survive without cheese?)

You can get lactase tablets. Those are little pills full of lactase, which is the protein that breaks down lactose into digestible simple sugars. All you have to do is take a lactase tablet when you eat anything with lactose, and you can continue to live your life like before.

Lactose intolerance is not black and white either. You may have some tolerance left, which may be enough to eat your cereal with milk, if that is the inly lactose you have during the day. Your tolerance can also fluctuate over time. For example, the first time I had an issue with lactose it only lasted a few weeks.

datendefekt,
@datendefekt@lemmy.ml avatar

I always have tablets with me! Every time I’m eating out and am not 100% sure that the food is vegan, I take a table just to be sure. I can imagine that cooks slip in butter or cream to improve the taste.

SexualPolytope,
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I can have a bit of milk. But I have it with coffee, and any more than that gives me gas. I’ll talk to my doctor about lactase pills, thank you for letting me know.

yggdar,

My pleasure! And unless the rules are different where you live, you don’t need to see a doctor or get a prescription. Here (Belgium) you can easily get them from pharmacies or online.

SexualPolytope,
@SexualPolytope@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s over the counter here, so I don’t NEED to see a doctor. But my doctor is a friend, so doesn’t hurt to consult for free.

failsafe5000, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper
@failsafe5000@lemmy.world avatar

Kindle Scribe is also a good option if you want to be able to write on PDFs, just need to use the Sent to Kindle feature.

pavnilschanda, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper
@pavnilschanda@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say tablet with GoodNotes installed, since you can easily write on the pages. With e-readers you can’t immediately read your notes

stick2urgunz88, in How often do you brush your teeth?
@stick2urgunz88@lemmy.world avatar

Brush in the morning to keep your friends, brush at night to keep your teeth.

agamemnonymous, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?
@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Lots of people buy Emotional Support Animal vests online and think that means they can bring them into restaurants. Nope, FDA is very clear about it: trained service animals only. ESAs actually have almost no special privileges over regular pets. Basically the only exceptions they get are against pet policies/fees on leases.

Kettellkorn,

People who do that I find so annoying and honestly pathetic. It’s like they think they’re better than everyone else and can do whatever they want.

Trae,

I watched a guy get kicked out of the Costco food court area because he kept saying his dog was an “licensed” ESA. The Costco manager busted out a little card with the relevant federal laws for a service animal and listed all the rules the dog was breaking by lunging at people, not staying under the table, and barking it’s head off at a real service animal that was just sitting calmly under it’s owners table like nothing was going on around it.

Even if your dog is truly a licensed and trained service animal, but you’ve allowed it to continously break all the rules it’s supposed to follow in a private business. They can still kick you out if your dog doesn’t behave like it’s supposed to be behaving. That’s why it’s a big no no to interact with working animals with their vests on and for owners to let their working animals to break the rules repeatedly by misbehaving and never correcting them.

NightOwl, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

RSS to get a typical feed that people have become accustomed to. Set up RSS from sources you want to see then see. You get to see more instead of what individuals cherry picked for whatever reason.

pensivepangolin,

This is the best way, for sure. And there are a lot of really great selfhosted projects for doing so!

whynotzoidberg, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

I didn’t see it mentioned specifically — Mosquito Barrier is a black garlic-based spray that works super well. I’ve used it at high concentrations to handle a yard.

I also use Essentria IC3, another non-toxic-to-mammals spray. Works better than the Mosquito Barrier, I think.

Both are safe for people and pets, and I think both smell pretty decent to boot.

Poggers, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

I always get myself to do things I don’t want to by thinking “Future-me is going to be much happier when he finds that present-me did this already.”

Helps me find the motivation to exercise, make myself a good cup of coffee instead of a kcup, do the dishes after dinner, lots of things. And past me is such a bro, saved me from present-me having to do those things.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

I’ve tried this before but it hasn’t worked for me so far unfortunately :-/ I thunk it’s because my brain sees tomorrow-me to be a different and detached person…

MiloSquirrel, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

For me if I ever look up warhammer 40k it immediately starts sending me losers like quartering or other channels like him.

Like, bo youtube, I don’t want to hear about how feminism and “wokes” are ruining warhammer. I also don’t want to be sent Sargon of Carl videos. Uhg. Lmao

Nemo, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

90% of willpower is preparation. Arrange your life to make the things you should do easier and the things you should avoid less convenient.

Example: To avoid sleeping in, or worse, dicking around on my phone instead of sleeping or getting up, I put my phone to charge on the other side of the bedroom.

Another: I put a speaker in my kitchen to listen to music when I wash dishes. A lot easier to wash just those last few pots, even if I feel like I’m ready for a break, if I want to finish the song.

SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah I have been trying to do this and it has helped with my productivity. The problem is, it might make it easier for you to do but that is precisely because you are minimising the amount of willpower you have to use to get those things done. Which I think os what’s keeping me weak

MrShiftyCloak,

Two comments.

  • I would try and avoid negative self talk (weak) as it can really just reenforce guilt/shame. The classic example I learned in therapy was should statements. When you think/say I should have… It can bring alot of negativity but it’s usually easy to change it to a could or would statement. I would have or could have xyz. Would/could can be a slippery slope to excuse/procrastinate things but it’s okay to legitimately give your self a break when the circumstances warrant it. Brains need downtime, you don’t have to be filling 100% of your day
  • doing prep work isn’t cheapening your willpower as long as your consistent and apply it to everything and not just the easy things. Another trick I learned is to try and break a task down into the smallest step you can do to make progress. Step one could literally be get a pad of paper, or change into work out clothes. It makes taking the next step easier and also is kinda like “Well I already have the pen and paper I might as well get writing” or “I’m changed so I might as well do something” even if it’s just a walk or jog. But again the key is consistentcy.
SubArcticTundra,
@SubArcticTundra@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh thats a good point, turning a ‘should have’ into a ‘could have’ actually sounds really empowering because it must remove some of the guilt. And the taking the smallest step strategy sounds really helpful too – it reminds me of the concept of ‘non-zero days’ I read about a while back that I really have found effective

jbrains, in What are the most appropriate responses to some very uncomfortable and awkward questions?

“Is it that you can’t have children?”

Reply that never fails: “What was your intention when you asked that question?”

ImInPhx, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

Not exactly what you’re asking but possibly helpful-

I’ve found that ‘pairing’ the item of resistance to another established habit has been helpful. A decent example is putting my gym stuff on the bathroom counter. I have the habit of brushing my teeth in the morning and now I have my exercise clothes where I’m guaranteed to see them. It’s harder to make excuses and at this point you just gotta commit.

This might be more what you’re asking about-

I got the pairing idea from a great series on procrastination, Solving the Procrastination Puzzle by Tim Pychyl. The speaker takes the approach that resistance is not a matter of will power but a matter of emotional regulation. I recommend checking it out!

I listened to it on Waking Up but you might be able to find it elsewhere. Here’s a link to where I listened, free 30 days no credit card needed. (There is no incentive for me, just sharing what helped me) dynamic.wakingup.com/pack/PK0AA14?source=content …

Gamera8ID, in What are the best fediverse alternatives to youtube?
@Gamera8ID@kaijus.us avatar

IDK where content creators should go, but as a viewer Piped looks promising. (I only discovered it because of @PipedLinkBot.)

JCSpark,

Pipes is a great way to view YT content without logging in. No ads, clean interface, and you can log in to save playlists via cookies on your local machine, so no interaction with the server. It doesn’t use the YouTube API, so Google can’t say much.

Cortell, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

When I was in grade 2 I had an old substitute teacher tell us a story about how he trained his willpower by setting an alarm every night at 3 am and when it went off he’d do 10 jumping jacks.

I tried it that night, got out of bed and did 2 jumping jacks before realizing this was the dumbest thing ever. If I had the willpower to get out of bed in the middle of the night to exercise I already had the willpower in the first place.

But weirdly enough ever since that night I’ve been able to get out of bed on the first alarm
