PowerCrazy, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

What specifically do you want lemmy mods to “stop?” What kind of lies are they spreading? What do you consider disinformation. Complaining that your world view isn’t being catered to is a lot less useful then pointing out specific things you find sus.

I don’t think the format had anything to do with it, considering it was much more like Lemmy is now when I first joined 11 years ago and I’ve seen the same decline in other social mediums that didn’t share formats as Reddit. It’s just what happens when you get enough people together in one place. The abundance of dumb fucks and bad actors simply take over.

5Chex, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

I’m currently in grad school and am reading a ton of PDFs. My iPad and Apple Pencil paired with the app LiquidText has been AMAZING! I actually subscribed to their pro plan so that my papers and annotations would sync between my devices.

I can’t stress enough how much use I get out of the combo and how productive it allows me to me reading, highlighting, and taking notes.

PeepinGoodArgs,

LiquidText is cool af but I hated the UI. Maybe it’s become better in the last few months.

5Chex,

I actually have some complaints too but I overlook them! And the customer service was super responsive when I needed them.

This is unhelpful, but… I just don’t look at the news. If something actually important happens, I’ll hear about it indirectly and go look it up if I care, but I’ve found that not being tapped into the news (and especially political news) all day every day does wonders for my mental health.

emoknapsack, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?

I don’t think my customers were dumb but I was regularly accused of breaking the law in a previous job. This was back in 09-10, I worked for a mortgage company in the insurance escrow department processing homeowner insurance claims. The way my job worked: If a homeowner has significant property damage (fire, flood, fallen tree) and the home is under a mortgage, the insurance company will make the check payable to the homeowner and the mortgage company. If it has both names it cannot be cashed unless the mortgage company endorses the check. I was the person responsible for determining if we would sign the back of that check so the customer could cash it.

Mortgages have a clause that allows this, because it’s in the best interest of the mortgage company to make sure the property is returned to the way it was before the claim. If the claim was over a certain amount (I think it was $5k) we required a whole process of holding the money in an escrow account and doling it out in increments using property inspections to verify the work was being completed.

It was honestly a whole annoying process to have to go through, especially if you are already dealing with a traumatic situation that requires the claim in the first place. I got yelled at a lot.

Oftentimes it would start with the customer calling in to figure out why the check was made payable to the mortgage company also. The mortgage company I worked for was part of a large bank, so if the homeowner called the 800 number they were often frustrated by the time they finally found their way to me. Then as I explained that they couldn’t just have the money, we needed them to select a licensed contractor and get our approval, then we would provide 1/3, then we would do an inspection at 50% and release the next 1/3, then a final inspection at 100% and release the remainder. I would get yelled at and told it was illegal. But I would just point them to page 18 section 5 of the mortgage. I could access people’s mortgage docs and I was often asked to send the relevant pages.

Eventually people would accept their fate because they had no choice. I tried to be very sympathetic because it did suck for them. And I had customers tell me a lot of sad stories about fires and floods and tornadoes. It was a super interesting job though. I loved looking at the home inspection reports.

valdemar, in How often do you brush your teeth?

I only ever brush before going to bed, never in the mornings.

I probably started doing this around 6-8 years ago, and have had no problems at my annual check-ups.

boogetyboo,
@boogetyboo@aussie.zone avatar

Genuinely feel for people who have to spend time in enclosed spaces with you.

Congratulations for winning the genetic lottery with the robustness of your teeth, but brushing is also about hygiene. Body odour isn’t physically bad for you, but it is for everyone who has to be near you. Same with your breath.

Thorry84, (edited )

Dude your breath probably smells and people are too polite to tell you.

On your tongue there are a lot of anaerobic microbes (on everybody’s tongue, it isn’t a hygiene thing, they just live there). When you have your mouth closed for a long time, it creates a oxygen poor environment and these microbes thrive in that. They cause bad breath, so after people sleep or simply have their mouth closed for a while, the breath starts to stink. If you look in a mirror and your tongue has a kinda white or brownish tinge, this is because of the microbes. Everybody should brush their teeth and especially their tongue after sleeping. When looking in a mirror the tongue should be entirely pink and look healthy. Clean the tongue as far back as you can, to prevent bad breath.

If you smoke this isn’t true, your breath will stink no matter what.

So for your teeth it probably won’t matter much not brushing in the mornings, but for your breath it matters a lot.

I decided to come home during summer break during my senior year of college. I wasn't going to but I decided I should do something besides sitting around playing video games. I got in the car, drove for 4 hours, and got a call from my best friend that he was having some people over that night. I almost didn't go because I was tired from the drive. I decided to go. I knew everyone there, including a girl I had been friends with for years but hadn't seen in awhile. We were all hanging out, me and this girl ended up hooking up that night. We've been together over 12 years, married for 6. If I had decided to stay at my apartment and play Skyrim instead of driving home, we very likely wouldn't be together. I think about it more than I should lol.

carnha, in e-reader or tablet for reading academic paper

I got a Supernote A5X to read papers - I’m very happy with it and wouldn’t want a tablet. I specifically wanted a dumb device dedicated to notes/reading that I wouldn’t connect to the internet, which really helps me focus. The eink display is easy to read and is a great break from screens, it feels natural to write on.

However it’s not perfect - eink has a small lag in turning pages, so if you intend on flipping through a ton of pages while coding that may be a pain. The searching experience also isn’t great, typing takes longer because of the lag. I use it as an advanced notebook rather than a smart device, and I love it from that lens.

yarn, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

I don’t get my news from any social media platform, including lemmy, no offense to lemmy. I used to do that with reddit, but it’s just too unhinged getting your news that way.

I stick with Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times, in that order. I also use Google News specifically for local news, but I don’t even peek at the main world news feed there.

More generally speaking, I stick to the old school human editorial board for my news. News that’s presented to me on AP, for example, has already been filtered by a board of humans who are smarter than me and whose opinions I trust on the state of the world. Opening up your selection of news to an easily gameable social media algorithm is just more trouble than it’s worth, in my opinion.

Even the NYT has been pretty shady recently. Particularly in regards to their trans coverage. Here’s the story from GLAAD and on NPR.

Sorry, I have to admit that I’m not the best at keeping up with LGBTQ+ news, so I wasn’t aware of that controversy. I’ll keep an eye on that and see how it shakes out. If NYT continues to stir controversy, then I can switch. I’m not particularly attached to them. Washington Post would be a good replacement, and I saw that GLAAD article mention that WP’s LGBTQ+ coverage is better.

I think that the current downvote system is far from ideal, and ideally there should have some piece of “forced” feedback when you downvote someone, but keep in mind that a downvote is just “this should be less visible”. For example, people often downvote OK answers because an even better answer popped up, and they want the later to rise to the top. So a lot of times there’s no actual hostility in the downvotes.

And for other Reddit behaviours that people often call toxic (I call them SNOO - stupid, noisy, obnoxious, obtuse), I think that it’s cultural. The Reddit admins bred that behaviour into the users; and users are likely to carry it with them elsewhere, including Lemmy. I think that most of those individuals will get better over time here, and the ones who don’t will end leaving.

MiloSquirrel,

I feel like the issue with forced feedback when you downvote is you’ll get a lot of comments where its just 1-2 words, doesn’t say much, just a “No” or “Bad”. And if you require a min characters like the bneg forums you’ll just get “No. 10chars”

Requiring comments will cause people to half ass it at best, I think. Which, sure then people can downvote them, but are people going to write a well thought out comment for every “No”?

Is having 40 “I disagree” comments really better for discussion than just 40 downvotes?

lvxferre,
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

By “forced feedback” I was thinking more like having multiple types of downvote (“off-topic”, “rude”, “incorrect”, “I disagree”, “unfunny”…), so users need to pick one when downvoting something. It gives people a better clue on why a certain piece of content is being downvoted than just letting them assume, and it’s way less noise than 40 “I disagree” comments.

MiloSquirrel,

I could see that then, kinda like how you can react with different emoji on facebook.

Idk if I’d prefer it, but I think it could work

Joe_0237,

Thats pretty much what i was thinking. Also SNOO seems like a useful thing to have in the brain

Kettellkorn, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

I was golfing alone in 2017. I decided to post a picture on instagram of me golfing which I wouldn’t have posted if I had gone alone. I’m not really into social media so I’m not even sure why I did it. At the end of the round I look and see a like from a girl I hadn’t seen in years. I didn’t even know she followed me. I message her, then from there the snowball rolls into us getting married.

If I didn’t go golfing, if I wasn’t sent out on the course alone, I’d I didn’t post the picture, if she didn’t like it, none of it ever would have happened.

Fuuuuuuck you…

GevanGene, in How often do you brush your teeth?

A lot of y’all are clearly not as depressed as I am. It has been a struggle most of my adult life to force myself to brush my teeth. It’s something I’ve gotten much better at lately, and I’ve luckily not had any serious dental issues yet. But I’m shocked that no one else has said they struggle with it. Y’all are inspirations.

GreenEnigma,

I’m right there with you.

I’ve had good and bad periods of my life, with regard to how well I treat my teeth.

Currently trying to curb a bad period. Brushing daily is a struggle.

I put out reminders and set alarms on my phone.

But depression is a hell of a thing and it can honestly be surprising when I realize it’s been a week of ignoring my alarms and reminders.

My hygienist has been thoughtful about my mental health situation. But I always feel terrible before a trip to the dentist.

I was once a flossing consistently, bruising 2-3 times a day rope guy.

Trying to get back there. But everything is up hill and some things suffer.

LachlanUnchained,

I made this post, because I have gone through anxious and depressive states where I have completely overlooked it for weeks.

Sometimes it just falls from the priority list. Can be hard enough getting out of bed some days.

It may seem like a simple little thing. But often they are the hardest.

✌️💛

why_rob_y,

Doesn’t your mouth taste bad if you just don’t do it regularly? Honestly even general hygiene concerns aside, I’d do it twice a day just to get the fresh feeling. Maybe you could try some different toothpastes to find one that makes you really want to do it and not just feel like it’s something you should do?

CmdrShepard,

You ever been tested for ADHD? This could be a symptom of that.

WhoRoger,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

I also wrote something like that.

Somebody really needs to figure out a better way to do this.

NotADeer,

During my more depressive episodes my dental hygiene seriously suffered, and due to covid I didn’t go to my bi-annual checkup. Last summer I got a sudden and extremely painful toothache, and it turned out my teeth could make swiss cheese jealous. I ended up having to have one of my molars pulled (I had to expedite the process a bit after it literally started falling apart), two root canals (one of which I still haven’t had), and a fuckton of small holes to fill. The whole ordeal ended up being really painful and expensive. I’m still not as on top of it as I should wish, but I found that buying an electric toothbrush made it a lot easier, and I also force myself to brush at least every morning. The pain and debt are also good motivators…

some_guy,

Years of depression put me in a spot where I had multiple huge face-swelling problems. Brushing is an afterthought when you hate life and want to die. I hope you’re doing well.

Elw,

Wow I never connected this with anxiety/depression but that makes a lot of sense now that I hear it.

I didn’t go to the dentist and didn’t brush my teeth but for maybe the occasional time or for a spurt of a week or two here and there for about the last 15 years, starting in college. I always thought I was special because my teeth didn’t seem to know the difference and my mouth “felt” better. It wasn’t until about a year ago when I had a moler snap in half while eating dinner that I realized I might have an issue. I went to the dentist to have that replaced and was told I needed to make a change or this would keep happening.

I’ve now managed to get myself back on the habit of brushing at least once a day, usually before bed. My mouth hated it at first but after the first month or so it was so much better. I can’t believe I let myself go like I did…
