bitcrafter, in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?

For day-to-day purposes, if you are used to Fahrenheit but not Celsius or vice versa, and all you want to do is get a rough sense of how warm or cold it is outside without having to do arithmetic involving fractions in your head, then remember that there are two temperatures in Celsius that are roughly the same in Fahrenheit but with their digits transposed: 16° C ~ 61° F, and 28° C ~ 82° F. You can then roughly interpolate/extrapolate by about 2° F for every 1° C.

Anticorp,

Also freezing is 0 in Celsius, so 32f is 0c. That one always helps me. Not as useful for converting c to f.

Climinteedus,

Alternatively, 100C is boiling, which is 212F.

venusenvy47,

Bob and Doug Mackenzie thought me to roughly convert C to F by taking the temperature in Celsius, doubling it and then adding 30. It gets you in the ballpark.

I am all-in on Bitwarden - and I use Apple's 2FA with a widget shortcut to Passwords in settings to unlock Bitwarden. For maximum security it makes sense to keep your OTP in a separate app, but if you choose to keep them in Bitwarden, it will add your 2FA codes to your clipboard after inserting your login and password on the site. Extremely convenient.

Bitwarden is light, multi-platform, will support Passkeys, open source, offers username and password generation, free (and VERY cheap if you want to unlock sharing). In my opinion nothing comes close.

FirstSeaLord, in What do you use Vaseline for?
@FirstSeaLord@kbin.social avatar

exzema and "slugging", ie cover feet in foot cream (or any other body part/cream type), cover that in vaseline and wear socks for a couple hours or overnight.

EtnaAtsume,

Why on earth would you do that?

Alto,
@Alto@kbin.social avatar

Eczema

EtnaAtsume,

Ohh, that makes sense. Just seems like it’d feel mad gross to put socks on over Vaselined feet?

ryathal,

Covering in Vaseline is a way to effectively seal the lotion in.

reev, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

I’d guesstimate upwards of 5000 hours in Minecraft.

darkstar,

Same, since 2013 :s

darkstar, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

War Thunder, approaching 10,000 hours. One day I’ll get good!

If you are wounded it’s great to apply on your skin

rm_dash_r_star, in What do you use Vaseline for?
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

I use it to lubricate machine parts at times. Also good coating for rust protection like the sockets of outdoor bulbs or tools in storage. There’s better products for skin protection. Years ago it was commonly used for infant diaper rash, but again there’s better products for that now. I don’t think I’ve ever used it on my body, it’s made from petroleum so it’s really just highly refined axle grease.

rackmountrambo,

Yeah it's actually a decent dialectic grease.

Edit: In fact after a quick research, I can't really find the difference between a 14$ tiny tube of dialectic and a cheapo massive vat of Vaseline. Guess I should get some for the shop.

rm_dash_r_star,
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

It works great for that. It’s also good in automotive for bulb sockets, I’ve used it for that as well. It’s amazing actually, slop some in a socket and next time you pull a bulb it will still look brand new, even if not well protected as the case with antique cars. You would think it might interfere with electrical contact an Vaseline is completely non-conductive, it doesn’t seem to at all. You can also use it on car battery terminals and it will completely stop any corrosion, however I actually use 90W gear oil on those since it attracts less dirt and works as well.

Eufalconimorph,

It’s dielectric (non-conductive) not dialectic (talking).

meliache, in What online games can be played by 2 users?
@meliache@feddit.de avatar

Definitely the opposite of “light”, but you mentioned chess and if you’re into something similar but very different, you might try learning together on online-go.com. That site has a very short introduction into the game under the Learn tab, but it only covers the very basics and initially you will have no idea what you’re doing. The rules are simple, but there is a lot of complexity that arises from that and professionals study the game for years. But even as a complete beginner it’s fun. Full on 19x19 games can take a long time, but games on a 9x9 board are fairly quick, comparable to a chess game.

Still, this would be a journey. If you want something not turn-based and relaxing to play while chatting maybe try something else but I can’t give any recommendations.

sapo,
@sapo@beehaw.org avatar

I second the recommendation of Go. I’m very much a beginner, but the subtlety and variety of every game kind of ruined chess for me.

Some more recommendations of learning or beginner resources:

Go Magic has a lot of really in depth video and interactive tutorials. There’s a paid plan, but the beginner and early intermediate courses are free and way more thorough than anything else online right now.

The Conquest of Go is a great little game on steam that has its own tutorials and a campaign mode with scaling difficulty. It’s my favorite way to play against bots, but you can also connect your OGS account and play online through there.

elouboub, in should we be worried about powers-moderators/users?
@elouboub@kbin.social avatar

Nah, once it become possible to group communities from multiple instances into one (aka multi-reddit on reddit - needs another name on the fediverse), power mods will have no power. Someone could just create an instance with the same community name and it could end up in the community group.

HobbitFoot,

That’s only if they are chosen to be added. If I create a world politics sub and fill it with anime titties, I shouldn’t expect to be auto added to all world politics community groups.

7eter, in Finding an instance that blocks least and is least blocked

U might want to take a look at the federation map. It might be a bit overwhelming but in the settings on the bottom left you may chose blocked and allowed in order to get some insights on who federates with whom.

wow what did lemmygrad.ml do?

Be communist.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@lemmy.ml avatar

Be mindlessly propagandistic “communist.” The countries they fawn over aren’t even particularly communist, they’re just authoritarian. Russia in particular is run by capitalist oligarchs.

It’s just tiresome and pointless engaging with them.

simply_surprise,
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

Hi facedeer, you understand that one of the Lemmy.ml instance rules is not being insulting, right?

I don’t appreciate being called mindlessly propagandized out of the blue, especially by someone who’s certainly heavily propagandized.

The countries they fawn over aren’t even particularly communist, they’re just authoritarian.

Can you help me understand your level of knowledge about Marxism-leninism that you feel comfortable correcting me?

It’s just tiresome and pointless engaging with them.

You engaging me makes this a lie. You started barking first.

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m not speaking about you specifically, I have no idea who you are. I’m talking about lemmygrad in general. Just like the person you were responding to was talking about. He asked “what did lemmygrad.ml do?” And I’m clarifying that.

It’s not that lemmygrad.ml is simply “communist.”

simply_surprise,
@simply_surprise@lemmygrad.ml avatar

I’m not speaking about you specifically, I have no idea who you are. I’m talking about lemmygrad in general.

Generally, when you describe a group it’s understood that you’re describing members of that group. As a Lemmygrad user, you’ve called me “mindless” and “propagandized” (with no provocation or context). This is rude. You’ve also chosen to engage with me while taking part in a strange farce about how you wouldn’t choose to engage with me.

It’s not that lemmygrad.ml is simply “communist.”.

I thought I was pretty clear when I first asked: what is your experience with Marxism-leninism that you feel comfortable making this statement?

FaceDeer,
@FaceDeer@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m not basing my statement off of any experience with Marxism-leninism. I’m basing it off of my experience with lemmygrad posters here on Lemmy. For example, this thread about the Tienanmen Square anniversary. I don’t particularly care about the specific political ideologies on display.

comfy,
@comfy@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s fine to be offended that they called you propagandised, but that doesn’t make it less offensive to immediately say the same thing back to them. You are both insulting each other, it’s not helping the Lemmygrad situation.

HobbitFoot, in should we be worried about powers-moderators/users?

Moderating is hard and requires a set of skills to run moderation cheaply. You’re probably going to have a group of known mods on Lemmy doing the same, just because mods with these skills will be sought after.

A bigger issue is that Lemmy seems to be continuing Reddit’s practice of mod rank by time only. The implementation of a guild model would be better for mod governance, as it allows for better discussions of mod policy and allow greater input from the invested community.

Of course, trigger happy bans are still going to happen as people troll and worse.

bh11235, in Should an altruistic organ donor be allowed to restrict their donation to a specific group of people? (e.g. women, gingers)

From my point of view you’ve just given an excellent argument against the philosophy that I will call, for lack of a better term, “beep-boop utilitarianism”. Allowing such a donation has an immediate, tangible and quantifiable benefit; but the norm you are eroding by doing so is much more valuable, and may be impossible to renegotiate if lost.

Tar_alcaran,

I’ve heard of “Short-term utilitarianism”, but I like yours better.

IonAddis, in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t have any good suggestions, but I have two questions that might be relevant to you or to other people who do have ideas.

  • Will you be visiting a grocery store in Iceland to get your ingredients? Or will you be packing them in your luggage on the flight over?
  • If they are in your luggage, will there be any customs tomfoolery if you’re bringing lots of food with you? (I have never flown with lots of food in my luggage; I have no idea if this is even a concern, but wanted to bring the question up in case it is.)
nigelinux,

I will bring some food like nuts and some will be brought in grocery storea/supermarkets there.

What do you mean by customs tomfoolery?

sturlabragason,

I don’t think he is talking about importing it. 😅

You’re not allowed to for a bunch of stuff anyway.

IonAddis,
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t seem likely–but you never know, which is why I thought raising the question might be useful. As you said, you’re not allowed to import lots of stuff…which, if you poured all your food money into food you’re bringing with you, would be devastating to find out at the last moment. Esp. if you were on a tight budget to begin with.

stealth_cookies,

Generally flying with lots of food into a foreign country is a big no no. Packaged snacks are fine but anything that could be considered an agricultural product should be avoided.
