HobbitFoot, in How can I back up a community I mod?

Right now, no.

The best you could do is try to archive the updates on an instance you control, but that is going to require you running an instance, writing custom code, and possibly breaking any GDPR protections you might have by not cross-honoring deletions.

There is a reason why a lot of Reddit subs who want to make their own Lemmy community create their own instances.

willya, in How can I back up a community I mod?
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Not in any real usable way other than an archive of what you can see in a browser. As of right now you’d need your own instance for a real backup.

smstnitc, in What do you use Vaseline for?

I haven’t used it since I was a teenager 😂

jonkenator, in What series did you rewatch most often?

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

The Office

Ted Lasso

Seinfeld

Walop, in What are your favorite "ugly" games?

I have had some people refuse to even try Baba Is You, because it looks ugly.

I had The Hex a few years even installed, so I have tried it, but only after getting familiar with the style of Daniel Mullins’ games with Inscryption I pushed far enough to get interested. Still very clunky, but worth it.

clearleaf,

I love both the style and soundtrack of that game. Maybe it’s a little too “lowfi” for some people. That’s the only way I can imagine someone not liking it.

Contramuffin,

Who is saying that Baba is You is ugly? I don’t think I’ve ever heard that opinion. It’s always just been “charming Flash game aesthetic” for me

Rai,

I felt like a the Hex was one of the most innovative games, I loved it soooo much.

TheHalc,

Baba is… Fuck you, you’re stupid, this game is stupid. Fuck you.

I’m stupid 😔

Oh come on, the art style is charming!

EatALime, in What's the benefit of using Kbin over Lemmy?
@EatALime@kbin.social avatar

Kbin does a better job of putting new posts in front of you even before you have subscribed to anything, so I think it is easier to find interesting things to read. Kbin is newer than Lemmy, so Lemmy had the advantage in familiarity for people. More people had heard of it when Reddit's API drama blew up and that gave Lemmy a distinct advantage when people picked a new platform. Kbin also has some annoyances like not being able to collapse comments and vote buttons being at the top instead of the bottom of posts and comments. If someone has written a lengthy comment, I want to read through the whole thing before I decide how to vote and I don't want to scroll back up to get to a vote button. To reply to a post you also have to scroll through the comment section. In some cases it's good to see if someone else has already said what you are going to say, but in other cases if someone is looking for personal stories, you don't necessarily need to read everyone else's story before submitting your own.

Personally I have this kbin account and a lemmy account as well. My Lemmy server seems to go down more often and the default sort always shows the same days old pinned posts from my server admin that I can't seem to hide after reading. On Reddit, I didn't have to switch sort to see newer stuff so Lemmy comes across as pretty stale sometimes even though there is a fair amount of posting going on.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

On lemmy the default is Active, which basically boosts any post that still has some recent chatter going on but is otherwise “stale”. In the settings though you can change the default sort. I’ve gone with Hot, which is I think the default sort on kbin too.

Can you change the default sort on kbin? I could work how to.

unknowing8343,

But Hot is broken in Lemmy, it shows old stuff like it’s hot. The system is broken, but I think there is a PR on the way.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Hmmm … it seems fine to me. I’d heard it was broken before though.

In what way is it broken?

kamiheku,

Like the parent said, it surfaces old (as in years old) posts as “hot”. Not sure if that’s the case still, but I have definitely noticed it before.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Ah … right … yea I’ve seen that happen occasionally … I had actually presumed that something had been changed with that post, perhaps by an admin or something cleaning stuff up, and that triggered a new timestamp for the post.

Maybe still a bug. I’ll keep track now of when it happens as it might help sort it out.

But still, that’s rarely the case for me. Just went down a fair way in my feed now and there wasn’t a single occurrence of it. Could it be particular communities causing it, maybe from instances on older software?

Otherwise though, Hot seems to do what I’d want. Combine with a bit of New or Top for an appropriate time window and I’m all good.

For comments, Hot/New/Top all do what I’d want too.

SeeJayEmm, (edited )
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

It’s still a bug. My server is at 0.18.2 and I regularly see old posts if I sort by Hot.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Links to Communities or Instances?

FWIW, just checked mine and no problems (and I’m subscribed to plenty of communities).

SeeJayEmm,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

This is the bottom half of the first page of my subscribed feed and I restarted my lemmy instance yesterday to make a config change.

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Yep, that looks bad (obviously). I just went to the science community, sorted by Hot, and yea similar things appear towards the bottom of the feed.

Seems like the sort of thing that would be a minor and fixable bug. I don’t have time to chase down github issues right now, but I’ll try checking older communities to spot these occurrences. Naively I’d guess something like dates or vote-scored being truncated badly or something.

Thanks!!

maegul,
@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

OK, I couldn’t help myself, and checked GItHub. Seems the issue may have been fixed hours ago. Don’t know when the new version will ship though.

Seems the issue may been to do with the process that updates the ranks of posts not being able to catch up to older posts, and so they show up with out of date ranks/scores. That process has been optimised, apparently, and should have no problem keeping up with all of the posts.

github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3617

TheHalc, (edited )

I’ve heard that the “hot surfacing old posts” bug is more prevalent on instances that haven’t restarted for a while. It still shouldn’t happen, but I don’t think it’s universal.

in2thesame,

Hey! Thanks for explaining. How can I use/Download Kbin?

hardypart,
@hardypart@feddit.de avatar

Just go to kbin.social, this is the largest instance. There are other, smaller instances, too. Just like Lemmy.

jayknight, in Probably should assume everything will be leaked, anyone using Tor/VPN for Fediverse apps?

Are there any onion service lemmy instances yet?

Yeah2206,

Also, isn’t onion service pretty much used to hide the server’s IP, but doesn’t do much about hiding anything for the end users?

LedgeDrop,

The end user’s ip is hidden in the onion network. The server will get the ip address of the “last node” your client routed it’s request through (and that node only has the ip address of the previous node, etc).

However, the clients ip can be leaked if a server creates some Javascript which makes an Ajax call (basically, an additional http request). A malicious Ajax call will not go through the onion network and thus expose the clients real ip. Hence, it’s recommended to disable Javascript and other features while using tor.

jayknight,

If you have all your traffic going through tor, ajax requests will come from an exit node too.

LedgeDrop,

I did a bit more homework and you’re right.

“Back in the day” running Javascript increased your attack area. But now-a-days I guess it’s consider “safe”.

I did find this old (7 years ago) posting which talked about concerns. Today, I guess the rule of thumb is to avoid (or limit) browser plugins.

Thank you clarify that.

alex, in How can I back up a community I mod?

My suggestion would be to back it up on the Internet archive manually once in a while.

treadful, in What goes good with American Cheese?
@treadful@lemmy.zip avatar

Omelettes and egg sandwiches. Roast beef sandwiches. Oddly, one slice in a bowl of packaged ramen.

Just get the good quality stuff, not Kraft singles.

Duchess,
@Duchess@yiffit.net avatar

my favourite lunch right now is scrambled egg on toast with an american cheese slice between the bread and the egg

I’ll upvote it with the hopes of seeing an answer from the devs. This could be a very important/useful feature.

Joshie, in Other than blue bubbles, why do you use iPhone?

OS updates. It’s frustrating to buy a top of the line android phone just for it to be forgotten by the manufacturer in 6-8 months.

tooting_lemmy,

Pixels give you 5 years now same as iphone.

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

iPhone gets you more like 10 years of security updates

makeuseof.com/apple-security-updates-for-10-year-…

AlexWIWA,

My iPad from 2015 is still getting all the updates. It’s wild.

tooting_lemmy,

Yeah I think iPad’s are clearly better than any android tablet.

milkjug,
@milkjug@lemmy.world avatar

This right here. Lifelong Android user that switched to the iPhone 14 and never looked back.

Edit: iPhone 13, not 14, my bad.

floofloof,

My problem with Apple is that everything’s designed to interoperate with other Apple stuff, and nothing else. It feels like a walled garden that doesn’t just keep users in, but also keeps those of us out who might want to try a single Apple device without spending many thousands replacing our entire ecosystem.

JackbyDev,

Literally causing people to get bullied into getting an iphone over stupid chat bubble colors.

Micromot,

Which gets even stupider when you realize apple is being stubborn and that is causing the issue

GeneralBoop,

Absolutely, Apple is being resistant to RCS not because they think iMessage is superior but because they know it weakens their lock in power. I know I’m stating the obvious, but it just annoys me so much.

euj2EUVtuwrch4edp, in What are your favorite "ugly" games?
@euj2EUVtuwrch4edp@kbin.social avatar

Dcss is the greatest game of all time. Everything about it is good.

But Dwarf Fortress is also good with bad graphics.

Factorio is like crack and looks terrible.

chunkystyles,

I think the Steam release of DF looks nice. They’re simple graphics, but not ugly.

euj2EUVtuwrch4edp,
@euj2EUVtuwrch4edp@kbin.social avatar

I'll have to give it a go. I bought it to support them. I put in many many hours of DF like 10 years ago. I was sending the guys money too... I wish I could find the drawings they sent me.

I've just been playing a lot of DCSS lately because it is so easy to just spin up my browser and be killing kobolds and fire giants.

firethunder7,
nickajeglin,

Agreed. I have more hours in DCSS than any other game. I started playing when it was Linley’s Dungeon Crawl.

I don’t think it’s totally fair to call it ugly either. It’s a masterpiece of efficiency. The ASCII looks messy to some people, but after a while you just see right through it; purple Y = catlobe gtfo etc. Plus the upside is that it’s extremely clear at a glance what is going on because you don’t have complicated sprites everywhere. And the handmade vaults that get rolled into the procgen are often really nice looking and give the world a lot of character.

euj2EUVtuwrch4edp,
@euj2EUVtuwrch4edp@kbin.social avatar

I’ve also been playing since Linley’s! Got my first win way back when Sif channeling was a discrete action and it cost food. I was a mummy so fuck food and I cast summon dragon (also discrete) to fill up the whole screen. Good times.

Thurgo, in What do you use Vaseline for?

I use it after cleaning the impeller on my aquarium filters. They naturally collect goop around the magnet bit of the impeller which makes them quiet, but eventually there will be too much goop and they stop spinning or make a horrible racket. If you clean it off all the way it will buzz and rattle for a while. A big blob of vaseline will quiet it down until the goop builds back up.

phar,

Any chance the goop builds up faster because it is sticking to the Vaseline?

Thurgo,

I haven’t noticed that yet. A lot of the goop is from decayed duckweed and poo debris getting jammed near the impeller. Might take 3-6 months for the impeller to get stopped by the goop. Vaseline isn’t a very good long term lubricant for aquarium impellers because you’ll open it up a week or two after being applied and sometimes it will be gone (probably sucked out and globbed somewhere else inside the filter). Really good temporary solution though.

homoludens, in What online games can be played by 2 users?

Boatdgamearena has a lot of boardgames to choose from (surprise!), some of them are definitely playable on a phone.

Jaeger86, in How do you cheer yourself up after a rough day? Or a rough year?

Delta 8 and painting miniatures

Dinodicchellathicc,

I used to love making clay soldiers as a child. Maybe I’ll start again.

Jaeger86,

That’s cool, like I’m for sure not very good at this but it’s been a fun thing to learn, watching videos and buying like “good” paints and brushes. It’s been a neat hobby to mix up just playing video games and tv

FiftyShadesOfMyCow,

Hexahydrocannabinol Is also very effective and, in Germany at least, legal!

Jaeger86,

I’m in the godforsaken place that is Texas, so I’m using what I can get 🤣

FiftyShadesOfMyCow,

No weed = No Texas for me

Can’t wait for weed to become the new normal
