dekatron, in Which is the most satisfying IO connector system, in your opinion?

I like USB-C especially when it clicks.

TerranExpat, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I haven’t posted in years, but there is still so much content there. Now though without my favourite app (Joey) I probably will go there less. Even less when they disable old.reddit.com.

Xylinna, in What movie did you rewatch most often?
@Xylinna@lemmy.world avatar

Ghostbusters, original three Indiana Jones, and Tremors.

Streetdog,
@Streetdog@lemmy.world avatar

Tremors is so much fun to watch!

wispydust, in Any good macro/keybind software for linux with wayland?

KMonad!

It’s more like an analogue for QMK (custom keyboard firmware) than reWASD though with features oriented towards rearranging, layers, etc. But it can do more than that, too.

Also it works on Xorg, Windows and macOS too.

I know it’s cliche but Friends.

Idefinitelydonotknow, in What series did you rewatch most often?

Black-ish

For someone who is not Black, it brings a glimpse into Black culture that I simply did not have. Plus, Anthony Anderson is perfect casting for the role.

Shawshank Redemption

starlinguk, in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?
@starlinguk@kbin.social avatar

A caponata sandwich with a shed load of cheese should keep you going for a while. Or if you don't want to make caponata, grill some veg instead.

nigelinux,

Caponata is new to me, and cheese would be great!

habanhero, in Are any of the DNA testing companies trustworthy?

None. As long as it’s “commercially available”, their interest is no longer aligned with yours.

Also, unless you are running your own Lemmy instance, I question your assumptions that using Lemmy is actually an upgrade to privacy and data ownership. I heard this point a lot and I don’t see the basis for this. Can you explain?

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

A small lemmy instance = a small dataset = less desirable to advertisers = less valuable for the owner of the instance to attempt to sell

habanhero,

Which is kind of my point. Even on Lemmy the “data ownership” isn’t really up to the individual users, it’s the instance owners. The only way to 100% control where your data goes (as an user) and who looks at it, is if you run your own instance. Otherwise you are still at the mercy of another master, hopefully a more benevolent one.

And if the instance that most new users default to is lemmy.world and that instance is 100K users strong, I think the “smaller instance” argument doesn’t really apply there for most users.

Even if you run your own instance, if you’re federated with other instances then your posts, comments and upvotes could still be scraped by someone else

Hey, you’re correct it’s pretty expensive to buy food here.

If you want to try and get a feel for some of the prices you can try your luck here with Google translate -> kronan.is/snjallverslun (this store is much nicer and just as cheap as the self proclaimed discount supermarket Bónus)

Expensive stuff includes but is not limited to; fresh meat and fish, most non basic fruit, fresh pastries, non factory bread, meat toppings, cheese, good yoghurt, most cereal, and more. Basically anything good and healthy. It’s gotten much worse in the past two years compared to the other Nordics because the icelandic aristocracy has taken a real liking to greedflation. All the fast food and restaurants are crazy expensive. Anywhere a tourist might go is also crazy expensive.

The less expensive foods might include: basic fruit like banana and some type of apples, factory made bread, cheaper types of biscuits, cheaper types of pasta and canned goods, cheaper types of yogurt. Some dried fruit and nuts. You should be ok with making sandwiches as someone else suggested.

Good luck, try not to get stuck here for too long 😅

nigelinux,

Thanks for the detailed reply! Great list of examples help us a lot.

Not sure about Iceland, but several countries place some constraints on which foodstuffs you can enter the country with (not asking about importing, etc, even for personal consumption). I’d check this beforehand.

nigelinux,

Thanks for the reminder, I believe anything but meat or diary product is fine, but will check again.

PotjiePig, in What's your favorite restaurant chain?

Morley’s for the banger hot wings.

Tigerking, (edited ) in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?

Pasta salad is one of my go-to lunches on the go. Fusili pasta mixed with any and all vegetables you prefer. For protein I’ll add boiled eggs, beans and/or fried chicken strips. Easy to make, nutritious and good to eat cold/room temperature.

Iceland is amazing, hope you have a greta trip!

nigelinux,

Pasta salad is not common in Asia, but do seems like a good choice. Thanks!

soyagi, in During travel, what can I prepare beforehand as meal, which can be eaten without access to fire or microwave?

Go to the supermarket and get ready-made meals. It’s way cheaper than restaurants and you’ll get to try local delicacies :)

nigelinux,

We do want some taste of local cuisine, so ready-made meals in supermarket would be awesome.
