I believe that eventually in the future it might become a “war” between the police having some form of device on them that prevents a phone from even being able to be turned on within a large radius, let alone being able to record audio/video, and those trying to record such acts. If anything, it might also turn into a thing of people turning to creative and innovative ways to get around that technology in that potential future and the police responding with updates that make whatever we use to counter absolutely meaningless.
It might turn into a thing - if it happens/becomes reality - that the vast majority people get used to it, similar to how in Japan, phones made specially for their market are required to have a sound go off when the camera is used. That’s a future we don’t want or need.
My one hope is that police departments (being bureaucratic organizations) might be so slow to update to the latest camera-disabling hardware / software they they may turn out consistently one step behind.
They will absolutely use this as a way to grub for money. It’s early, so I can’t think of how exactly they would spin this as a public safety need, but I’m sure there is a way they will twist it.
I can imagine those “support our police officers!” charities mailing out some nonsense like,
Officers are being surveiled and monitored by foreign secret agents, MS-13, and Soros-backed Antifa groups!
This puts our officers in danger and disrupts their attempts to serve our community. To root out crime and ensure officers’ safety, we need people like you to donate so selfless officers can afford countermeasures that protect them from this dangerous surveillance.
If this kind of thing becomes widespread, then people will find a way to broadcast fake anti-camera signals as well. Imagine a thief breaks into your house and you want your security cameras to record them… but guess what, the thief broadcasts an anti-camera signal and they all switch off, completely neutralising your security system. “Unintended side-effects”
They need to know that the system can only be changed from within. Being apathetic or edgy does not change anything. Voting does.
If there’s is no one to vote for? Well, the parties too can only be changed from within. Join a party and vote in that party for it to change it’s direction.
This is naive and optimistic. No political change has actually come from voting. The civil rights act was not voted, but fought and died for. Same with worker’s rights.
There was plenty of anti-slavery political involvement leading up to the civil war, the New Deal was started by the democratically elected FDR, we’ve recently seen the disparities in LGBT rights depending on who holds majorities in government. All these come from voting and deliberate policymaking whether it be through ingenuity or bigotry. Fight tooth and nail for your right to vote, but ALWAYS use it, and make sure to educate yourself about who is on your ballot.
I say this as someone who considers themselves a leftist…
The lack of civility shown by left leaning people online is almost certainly pushing moderates into more extreme communities and the unhinged takes are perfect meme fodder for those with a bad agenda. Instead of channeling your anger at the person you’re corresponding with through your keyboard, channel it at a lack of empathy and understanding in society as a whole and respond with kindness and disengage when the conversation is not honest.
Repeat above for the use of “nazi”. The use of the word has become devalued because people like to fling it at folks with milquetoast centrist opinions, save it for people who are legitimately evil.

Yup, I said the same thing to people around me, when the use of the word “fascist” became a thing in my country. Even clearly moderate opponents were being called fascists left and right. I told people around me that the word would lose its meaning and power. That’s exactly what happened, and when an actual fascist came up, you had nothing against him and its supporters transformed the term into a joke.
Idk, that seems like a difficult technical and political challenge, so I don’t think that’s very likely.
However, what I think is much more likely to happen is cameras detecting copyrighted content and not recording it. Or automatic instant takedowns of copyrighted content when the video is shared. Then, all the government would need to do is play copyrighted music when they don’t want you to record.
Oh wait, this is already happening [1] albeit not commonly or to an extreme extent. But really, this is why we need to be very careful about technological enforcement of laws. It can lead to unintended (or intended) negative consequences to civil liberties. And its also why its critical for your devices to always be acting on your behalf, and not for the government or corporations.

Is mastodon worth signing up for, as a content creator?
I used to be a pretty avid tweeter - I’d post random things related to my job (software engineer), like gotchas I encountered, new articles I’d written etc etc, but I left Twitter when a certain somebody took over.
I’m not bothered about a large following, but I did enjoy randomly helping people that would see my tweets and fix their issue / help with the thing they were working on.
I did end up creating an account, but I’m not sure about posting my handle here as I want to keep the things separate (especially as I’m using my name on mastodon).
Finding stuff on Mastodon is more about hashtags. Eventually, by subscribing to #stuff you’re interested in, you will discover accounts worth following. The Tusky app allows you to subscribe to hashtags like to an account. I don’t follow people anymore, I follow topics!
Eh. Lemmy has the biggest user base because it isn’t a single site. That makes it hard for anything else to match. Since it’s not being a single site also puts a barrier to entry, you get less idiots and low effort crap. Well, outside of the c/s where low effort crap is the point lol.
It feels the most like reddit with a lower degree of the bad parts. The differences tend to be beneficial or neutral rather than a detriment. The only real significant flaw is the early stage of development. There’s a lack of feature and tool parity that’s pretty big. Luckily, the boom in users hasn’t gone very far past where other tools will be needed, and there’s enough apps that are killing it in terms of features that make up for the lemmy development lag that it isn’t something that matters enough to make going to a more centralized site worth it.
I’m repeating a lot from other comments I’ve made, but once discovery improves, and we get a solid organization ability for our subscriptions, you won’t notice any minor differences at all. Moderation tools are weak, but they aren’t necessary yet either. There’s fewer assholes being assholey, and that’s a huge factor that requires moderation more than anything but spam and bad bots. Mostly, the bots have been squashed on the admin side, so (again) there’s no rush for mod tools like automod.
We need a flair system here pretty bad because it would make a lot of the issues with both discovery and filtration go away. Even a # system would be useful, if it wasn’t the markdown for headers.
After that, a lemmy wide search, and you’ve got everything essential from reddit that isn’t already here.
