Several (attempted) murderers have owned copies of The Catcher in the Rye.

“Vending machines are more deadly than sharks”.

While it’s true that (at least for some years) more people are killed by vending machine accidents than shark attacks, your personal risk depends on what you do. If you’re a vending machine factory worker who never goes into the ocean, you’re far more likely to be killed by a vending machine than a shark. But if you live in a part of the world that doesn’t have vending machines and you swim in the ocean every day, the reverse is true.

MrPear,

Wait, so you’re telling me that there are no vending machines in the ocean that are preying on people swimming in the water?

novibe, in Atheists/agnostics of Lemmy, do you believe in the existence of souls?

“Soul” is just consciousness. Which many people seem to equate to the brain here.

There is 0 scientific evidence that consciousness has anything to do with our brains. Much to the contrary actually.

Consciousness truly is one of the biggest mysteries of life. We all experience it, but the more you observe it, the less you can find it.

It may feel at first as it’s a phenomena of the brain, of the mind. But soon after you start paying really close attention to it, you realize that consciousness is behind the mind. It’s underneath it.

It observes the mind. It observes everything. And that’s what it is. Perceiving. Aware of everything.

Its the only indivisible and irreducible thing in the universe that we ever found. Consciousness just is. It is the awareness in you. It is the awareness in everything.

When we crack consciousness, all these talks of “souls”, “god”, “atheism”, will seem just silly tbh.

Source? Everything I’ve read on the topic suggests that it’s to do with the brain - damaged brain = no consciousness, even if the rest of the body fine.

Its the only indivisible and irreducible thing in the universe that we ever found. Consciousness just is.

Elementary particles would like a word.

Kissaki,

This makes no sense to me. It's just generic platitudes and a wild claim.

You say "quite the contrary", claiming there is scientific evidence of consciousness having nothing to do with our brains. Where can I find this evidence?

I couldn't follow any of your reasoning. Can you summarize your central thesis? Because we observe...?

I don't see how conscience could not have anything to do with our brain when that is where it arises.

cccc, in Which music streaming app should I use?

Spotify web player with a good ad block at least gets around the “supporting them” bit.

Wahots, in Can someone still viewing Reddit explain how it is doing as of right now in terms of content quality and engagement?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Pre ban, it’s quality was down for sure. More smaller threads, weird questions that usually get left on the cutting room floor, all that. Reddit survived this, but much like someone surviving a life-threatening disease, they might not be truely 100% ever again. I believe this is just the first of many bad step reddit may take as they IPO and try to get more money out of people, I’d imagine. A slow decline, like twitter.

Skooshjones, in Lemmy, what is the scariest/creepiest/eeriest experience you have had while travelling?
@Skooshjones@vlemmy.net avatar

My spouse and I had a very long layover between red eye flights and decided to get a ride to a nearby motel to catch a few hours of sleep before going back to the airport early in the morning to catch our next flight. This was in a southern state in the US.

It turned out to be a super sketchy motel and it was really late at night when we got there. We could tell it was in a rough part of the city, driving past houses on the street all had bars over the windows and doors, lots of trash blowing across the street, stuff like that.

We go inside to sign in and get our room and the clerk mumbles something we can’t understand and asks us to wait for a few minutes. Then while we’re sitting in the lobby, a huge pickup truck pulls up outside with a white guy driving it. Two Hispanic guys get out of the cab, an older man and a boy. They walk in and start talking quietly with the clerk. They both seemed really nervous and kept glancing nervously at the pickup running outside. After a few minutes the clerk led them both away somewhere and then the truck drove away and the clerk called us up and signed us in.

I think it might have been some kind of human trafficking/smuggling thing, but idk. It just was so weird, everybody involved was acting really nervous and on edge. I hope both of them are alright, we obviously never saw them again or even saw where they got led off to.

Saigonauticon, in Atheists/agnostics of Lemmy, do you believe in the existence of souls?

It seems like a way to take all the things I don’t understand particularly well, and put them in a category that I fail to define precisely.

My preference is not to do that, because I have a hard time believing in something that I can’t characterize reasonably well.

Saigonauticon, in Why is my food making lightning?

You have angered Thor by putting metal objects in the sacred container.

cwagner, in What Will Be the Singularity Endgame: Utopia, Dystopia, Collapse, or Extinction? Why?

Utopia, I believe in the robots. It’s a bit of a shame none of us humans will be around, but that’s life.

claymedia, in Shower Sitters, Are You Out There?

Since I was a kid. You’re the first person I’ve ever heard talk about it. I guess I always thought it was super weird so i never told anyone.

socsa,

I used to straight up nap in the shower as a kid. My parents thought I was jerking off but I was legitimately just taking a power nap.

claymedia,

Dude. Same. I would sometimes make a little sleep mask out of a wash cloth.

I just let my parents think that. Somehow, yanking it seemed less weird.

socsa,

Holy shit are we the same person?

spicydogleg, in What can Lemmy federate with?

In theory yes Lemmy should federate with them all of course to be sure if it works on a per instance level you could always try it, As not all mastodon instances seem to work with Lemmy for some reason

trymeout,

Does the mastodon instance need to be up to date for it to work?
