I miss women centric subs, especially thes ones with a mix of posts that foster discussion, memes, and support such as witchesvspatriarchy
Best of redditor updates because I want my stories lol
Specific subs for shows because I like reading episode discussions, often someone catches something I missed that gives more context or they catch clues and foreshadowing. Theories too. Or just seeing if anyone else had same thoughts I did! I think it will be a long time before lemmy is big enough to be close to that, and will probably only be newer shows.
Also just the sheer volume of content produced every day. I’ll hold strong though and not give reddit any traffic. Reddit was fantastic as a lurker, posting most anywhere large felt like whispering into a void. Lemmy is great for actually participating, I think it will be a long time yet until it’s as fun for lurking.
I’ll do you one step better. What about when our ai meets another ai?
Our existence is based on death and war. There is a lot of evidence to suggest we killed off all the other human-like species, such as neanderthals.
And that is the reason we progressed to a state where we have developed our world and society we know today, and all the other species are just fossils.
We were the most aggressive and bloodthirsty species of all the other aggressive and bloodthirsty alternatives, and even though we have domesticated our world, we have only begun to domesticate ourselves.
Think about how we still have seen genocides in our own time.
Our AI will hopefully pacify these instincts. Most likely not without a fight from certain parties that will consider their right to war absolute.
Like the one ring, how much of the agressiveness will get poured into our AI?
What if our AI, in the exploration of space, encounters another AI? Will it be like the early humanoid species, where we either wipe out or get wiped out ourselves?
Will our AIs have completely abstracted away all the senseless violence?
If you want a really depressing answer, read the second book of 3 body problem: The Dark Forest.
I start by cleaning something. It can be something small, like getting the clutter off my desk, but something where I can have very immediate seeable progress. That can usually get the productivity ball rolling.
There will not be a singularity. Global capitalism will absolutely collapse and on its way will become more dystopian. Humanity isn’t going extinct.
E: the cause of this process is not human nature. Anyone who tells you it is has simply failed to study history. We can have a utopia but global capital has to collapse first to make space for it.
I would imagine that the biological phase for intelligent life is rather short, and I expect that in the long run intelligence will transition to post biological substrates.
I’d argue that inventions of language and writing are the landmark moments in human development. Before language was invented the only way information could be passed down from ancestors to offspring was via mutations in our DNA. If an individual learned some new idea it would be lost with them when they died. Language allowed humans to communicate ideas to future generations and start accumulating knowledge beyond what a single individual could hold in their head. Writing made this process even more efficient.
When language was invented humans started creating technology, and in a blink of an eye on cosmological scale we went from living in caves to visiting space in our rocket ships. It’s worth taking a moment to really appreciate just how fast our technology evolved once we were able to start accumulating knowledge using language and writing.
Our society today is utterly and completely unrecognizable to somebody from even a 100 years ago. If we don’t go extinct, I imagine that in another thousand years future humans or whatever succeeds us will be completely alien to us as well. It’s pretty hard to predict what that would look like given where we are now.
With that caveat, I think we can make some assumptions such as that future intelligent life will likely exist in virtual environments running on computing substrates because such environments could operate at much faster speeds than our meat brains, and what we consider real time would be seem like geological scale from that perspective. Given that, I can’t see why intelligences living in such environments would pay much attention to the physical world.
I also think that we’re likely to develop human style AIs within a century. It’s hard to predict such things, but I don’t think there’s anything magic regarding what our brains are doing. There are a few different paths towards producing a human style artificial intelligence.
The simplest approach could be to simply evolve one. Given a rich virtual environment, we could run an evolutionary simulation that would select for intelligent behaviors. This approach doesn’t require us to understand how intelligence works. We just have to create a set of conditions that select for the types of intelligent behaviors we’re looking for. This is a brute force approach for creating AGI.
Another approach could be to map out the human brain down to neuron level and create a physics simulation that would emulate a brain. We aren’t close to being able to do that technologically yet, but who knows what will happen in the coming decades and centuries.
Finally, we might be able to figure out the algorithms that mimic what our brains do, and build AIs based on that. This could be the most efficient way to build an AI since we’d understand how and why it works which would facilitate rapid optimization and improvement.
My view is that if we made an AI that had human style consciousness then it should be treated as a person and have the same rights as a biological human. While we could never prove that an AI has internal experience and qualia, I think that morally we have to err on the side of trusting the AI that claims to have consciousness and self awareness.
I expect that post biologicals will be the ones to go out and explore the universe. Meat did not evolve to live in space because we’re adapted to gravity wells. An artificial life form could be engineered to thrive in space without ever needing to visit planets. This is the kind of life that’s most likely to be prolific in space.
One of the best sci fi novels I’ve read on the subject would be Diaspora by Greg Egan. It seems like a plausible scenario for the future of humanity.
You need to build a “reputation” with other servers. If your server is online, then some instances lose messages or just plain fail to load your content. So, first off, you need to be online all the time.
And it takes a lot of bandwidth! Each message, like and post anyone makes on every instance might come from any other instance, so servers need to have enough bandwidth to talk to each other all day.
There’s also the problem of storage. You don’t only store your own content, but also a “cache” of other people’s content, so you don’t need to request it again every time.
There’s even a need for energy. Your server might connect to a lot of other servers, so you might need to have a beefy cpu to process all of that (so no running on batteries)
What you describe exists, actually. It’s called “peer to peer” (often called “p2p”). There are some p2p networks, like scutterbutt which runs on top of the “gossip” network.
They have their own problems, tho.
Federated networks, where you join a server and servers can talk to each other (instead of directly running on the users device) are a middle ground.
On a server only network, like reddit, means everything is controlled by one entity (reddit).
With a p2p network, you have the problems I’ve described before (and lots more)
And finally, a federated network like lemmy exists in between. You join a server, but are not limited to that server. If you don’t like something in your server, you can join some other server or even mount your own, and still be part of the bigger network. With the rules you desire to follow!
I had to smuggle myself into my own country through an illegal dirt road with sketchy people, in a zone that is very well known for being controlled by Guerrilla and they just had a lethal confrontation with the Colombian military the day before.
For me it was a really scarry experience, but for the people living there, is just tuesday.
I don’t mean to be a Debbie downer but even I have trouble enjoying Lemmy because of some of it’s problems/quirks. I don’t think it’ll be anywhere near as popular as alternatives with those problems present. I hate it but that’s how I feel. I hope it gets better
Pages not loading or error’ing out, general usability stuff, like pictures in the feed snapping back to small/icon size causing the feed to jump around, posts opening in the same window and going back takes me all the way to the top/start of my feed, the confusion around interoperability between instances (can I just log in with my account on another instance? Do i need a new account?), etc.
I’m on mobile, so maybe that’s a large part of my complaint, but when ya come from Reddit, it’s hard to not see things Reddit does well that you miss.
It’s also very likely some of this is simply user error, I am not an expert, but I feel like if it’s confusing or not intuitive for me, then it’s probably room for improvement.
Edit: Idk what changes were made in the most recent update to Lemmy but a lot of my complaints here no longer appear to me occurring, so that’s great news!!
There are plenty different types of meditation that you can look into.
To start, try to sit for just a minute or two, lightly close your eyes, and slowly count your breaths in and out without trying to control your breathing. Each time your mind wanders, bring it back to your breath.
My friend and I got stopped by the police in Cozumel for driving on the wrong road. They threatened to take our IDs, which led to the need to bribe them not to. Not necessarily scary in a “fear for my life” way, but it also delayed us enough that we had to ride a rented moped in the dark for a few miles to get back in time for the ferry.
definitely watch it with them. just faking it will only get you so far before the act falls apart. it’ll also help you build your relationship with them if you show interest in picking up and learning stuff she likes IMO
