ChaosInstructor, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

let’s really show ones age…not really embarrassed, but it is not something i listen to today. Top pops - Mammy blue

I’m browsing lemmy from Memmy (iOS app), and had to triple-read your post before my brain would register it as Mammy.

ccryx, in Craziest YouTube Video ID?

As someone who has never thought about YouTube video IDs: is that a thing? Is there a small but tightly knit community of youtube video ID connoisseurs?

Not really a question, is it?

There’s the classic YouTube video which contains it’s own ID in the video: youtu.be/j70AA9arThc

WeLoveCastingSpelz, in Do you think Technology makes us more lonely...?

Technology is but a tool, If someone prefers looking at their phone than dealing with you it’s a you ptoblem

nawordar, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

My Galaxy S8 had a lot of annoying problems both on stock ROM and Lineage OS. After three years I switched to Zenfone 8 and so far I am satisfied. The battery life is crap though, especially after updating to Android 13. I’m considering a downgrade if it’s even possible

Cheery, in Which learning path makes the most amount of sense?

As a front-end developer with 10 years of experience, I’d suggest going with JavaScript. It’s one language for both stacks, you can learn the core front and back end ideologies, and if you decide to go with a different language for back-end, it shouldn’t take too much time to learn afterwards. From my experience it would be easier both to learn and potentially to get a job in the field.

Magrid, in How can I filter my Lemmy feed by language?
@Magrid@lemm.ee avatar

try going in the Lemmy settings and select your language, but note that most of the post is marked as “undefined” so it probably won’t make a big difference

theNoob,

Thanks. I’m using Android apps for Lemmy and Jerboa, Connect & Liftoff don’t show those settings. I just found them using Chrome

Magrid,
@Magrid@lemm.ee avatar

doesn’t Jerboa have it? If I remember correctly I saw it

TeaHands, in How can I filter my Lemmy feed by language?
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Select “undetermined” and “english” in your profile language settings. Plus whatever else you speak, obviously.

ulu_mulu, in How can I filter my Lemmy feed by language?
@ulu_mulu@lemmy.world avatar

I’m doing it exactly like I was doing it on reddit, that is, build up my personal home page with all the communities I want to see then I changed my settings to default to subscribed when opening Lemmy instead of All.

Every now and then I check the list of all communities to see if there’s something new worth following, that way it’s also easier to avoid communities that do a lot of spamming, overwhelming the smaller (more interesting IMO) ones.

danie10, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?
@danie10@lemmy.ml avatar

Well firstly your senses do start dulling (eyesight, hearing), and secondly you have way more context on the world itself (the mortgage bond, climate change, pollution, family responsibilities, social media trolls, the fragility of bones and life, etc). So I suppose your brain is less focussed on the moment, and you’ve got a bit cynical about life ;-)

I accept that the way I looked at life and moments at 15, 25 and 50 are fairly different. Decisions I took at 25 were right for me then, but today I would have decided differently, but then I would not be where I am today either.

RustedSwitch, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

The last top-40’s song I memorized after listening to it so many times was Mr Big, be with you. A basic unrequited love song without much depth. I was 14.

It was around that time that my neighbor introduced me to Nine Inch Nails,and changed the course of my musical taste forever.

For a long time I was very focused on just industrial, grunge, ska, and electronic. I eventually started expanding into prog-like music from across genres (complex melodies and instrumentation, but not just rock, ie newgrass, IDM).

Eventually I met my now-wife and, while she already shared much of my taste spectrum, she also listened to pop charting stuff, and over the years I opened back up to it. Some of its not bad if you give it a chance. Bruno Mars is a legend!

daddyjones,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

No shame in Mr Big. Paul Gilbert is a guitar hero!

Ok - almost no shame…

RustedSwitch,

Ha! I don’t know enough about the band to have heard of that guy! I’ll take your word for it 😜

“Waited on a line of greens and blues (waited on a line) Just to be the next to be with you”

That line just creeps me out.

RustedSwitch,
@RustedSwitch@lemmy.world avatar

What does that even mean

1draw4u, in Is it normal for a person to "feel" less as they get older?

I recently read that in a neurotypical human being, the succession of two experiences only has a big impact on brain activity for the first experience, while the second makes a smaller spike. In psychotic patients on the other hand, the impression makes two equally large spikes both times. In the experiment, the experience was hearing a ballpoint pen click. So maybe being dulled to former experience is important for the brain to function properly, just a side effect of our natural brain filter.

MothBookkeeper,

That’s sad, but comforting in a way.

kender242,
@kender242@lemmy.world avatar

The prefrontal lobe is the part of your brain responsible for saying “hush”

i.e. that’s not a novel idea/stimulus anymore

jandar_fett,

This makes a lot of sense to me. I am trying to link it to survival and evolution, but can’t pin anything down off the top of my head. I’m going to continue mulling it over though.
