PartialPenguin, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I lift weights a few days in the week and it’s just routine now. I don’t find working out to be fun, but seeing friends at the gym and and chatting is fun.

Bristlecone, in What's it like working night shift?

Worked them for some years and they literally caused me to start having panic attacks. Hate them.

kelvie, in What is the best anonymous image hosting site?

I wonder if there’s a federated solution for this, which means that you just need a techie friend who can self host this for you

upt, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I hate cardio, so that’s what I do. Weird thing, but I figured if I hate something it’s the thing I need to work on. Besides, it seems like cardio is the thing that helps you lose weight the fastest.

Machinist, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?
@Machinist@lemmy.world avatar

Machining and blacksmithing are highly correlated with right wing BS in the US. Check my uname and ask me how I know. 😁

FierroGamer,

This one may not be so obvious, but I’ve seen someone lose their marbles over the crazy idea that they get recommended stuff for children when all they watch on YouTube is Minecraft videos and sometimes Roblox. And people in the comments agreed…

The YouTube subreddit wasn’t full of bright people.

dan, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I don’t understand it either. The only reason I upgraded from my Galaxy S10 was because the USB port no longer worked. I could still charge it via wireless charging, but it was annoying not being able to plug it into my car to use Google Maps. If the USB port didn’t break, I’d probably still be using the old S10.

Blizzard, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
cwagner, in Age Verification On Lemmy

That is only relevant for instances hosted in Germany, and also why feddit.de and discuss.tchncs.de (like most instances, though) defederated from NSFW instances.

Age gates are a joke and almost no one uses them, xhamster even flouts the law and changes the German subdomain whenever there is a new idiotic ISP DNS block.

Related anecdote: I was hosting an erotica forum (which I started doing when I was 14 or 15 …) when the law came to be, we had to get a Jugendschutzbeauftragter (youth protection officer; luckily something that existed “as a service” for like 5€/month) and implement an age gate. This killed the site.

Mostly dark. But also quiet.

newguy208, in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?

Before you go on an omnicide on the entire species, consider planting Neem tree. These naturally repel mosquitoes. You can also get their oil to burn in oil dispenser etc but be warned it stinks like hell. I prefer to have a small pot of it next to the window and once it grows big enough, put it in a permanent place in the ground.

Nomad,

There is nothing about insect repelling qualities for the tree itself in the article you linked.

PotjiePig, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

I’ve got a pair of nice old Japanese wooden bookshelfs hooked up to a NAD amp that plays both my records and my TV/PS. That does the heavy lifting, for my office I have some good but generic over ears that get the job done. And then I have a pair of planar earbuds ‘LetShoer S12’:which are awesome bit I don’t use often because they’re quite sharp for long sessions but sound fantastic.

Shift_, in What's it like working night shift?
@Shift_@kbin.social avatar

I personally love working nights. I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. In fact I am actively worse at things the earlier I wake up. Conversely my brain feels clearer and more active after 10pm.

That being said, my social life is almost entirely online. I rarely go out IRL. I sleep like a rock and only need about 6 hours anyway.

If you are someone who needs to talk to people, has trouble sleeping during the day, or requires a lot of sleep, the night shift is likely not for you.

Some people are built for it, some aren't.

BrainisfineIthink, in What's it like working night shift?
@BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one avatar

Your concerns are valid, you absolutely will see your family less. If you’re not okay with that, that’s okay! Also keep in mind that the world is not on a night shift. It’s significantly harder to sleep normal hours when everything is going on the regular day schedule. That might not matter where you are but where I live that means more noise, more sirens, more people coming and going and keeping me awake. I’m a naturally light sleeper so when I had to work nights I had to go an extra mile or two. Blackout curtains are essential, and you may want to shove a towel under the door if the sun angle is unfavorable and shines it there. I also needed a facemask and ear plugs until I discovered I preferred a nice white noise maker. I still sleep with a white noise machine to this day, love it.

There are good things to night shift too. Less bullshit all around generally. Depending on what you’re doing that can be good or bad. It can be mind numbingly boring if you don’t have a set amount of work to do.

It takes a while. A long while. But once you develop a habit, a day will feel empty without your routine exercise, and doing it will feel real good.

The important thing is to find what works for you and do that. I bounced off many gym programs and could not keep up with them. Then I hurt my leg and decided to talk to a physical therapist. He developed a program for me that’s easy to stick to, yet challenging enough.

Not everyone’s into jogging and lifting. Look and ask around. Good luck!

jordanlund, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

The big reason is updates. Phones will only get Android and security updates for so long. After that point, you buy a new phone or run the risk of being exposed.

cuppaconcrete,
@cuppaconcrete@aussie.zone avatar

Yeah I should bite the bullet and get a Pixel, they normally get the longest updates support or am I wrong? This habit of going for a budget phone and it becoming unusable/unsafe after 3 years is just a hidden cost I’m in denial over 😞

Mr_Vortex,

The Pixels get 3 years of major version upgrades and 5 years of security updates from Google. After that point if the battery is still working well enough for you, you could always try installing something like Graphene OS on it.

Double_A,
@Double_A@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Yeah but not one year. Even the shittiest brand will give you security updates for at least 3 years.
