neko, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Instance admins can simply disable downvotes. You don't need them.

Most are trackerware. I was using Post Images but they ban your IP if you bypass their tracker links and link to images directly. If you only have a few images, or you don’t mind kicking a guy a few bucks for self hosting there is catbox.moe. If you’re only needing temporary hosting that same guy has litterbox.moe.

If you are concerned about posting images directly to the larger instances, don’t be. They have cheap third party storage options setup, and all the images are cached on the instances anyways. External hosting is only helpful for long term storage and small instances that host communities. It wouldn’t hurt to kick a buck or two into the pot to help the instances you use a lot. It’s like $5 per terabyte per month for 3rd party storage.

frizzle,

Can you go more in-depth about trackerware? After looking around, I found Post Images to be the one I like the most.

I use Mullvad VPN at all times, so I am not too worried about tracking, but I would like to know if it might be a bigger issue than I think it is.

teawrecks, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

Most people I know sleep with a fan on for this reason. Really common, yeah.

whodoctor11, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?
@whodoctor11@lemmy.world avatar

Man I would turn off the activity collect and erase it’s history in myaccount.google.com, besides do the same thing with anything else, like YouTube history. Bad things still show up, but you receive more things related to your subscriptions. When you receive bad things just hit the three points and go to “Don’t recommend this channel” (for me is more effective than “Don’t recommend content like that”).

That’s a very common YouTube complain and have a simple explanation: this alt-right folks are the top adversities on social media. They pay millions to Google to do this.

AdmiralShat, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I buy used flagships.

A 1.5 year old flagship costs the same as a brand new midrange phone, but is significantly better.

I just got a S21 Ultra for cheaper than I would have paid for an A54. (Also Exynos is hot fucking garbage. I wanted to get away from Samsung altogether, but the price on this made sense and I has a snapdragon. Significantly better)

NightOwl, in What is the best anonymous image hosting site?

A feature I’d like to see is a place that allows uploads without an account, but provides a randomly generated seed for each upload you can save and use it to delete an image without needing an account like is normally required.

frizzle,

That’s what I would like too.

Unpopular4810,

randomly generated seed

What do you mean by this? Usually these hosters offer a link to delete images.

fubo,

This would be a tripcode authorization system.

NightOwl,

Oh so they provide a deletion URL to keep for safe keeping? Yeah that’d basically be the function I was hoping for.

heavyboots, (edited ) in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@heavyboots@lemmy.ml avatar

Anything where the scenery moves, yes I am enjoying it whether I’m riding, biking, hiking, inline skating, trail running, etc. I think part of what works for me is I almost never repeat the same route twice and if I feel myself getting burnt out on one activity I switch it up and do something else. Too much road biking? Go mountain biking? Too much of any kind of biking. Go trail running or inline skating, or at least go for a hike.

But weights and gym stuff? No. Just no, I cannot.

Lucidlethargy, in What is the best anonymous image hosting site?

Pixelfed seems decent!

teawrecks, in What password manager do you recommend?

Keepass is

  • open source and free
  • just uses a file, so you can sync it wherever/however you want
  • has a browser plugin with autofill if you’re into that
  • is supported on all platforms
  • database lives in an encrypted file that you put wherever you choose
sonstwas,

For syncing I use Syncthing. It’s open-source as well and syncs two/multiple devices without the need for cloud-storage

Apytele, (edited ) in Is there an easy way to bring all my old technical posts from Reddit to Lemmy?

.

jaschen,

Thanks!!

Encode1307, in What is the best anonymous image hosting site?

I haven’t used it, but this might be what you’re looking for?

pixelfed.org

frizzle,

I like that it is federated, but I wish I didn’t have to make an account. This might be the best option though.

tourist,
@tourist@community.destinovate.com avatar

From someone who has tried pixelfed, it is basically a photo post filter for mastodon. You can see photo posts people make on mastodon from pixelfed and you can see pixelfed posts from Mastodon. So as mastodon apps improve and you can filter posts by content type (maybe you already can?) than pixelfed is basically irrelevant and/or equivalent to a photography focused mastodon instance.

Chozo, in What's it like working night shift?

I've been working a night shift for a few years now. Last 2 of which have been from at home. The social isolation is real. The only people you'll ever really get to hang out with outside of work, are the people you work with, since most of your normal-sleep-schedule-having friends aren't gonna be available when you are. There also won't be anywhere good to hang out at because everything's closed by the time you're off work.

Most of the world isn't designed for people with our schedule, unfortunately. Need to go to the post office for something? You're gonna have to either get up early or stay up late to do it. Need to do something that can really take up some time, like go to the DMV? You might need to schedule some time off, because that'll ruin your sleep schedule for a few days.

Being able to retain your sanity on this schedule really does require a bit of self-sufficience. You'll need to rely less on services that aren't available at night. You'll need to get comfortable with losing sleep to get important stuff done. It's tough, and while a lot of companies pay a differential to hourly employees on the night shift, it's rarely enough to justify the toll it takes on you if you don't have the right mindset for it.

dis_honestfamiliar,

The differential is usually not enough. I mean almost no income is enough to lose sleep time and time again. Just saying.

Anyway. I’m curious, so please share. What do you do exactly and how did you get to L2?

djsaskdja, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
UnelectedReimu, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I bought a Redmi Note 11 pro last year and it’s a great phone! Really though, buying new phones every year is something only well off people can afford (or people who are ok getting into lots of credit card debt). There really is no point right now, newer phones just aren’t that much better and in fact smartphone sales worldwide are slowing down exactly because everyone who wants a good enough smartphone already has one. My current phone does absolutely everything I need, in fact it’s much more powerful than my first laptop ever was, I can emulate most retro consoles, watch uhd videos, use any app I need, listen to all the music I want, I can even do things like use microsoft office on it. I don’t need a new one, this works just perfect for me. The only thing that would make it better is to get it rooted so I can install a custom rom and get rid of xiaomi’s bloatware infested android rom

yoz, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

This can’t be any more clearer

Android TV- install smartnexttube Android phone- Set private DNS to Nextdns and block all ads + install firefox w/ unlock origin Or if you want an app install - newpipe from fdroid app store
