The Lemmy apps are fine, but I’ve been disappointed in the quality of Lemmy posts and discussion. It’s too many memes, not enough good quality thoughts, discussion, content, community. It’s unfortunate. Wanted this to be the place I die.

sjatar,
@sjatar@sjatar.net avatar

Had the same issue so I removed most meme communities ^^ It’s just to easy to post them, they rank high on the filters as well

zdrvr,

Make two accounts on different instances. One for Memes one for discussion and just switch back and forth depending on what you are in the mood for.

Mereo, (edited )

Block the communities you don’t want to see in your profile settings. That way, you’ll see more meaningful posts. That’s what I did, I blocked all memes communities.

eric5949,

I don’t care so much about the memes, but the moderation on the meme subs is severely lacking. I’ve seen enough shit and dicks in the last 3 days I just temporarily blocked the instance the accounts were coming from until they figure out their shit.

Thorny_Thicket,

Agreed. And not just memes but quite shitty ones especially recently. Filling the front page with beans is worse than not posting at all

ShoePaste,
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

I totally agree, it is getting better though. I’m trying to keep in mind that it’s only been a couple weeks. new communities take time to grow. i think a big issue with lemmy is there’s so many options so there’s competition between communities for content but there just aren’t enough users to go around. it’ll get there though. one thing i do like though is that i’ve been getting more quality engagement on posts and comments i make. i’m not feeling attacked by replies or seeing pointless comments like “this!”, ya know?

echoplex21,

What I did was unsubscribe from the meme communities. When I want a laugh I’ll go on “Global” and see them. Switch to subscribed to see better discussion.

phoukas,

I had a similar experience and just started blocking all the meme instances. Much better so far!

Venutianxspring,

Just block the meme communities and it makes this place a much more engaging site. There’s obviously not the same level as reddit yet, but with time it will get there.

babyphatman,

You can do the opposite too… Subscribe to the communities you like, and have that be your front-page. Then browse all when you’re feeling freaky!

Venutianxspring,

That’s what I do, but they were mentioning that they wanted to browse all, but the memes were ruining it for them. I’m usually on all so I can keep an eye out for new communities to join

dingus,

The problem is I like memes…I just don’t want to ONLY see memes. It’s just that Lemmy’s sorting algorithm is not as robust as Reddit. With Reddit my subscription feed would show me all of my communities, even if there was a large difference in size of them. My small communities still showed up in my subscriptions feed because Reddit had a more balanced algorithm. With Lemmy, the most popular communities flood out all the others. If the devs made the sorting work better we could have a more balanced experience.

xapr,

Good point. I think the sorting algorithms should be the number one priority for Lemmy devs at the moment.

RogueTyre,

Seems quite the opposite for me. Every 1 in 3 posts are either discussion or news reports.

Edit: actually it looks more like every other post with sometime 6 or 7 continuous ones without a meme

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve found that the trick is not to actually sub to meme communities, even if you want to see them. That way you can browse your subscribed feed for all the discussion on the topics you want, but then you can switch over to All > Top Day or whatever and still end up seeing most of the memes in there because they’re so popular.

tj111,

Yeah this is what I do. My subscribed feed is all news and discussion (and good discussion at that!), and then I go to All to see the memes. I first I subscribed to a meme community or two and it dominated my feed.

somedaysoon,
@somedaysoon@lemmy.world avatar

I figured that out too, I usually start off with my subscribed feed for interesting discussion and news articles (but you have to sub to the right sublems), then I might hop over to the all feed for memes and random pr0n and anything that maybe I missed or new popular communities. Then I jump over to another account on a smaller regional instance and hit the local feed there. I get plenty of interesting discussion and articles… and I think it is way better than reddit has been in the last 10 years. It reminds me of reddit when I joined 15+ years ago. So I’ve had the direct opposite experience as @Pmmeyourtoaster , the discussions here have been exponentially better than reddit has been for a long, long time now.

I will say that for like the first day or two I spent a good amount of time searching out and subbing to different sublems. I also used multiple different tools to find them. Two of the main ones being the built in Reddit Migration tool in Voyager, another being sub.rehab

dingus,

Yeah I think this is ultimately what I’m going to have to do. A bit annoying but oh well!

mavedustaine,

It’s kinda hitting the early 2010s 9gag nostalgia for me right now with all the shitty memes.

Drastically reduced my usage and now spend that time on other side projects / reading. I miss the large volume of comment but don't miss being treated like an obstacle (like how reddit leadership sees their users)

tylerthehuman, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

i still scroll a little bit. a few subs with content i cant really get anywhere else. tbh the content on lemmy is very bare so i’ll scroll twitter more…

dotslashme, in How do other Europeans survive the raining season in Asia?

Used to live in Singapore and my recommendations are to use thin Uniqlo Airism tees or tank tops underneath your tee or shirt. Plan your routes so you know where to find aircon or fans, always walk slowly and make sure to hydrate. There are also body sheets that you can use to freshen up.

siderealyear, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Nope, not at all. Uninstalled weeks ago. Actively avoid in search results. Had been subconsciously looking to move on for a long time. See ya later, better things to do and places to be.

a4ng3l, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I slipped maybe twice by accident via google search results but that’s it. Until I need to get opinions to buy something it will be okay I guess.

Two subreddits that I check on occasion for information/memes, both of which I’m hoping will eventually gain traction here. I don’t have an account though.

I use it for finding information on Google, but other than that nah

lvxferre, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@lvxferre@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t use it any more. At most when people refer to something Reddit here, specially in c/snoocalypse, I check it then archive it then link the archive.

That said I don’t blame people who still use it, even if I encourage people to not to.

I literally only use it to check if there's a new Chainsaw Man chapter out so I open r/ChainsawMan once every two weeks, that's about it

BromSwolligans, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Sometimes I open up the home page to see what’s up, then I see what’s up is less interesting than it used to be and less interesting than what’s happening here. And I close it pretty quickly. I’m still using it as part of my Google searches when I need quick human answers. It’s gonna continue to be a historical resource in that regard. No getting around that. But my account only exists so that I can access those resources without too much fuss. It’s not something I use to post or contribute. I used the Sign In With Apple feature to just generate a throwaway anonymous account after I deleted my 11 year old account.
