Nope. Having finally hammered down the local vernacular (“instances”/“communities”) of Lemmy, I am so at home here. I miss RiF, but Liftoff is serving me well

uglytruck, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I was on the way out a couple of months before the API thing. The content had gotten stale and it was harder and harder to have honest conversations. Posts getting down voted - for every up vote there was a down vote no matter how much it changed. I made a post once that went somewhat viral and it was nothing but a toxic shit show. All I was doing was sharing a hardware mod - not asking for help or opinions. I had really grown tired of it. This migration to the Fediverse was well timed for me. Now have I gone back? Not intentional, like others have said looking for answers - not engagement.

Only rss of gamedeals and buildapcsales. Those are functionally useful subs. Good deal alerts.

Have no interest in anything else like random discussions in hobbies or games or television or shows or sports which are stuff that are easy to quit. Even /r/Heat family I have left behind despite basically no activity here. Those are more entertainment and don’t offer utility. That includes niche subs I enjoyed like gunpla or dedicated tv show or game subs. It just falls into category of entertainment that isn’t so useful I need it.

I knew it essentially coming to a close when I didn’t have Reddit Enhancement Suite installed anymore.

I don’t but if I have a question I’ll google and add site:reddit.com for sure…

I still use Reddit, I didn't move here because I was pissed at apps going away (never used them anyway), just wanted to familiarize myself before I'll be forced to move when they inevitably remove old reddit in the future.

There's still communities important to me that either only exist on Reddit or have way too little engagement here. Until they remove old reddit or that changes, I'll stay on reddit. But I'm doing my part by having disabled ads on reddit (I had them enabled before the third party app stuff).

Zarxrax, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

The RIF app was reddit to me. I would typically spend over an hour per day on it.

I do still check Reddit maybe once a day on my desktop, maybe for about 5 minutes. There are still a few communities on there which don’t have an active alternative here on Lemmy. However, I have deleted all my old posts and comments, and I do not make any new ones.

Some of the specific communities are there but not here or barely alive here (like my phone’s brand) so I’m visiting them from PC. Spez gets no moni because I’m always using unblock there though

Alivrah, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to spend hours everyday there. Now I only visit for a few minutes a week to check up on a game.

But I’ll never touch the official app and I’ll never come back, even if they backtracked the API decision, because f u/spez

I’ve done some Google searches and looked at Reddit results, and I view some choice subreddits on an RSS feed. But I have not logged in to Reddit since Apollo went down. Lemmy still seems to be getting better every day. While the content drought is still there I have taken to reading a book at night before bed instead. I’m hoping that just becomes a long lasting habit in lieu of scrolling.

odium, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I’ve only touched Reddit when it comes up when I google something. Haven’t used it for anything else for the past month or so.

I was pondering about a Mastodon/Kbin issue this morning and the first 10 google hits were on r/kbinmigration :[

inspxtr, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Yes, though to a much lesser extent than I used to. Sometimes it’s just through web searches that lead to Reddit, though I use Libreddit front-end for that.

And other times, it’s specific subreddits about TV shows. The level and frequency of discussion on Lemmy sadly is not there yet for popular shows, and nonexistent for niche shows.

phoenix591, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

theres a couple communities stuck on there I still check on, but no longer casually browse.

Zarxrax, in What's the first dream you remember having?

So there used to be this cartoon called Silverhawks, which was about these dudes who are partially made of metal and they can fly.

First dream I can remember, I was at the doctor and they wanted to give me a shot in my leg. I was really afraid of needles at the time, but suddenly I became a Silverhawk. The nurse was trying to stick the needle in my thigh, but my thigh was metal, so her plan was foiled.

planish,

That’ll stop her for sure!

Brochetudo, in Those who tried Linux and went back to Windows, what caused you to go back to Windows?

There is no AMD Adrenaline software so I can’t properly use my AMD card

5redie8,

What were you trying to do, out of curiosity?

Barbarian,
@Barbarian@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s really surprising to me. I’ve been buying AMD only for many years now specifically because they have better Linux compatibility than Nvidia.

Salix,

I think they are talking about the features of the software. On Windows, both AMD & NVIDIA has a program suite that can do a lot of things that are much more convenient than installing multiple programs and trying to configure them all.

Having an RX 6800, I’m really satisfied with it it when I boot Linux. So far it didn’t let me down.

@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

What were you missing? Just curious.

On the bright side in Linux we have ROCM. In windows they still haven’t released it.

Brochetudo,

I am running the RX6500XT graphics card, which if you try to use in a plug and play fashion, you’re completely out of luck when it comes to running any mildly new game out there in ultra or high settings.

However, the AMD Adrenaline software allows you to mess up with upscaling and many, many other goodies for you to fine tune performance and reach that ultra or high quality in (pretty much) all the games I usually play.

There’s no way I’m playing with low settings on Linux when AMD developed some amazing tools for people that like hacking around with their cards. It’s just a pity they still work only on Windows.

Edit: in my experience, ROCm didn’t work in my particular card. Moreover, in order to try an installation of those drivers I was forced to use distros I’m not familiar with like Ubuntu. I had to ssh to my university labs for any ML task.

Thanks for sharing. I have an RX 6800 and Ubuntu 23.04

  • To be honest the only thing I’m missing from the Control Panel (a thing that I always enable in all games) is “RIS” (Radeon Image Sharpening).
  • Control+Shift+O: I replaced it by running "Mangohud"
  • Radeon Chill (to cap FPS a bit below my max refresh rate, example 141 fps limit): I replaced it with "Mangohud"
  • FreeSync: Well I just have to enable it and run Gnome in Xorg on the logon screen… (instead of Ubuntu wayland).
  • Overclock: I’m not doing in Linux because I don’t run super heavy AAA like Warzone 2.0. But I have tried CoreCtrl and seems to work. (After enabling OC flag for amd).
  • Quick monitoring outside games: “Mission Center” I just installed and it’s very similar to W11 task manager in terms of monitoring.
  • ROCM: it was a pain in the ass to install. I installed some package that enables opencl / rocm while leaving the linux AMDGPU driver. But then it was still not working, and spend days until I finally discovered that I had to add my user to some groups “render” and “video”, something like that. Now I’ve been using it with CUDA apps like SDXL (in python) and it’s working like a charm.

That being said. My main os is W11. If I’m playing a game where my PC is overkill, I stay on Ubuntu (example Monster Hunter Rise or Elden Ring). If I’m playing a game where I need more fps, I go to windows 11 because there is still some % drop by using Proton/Wine etc. Sometimes 20% sometimes 10%. depends. Basically, If the game gives me < 100 FPS in Windows. I stay on Windows.

Littleborat, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

The official app has bad performance and that’s why I only browse on my pc. Usually that’s once a week.
