I came here just to get a measure of how toxic the Lemmy community was going to be and I love that you didn’t disappoint. This is probably the most refreshing dispute I’ve read in a while. Even the most extreme on either side, are mostly speaking their opinions without directing hate at the others contributing to the conversation. Thank you for this!
If I had to guess, given the timing of this, he’s probably on the Hajj. Around this time 1.5 million Muslims make a pilgrimage to fulfill one of the main tenants of the religion, to make a once in a lifetime pilgrimage to Makkah. This is tied to Eid that’s coming in a few days.
Where I suspect this ties in is, one of the steps in this journey is to stay in Mina, which is basically a tent city outside of Makkah. The bathroom facilities are lacking at best, specially if you are used to clean western style sitting toilets. It’s not uncommon for people to walk back to their hotels and take care of business and walk back to their tents. Depending on where the hotel is and where your tent is, this could be a half hour to an hour walk. Let’s just say if someone is very particular about the throne and is situated far from the hotel, fasting and going without food to reduce poop frequency seems like a very attractive option.
In my experience, the bathrooms for the American and Canadian tents weren’t too bad to use in a pinch. And I was blessed that my hotel was only a 15 mins walk, so my wife and I would walk over every morning, take a nice shower and freshen up and walk back (there is a recommended time requirement on how much of each day you can spend outside the boundary of the city). The food there was too tempting for me to go with the no poop route this brave soul is embarking on. (For context, they would have fresh squeezed juices, lamb and rice dishes as big as small cars, teas, coffees, and the sweets were amazing… And it was all free!).
Uninstalled the app, blackholed the domain in my Pi-hole servers, and removed the domain from my web search results on my SearxNG server. I use Wireguard from my phone when out and about, so I’m always usnig Pi-hole and SearxNG.
I think those who are not satisfied with the direction Reddit is going are already here and found a new home. Maybe some will come here after the thrid-party-apps cease to work (if they aren't here already).
The vast majority (the "bulk of Reddit") doesn't bother. As long as they can use Reddit the way they use to they will not leave. It possibly has to do with the fact that these users are not tech-savvy enough in general. I don't mean it in a negative way. They just don't care because they just focus on other things. And with this in mind these users probably checked out Lemmy already but because the buttons are green and their favorite subreddit is not here yet, it is not appealing to them. So they rather stay on reddit.
By crikey, I’ve been tracking this one all day following its ridiculous chewing sounds. Now I’ve barely grounded the blighter and it’s snoring like all get out! I think we best likely leave this one alone, it’s starting to drool.
Look at this beautiful spectacle of nature! You wouldn't know it to see how much time it spends laying in bed, but it's capable of playing Minecraft for 20 hours straight.
I’ve been finding Reddit quite toxic lately, I also find it annoying how much less engaged people are in the actual articles posted and more interested in getting a laugh going off topic.
Steak and eggs, it’s what astronauts use to not shit for days. your body absorbs most of the material rather than excreting it. your looking for anything “low residue”.
Between the removal of nsfw from r/all and my browsing Lemmy there seems to have been quite the explosion in AI generated nudity. One of the things I liked about the r/all nsfw was the “discovery” as I might flip through the days latest news. I say that because the images I’ve seen are whatever you horny bastards upvote enough to make a Top list. The AI images look like bad Instagram filters - or maybe filters that are just too good. It’s almost past the uncanny valley, but not quite. As for the skin tone and ethnicity I just assume that’s the bulk of the user base self-selecting.
I will say that my teenage self would have been salivating at these. The older me finds most of them, if not disturbing/offputting for appearing so young, a bit too perfect for my taste. To drop a quote: “the sadder but wiser girl’s the girl for me” these days.
Honestly I've been wondering why AI porn is so... predictably unusual? Like I would have imagined having AI means we'll have absurd pterodactyl porn, but instead it's just nude photography but AI
iOS because Apple ecosystem is much more convenient and consistent. I do not worry so much about the struggle you mentioned because the EU will fix it (see USB-C, sideoading, more to come)
Reading about stoicism. It’s like an ethical anchor in my life now, a guide to be happy. It’s like the upgraded version of religious belief, perfectly fitting in the 21st century (even though it’s thousands of years old).
Hello, I’m only 22 years old but I want to learn more about this. Will I be able to grasp the depth of the concept at my age or is it inherently for people who have already gained experience in life?
Everyone can understand the basic concepts of stoicism. Most of them are easy to understand, but hard to apply.
Unfortunately I can not recommend any English literature, but I see Deren Browns “Happy” getting recommended a lot. The books I read all had a practical focus, trying to apply stoic ideas to day-to-day life. Most stoics will recommend to also read historical literature, like Marcus Aurelius “Meditations” - this might be a bit too much for beginners.
For me personally, the most helpful stoic idea is the “dichotomy of control”. It basically says that you shouldn’t worry about things or facts you can’t change (“externalities”) and instead focus on the things that actually are under your control. And those are VERY few things.
A trivial example: Why should I worry about the “bad” weather during my holidays? I certainly can not control the weather and by nature, the weather is neither good or bad. It’s my brain that gives a sunny day more value than a thunderstorm. So instead of complaining about the weather, I should try to make the best out of it and maybe even appreciate it.
