WeirdGoesPro, in Hello World!

I’m a Memmy man. ™

Skink, in Where can i find posts with comments?

It depends on what communities and the instances those communities are on. That includes the intentions of the communities themselves. Some are just bots relaying information(certain news communities, tech communities, etc).

So that’s important, and then on top of that it’s important to remember the fediverse is growing, while it’s been around for a number of years it’s still very much new to bunch of people. The amount of users or members compared to twitter, or Reddit(which I’m a refugee from), or facebook, etc is tiny.

So the fediverse is growing and while I love it right now, more and more folks will sign up on different instances and if everything works out the engagement will increase.

geno, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?
  1. Googled “Lemmy” to see what it even is
  2. "wtf is an instance"
  3. Checked some of the most used instances. At this point I wasn’t sure if it matters much, but I just figured it’s best to just pick a popular instance.
  4. found lemmy.world, and the description goes “The World’s Internet Frontpage - Lemmy.world is a general-purpose Lemmy instance of various topics, for the entire world to use.”
  5. “sounds good enough”, created account

Bees couldn’t care less about you unless you’re threatening them. I constantly have bees in my garden and we can peacefully coexist. Fuck wasps though.

hungryphrog,

Please don’t fuck wasps.

Absolutely yes. I'll never go back.

oehm, in what is the safest way to make sure a wasp or a bee won't attack you?

They only sting when they feel threatened. Gently wave them away when they approach you. Don’t let them just land on you freely, because that will up the chances of them just landing in a fold or corner of your clothes and freaking out.

osmn, in Lemmy, what is the scariest/creepiest/eeriest experience you have had while travelling?

I’ve posted this a couple times in similar threads on Reddit, and never really got any speculation. Of course nobody can have a definitive answer, but I’d be super interested to hear what anyone else thinks.

So I had just gotten out of Army basic training about a month prior, and had my first drill at my first unit. It was a pretty long drill, about 5 days, so I was already pretty out of it, and not to mention nervous as hell after meeting my chain of command, etc.

Come the final day of drill we get out really late, like the latest allowable time, 11:59 or some crazy shit. I lived about 2.5 hours away from my unit, and had ROTC PT at 6am the morning after. I was dead exhausted.

I started to leave and got on the turnpike and about 10 minutes into this drive I could already feel the sleep hitting me hard, and I had to pee really bad. I found the first rest station and decided to stop there, pee, and grab a coffee, and maybe a meal. I dragged myself from the car into the station, and walked in a haze towards the bathrooms. Within like, 10 seconds, I realized there was a woman at the sink washing her hands. I was confused for about 5 seconds, then realized my mistake, turned right around and went for the male bathrooms.

I decided to take a stall to sit down and relax for a couple minutes as the rest station was pretty dead. In fact, there was nobody else in the bathroom. I didn’t give it a second thought, and sat down. About 2-3 minutes later I saw 4 sandled feet standing infront of my stall door. Not slightly near the door, but - get this - almost feet sticking under the gap, toes directly facing me. These were not children’s feet either, for sure two grown men.

My heart starts pounding out of my chest. I wait 5 minutes more, and they’re STILL standing right there. What the FUCK is going?!!!

I try to calm myself, take a couple deep breaths and allow myself to think straight. By now it’s been about 10 minutes of them standing right there. I can hear them speaking in Spanish about “this man right here” though my Spanish isn’t that great. I decide to text my dad my location, and tell him to call the police if I don’t respond in 45 minutes.

15 minutes now.

20

30

After about 40 minutes they FINALLY decide to leave. I don’t know where they might be waiting, probably outside the bathroom entrance. I text my dad to postpone another 20 minutes. I wait even longer until I hear another person walk in with a child like pitter patter of footsteps with him. They speak a bit, and it’s very audibly a man and his son.

Without even thinking about how me being targeted could put them in danger, I use the opportunity of witnesses being present to bolt from the stall. I didn’t care about washing my hands, and SUPER WALKED out of the rest station to my car, called my dad to ensure him I was fine, and told him what happened, then went on my way.

I still don’t know what the hell that was. Was I being targeted for “snooping” in the girl’s bathroom? Was a big supporter of the military about to shake my hand? Was I being targeted for being in uniform?

I’ll never know.

crystenn, in My 13yo stepdaughter just recently started watching Gilmore Girls with her mom. What are some good things to say during their post-watch discussions that make it sound like I'm in the know?

definitely watch it with them. just faking it will only get you so far before the act falls apart. it’ll also help you build your relationship with them if you show interest in picking up and learning stuff she likes IMO

I would imagine that the biological phase for intelligent life is rather short, and I expect that in the long run intelligence will transition to post biological substrates.

I’d argue that inventions of language and writing are the landmark moments in human development. Before language was invented the only way information could be passed down from ancestors to offspring was via mutations in our DNA. If an individual learned some new idea it would be lost with them when they died. Language allowed humans to communicate ideas to future generations and start accumulating knowledge beyond what a single individual could hold in their head. Writing made this process even more efficient.

When language was invented humans started creating technology, and in a blink of an eye on cosmological scale we went from living in caves to visiting space in our rocket ships. It’s worth taking a moment to really appreciate just how fast our technology evolved once we were able to start accumulating knowledge using language and writing.

Our society today is utterly and completely unrecognizable to somebody from even a 100 years ago. If we don’t go extinct, I imagine that in another thousand years future humans or whatever succeeds us will be completely alien to us as well. It’s pretty hard to predict what that would look like given where we are now.

With that caveat, I think we can make some assumptions such as that future intelligent life will likely exist in virtual environments running on computing substrates because such environments could operate at much faster speeds than our meat brains, and what we consider real time would be seem like geological scale from that perspective. Given that, I can’t see why intelligences living in such environments would pay much attention to the physical world.

I also think that we’re likely to develop human style AIs within a century. It’s hard to predict such things, but I don’t think there’s anything magic regarding what our brains are doing. There are a few different paths towards producing a human style artificial intelligence.

The simplest approach could be to simply evolve one. Given a rich virtual environment, we could run an evolutionary simulation that would select for intelligent behaviors. This approach doesn’t require us to understand how intelligence works. We just have to create a set of conditions that select for the types of intelligent behaviors we’re looking for. This is a brute force approach for creating AGI.

Another approach could be to map out the human brain down to neuron level and create a physics simulation that would emulate a brain. We aren’t close to being able to do that technologically yet, but who knows what will happen in the coming decades and centuries.

Finally, we might be able to figure out the algorithms that mimic what our brains do, and build AIs based on that. This could be the most efficient way to build an AI since we’d understand how and why it works which would facilitate rapid optimization and improvement.

My view is that if we made an AI that had human style consciousness then it should be treated as a person and have the same rights as a biological human. While we could never prove that an AI has internal experience and qualia, I think that morally we have to err on the side of trusting the AI that claims to have consciousness and self awareness.

I expect that post biologicals will be the ones to go out and explore the universe. Meat did not evolve to live in space because we’re adapted to gravity wells. An artificial life form could be engineered to thrive in space without ever needing to visit planets. This is the kind of life that’s most likely to be prolific in space.

One of the best sci fi novels I’ve read on the subject would be Diaspora by Greg Egan. It seems like a plausible scenario for the future of humanity.

I’ll do you one step better. What about when our ai meets another ai?

Our existence is based on death and war. There is a lot of evidence to suggest we killed off all the other human-like species, such as neanderthals.

And that is the reason we progressed to a state where we have developed our world and society we know today, and all the other species are just fossils.

We were the most aggressive and bloodthirsty species of all the other aggressive and bloodthirsty alternatives, and even though we have domesticated our world, we have only begun to domesticate ourselves.

Think about how we still have seen genocides in our own time.

Our AI will hopefully pacify these instincts. Most likely not without a fight from certain parties that will consider their right to war absolute.

Like the one ring, how much of the agressiveness will get poured into our AI?

What if our AI, in the exploration of space, encounters another AI? Will it be like the early humanoid species, where we either wipe out or get wiped out ourselves?

Will our AIs have completely abstracted away all the senseless violence?

If you want a really depressing answer, read the second book of 3 body problem: The Dark Forest.
