ModernRisk, in do you have multiple lemmy accounts in different instances. why?

Just this one. Don’t need more and don’t need a second account for NSFW, as I’m trying to avoid it.

nicerdicer, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

There is no point. We realised it only recently. If you remember the cell phones from the time before smartphones, there hadn’t been much technological progress. My first cellphone, a Nokia, could store up to 10 short messages. It’s pedecessor had the same storage capacity. Of course, there were technological milestones that have been passed, e.g. antennas which didn’t protrude out of the phone, vibration motors, (in comparison to today) really shitty photo-cameras (and the buggy software that was needed to transfer the photos to the computer), etc.

The point is, that they all were capable to do the same thing: calling and texting. Looking back, there was not really a need to replace the old cellphone. Advertising made us want new shiny things.

This changed when smartphones emerged. Hardware wise, there are not many differences. Some have faster processors than others, others have better cameras. The storage capabilities are sufficient. For the normal user these specifications don’t matter. All smartphones are capable of accessing the (real) internet. The main difference today is in the software (operating system). Older phones run on software that is too outdated to keep pace, and the software support is often limited, which as a result leads to possible security flaws - because the user is supposed to upgrade the hardware, not the operating system only. And that’s why new phones are bought, despite the old ones would still do.

My smartphone ist running on Android 8 (Nougat). It’s still working and is sufficient for my needs. But I wouldn’t run my online banking with that phone. Also, it gets pretty hot and slow when navigating with Google Maps.

Conclusion: It’s not the hardware specifications which lead to the replacement of smartphones. It’s the more complex (security wise) software requirements certain applications (online banking apps, medical apps, e.g. insuline tracking apps, overall more sophisticated apps that runs slow on an outdated smartphone) demand today.

Astaroth, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

I think some way to temporarily exclude/include which communities’ feed show up would be ideal.

And maybe some way to tag or group up communities into collections.

donut4ever, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?
@donut4ever@lemmy.world avatar

Wouldn’t setting the feed to local fix this issue? Anyway, I had to block a couple of communities that were posting 092475097809 posts a second. I saw nothing but those, so I blocked them. All good now.

GiuseppeAndTheYeti, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

Yes, but I figure that’s just the way it will go until the community grows. Give it another couple months of growth and reddit exodus then I imagine we’ll see far more QOL updates to Lemmy and Jerboa.

imaqtpie, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

I am not some teacher grading essays and giving points for good structure.

That’s exactly my point. You are not the ultimate judge of what is good and what is bad. I’m not telling you to upvote things you disagree with, I’m simply telling you to not downvote unless it’s clearly not relevant.

All of your comments on this thread are good comments that I disagree with. Sometimes, disagreement leads to growth.

EtnaAtsume, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

We’ll do this in layers.

I used to worship at the altar of Smashing Pumpkins. Some (though not all) of their stuff holds up pretty good still, I think. They’re good at concepts and imagery. Er, were. Teargarden by Kaleidyscope was kinda the last thing of theirs I bothered with, and I’d started to fall off well before that, too. **Shame level 3/10 **just because I was obsessive about deep-diving every single one of their tracks (from their first few albums anyway).

I was gonna say Linkin Park at first blush, and would have followed through with that, except that just a couple of weeks ago I played through Hybrid theory and thought “y’know, this isn’t my style of music anymore but it’s not bad, not bad at all.” Still, the supposed emotional resonance I had with them puts this at Shame Level 4/10 because, looking back as an adult, most of them are pretty pandering towards angsty teens. Shame Level 4/10

Felt the same about Weird Al. I mean, okay, I cringe at how UPROARIOUS and CLEVER and SUBVERSIVE I thought he was as a kid, but the music is fine for what it is and I feel it accomplishes what he, as an artist, set out to do. And while corny it’s not quite cringy. Shame level 4.5/10

Glenn Miller and other mid-20th-century big-band/swing stuff. Not bad on the face of it, really - still good, in fact, if that’s your thing. But as with the others, the reasoning behind them is the reasoning for the Shame Level 6/10 - yes, I segued into your typical fedora-tipping “le gentleman” Humphrey Bogart wannabe around 2007-2009. Urgh. At least it was before the REAL BIG WAVE of that swept over the Internet and everyone was doing it.

Testament is perhaps my greatest shame since I was desperately trying to become a metalhead but really didn’t care for their music all that much? I figured if I listened to it enough times it’d eventually just all click. NOPE. But I kept on with that for several years. Shame level 8/10. Throw Metallica (esp. Death Magnetic, which I slavishly adored) and your other typical Guitar Hero RAWK EDITION tracks that your typical identity-less 00’s teen woulda latched onto. You get the picture. (Slight redemption: I did discover Gamma Ray through this phase and, as with Smashing Pumpkins above, I relistened the album Heading for Tomorrow and honestly really appreciate the positive/happy/hopeful messages in songs like Heaven Can Wait. A bright little happy diamond among a genre inundated with DEATH AND PAIN AND SUFFERING IS ALL THERE IS.", and it helped me kinda realize that “hey, you don’t gotta be all doom and gloom all the time, man. Light only shines where you let it in.”

Dragged down by some of their other stuff which is weirdly Christian-leaning (nothing wrong with that, nor their spin on it, since it’s not all in your face) and anti-government (which I think they did more as a concept album than anything else, but), which I ran with all the way into the conspiracy-idiot hole for a few years. IT’S THE JEWS MAN. Ugh. GREATEST SHAME. 11/10 (but that’s on me for how I interpreted and interacted with their artwork, not really the art itself)

DLC: Why did I like I My Me Mine so much? I’d blast it everywhere as a teen because I saw it on the Gaia Online profile of some lolsorandumb e-girl – not that we had the term then. Probably just to annoy people.

Speaking of pre-e-girls, there was this other online girl whom I was head over heels with who really liked the uh…weirdly soft “let me fill this emotional void of yours” sort of music, from bands like The Spill Canvas and Jason Mraz and Owl City. OUCH but I didn’t need to remember that, but I did, and I’m putting it down here at the deepest circle of hell.

Sept, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Hiru, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

No I don’t, why would I when there’s Lemmy with all this fine people?

Aatube, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

i just check it twice a week

eldrichhydralisk, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Nope. I quit cold turkey on June 30 and haven’t been back. Well, not on purpose, at least. Sometimes a Google result sends me to Reddit, but when it loads I just close it and move to the next result. Lemmy works fine for everything I used Reddit for.

Corkyskog, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works avatar

No. I only really use my phone for everything. It’s impossible to see the old website on mobile and the regular website is hot garbage, and somehow their app is even worse. There is no way for me to access Reddit and have a pleasant experience anymore.

Reddit basically forced me to go to Lemmy. I was mad at first, but now 3 weeks into it (1 week casual before the Baconreader died and then 2 weeks of redditesque addiction) I really don’t mind. There are some subs I really miss, but hopefully someone makes communities for them soon. (Malicious compliance and HobbyDrama are what immediately pop into my head)

I use it for finding information on Google, but other than that nah

ApollosArrow, in Okay, how do I block all this meme stuff?
@ApollosArrow@kbin.social avatar

While yes, you can block them like people have said (which I do) a new place pops up everyday. It’s like whack a mole. I would love to have some kind of filter that automatically blocks any magazine/community with the word “meme” in it. I would like to not always stay on subscribed so I can see more content and not create and echo chamber for myself.
