multicolorKnight, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

All of the above. Depends. Speakers for when I want to share with others, or no one else will be disturbed. Noise canceling headphones when I want to isolate myself from the surroundings. Ear buds when I want to be portable.

captain_brunch, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

When I find a good deal on a used/refurbished/open box phone on eBay I grab it and throw it in my drawer until my current phone breaks or becomes considerably difficult to use. I haven’t paid more than $250 for a phone in a long time.

raubarno, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?
  1. Free software
  2. Group theory, Church notation and Lambda Calculus making many things in Math under one roof
  3. Design of CPU and Operating Systems. Both fields are made by geniuses.
jrubal1462,

I was kinda oblivious to the world of FOSS until simultaneously switching to Lemmy and also resuscitating an old computer by installing Linux. It took a long time for me to wrap my head around the fact that people are just cranking out parts of OS’s, or pw managers, or file zip utilities for shits and giggles in their free time, and not even charging for it. A game or two as a passion project I could understand, but who sits down after work and plods through a zip utility?

After years and years of “if the service is free, you’re the product” it really takes some time to rewire my brain. It’s almost enough to make me wish I went into software instead of mechanical, so I could pitch in on something.

There have been two discussions on this in the past few days. Please have a look at previous topics.

Jackolantern,

I hope it’s not always the case like in Reddit. This stifles discussion.

This is also almost an impossible task for some since the search function in lemmy is still somewhat lacking.

JimmyDean,

“Somewhat lacking” is putting it nicely. I mainly browse lemmy on Jerboa and it doesn’t even have a function to search community posts, let alone one that is lacking.

acunasdaddy,

Most of us are new here. And frankly it’s very hard to find topics here. Reddit was hard enough but there’s a lot here and the search is ass. Many bugs and limited usability. Please be prettiest and help or this place won’t have a bunch of new users for long.

@TheGiantKorean@lemmy.world avatar

The Serenity Prayer - “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference.”

I don’t consider myself very religious, but this has always stuck with me.

I compete in powerlifting and it’s a lot of fun. You just need a good goal and you’ll end up loving the process of getting there.

Install Linux

raubarno,

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

MementoMori, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

You don’t have to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.

venusenvy47,

I like the silly related quote:

Build a man a fire, and he’ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he’ll be warm for the rest of his life.

Dantpool, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Dantpool@lemmy.world avatar

When you fire that first shot, no matter how right you feel, you have no idea who’s going to die! You don’t know whose children are going to scream and burn! How many hearts will be broken! How many lives shattered! How much blood will spill until everybody does what they were always going to have to do from the very beginning: Sit — down — and — talk!

Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor

amenotef,
@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

For these long dialogues my favorite Doctor.

CopernicusQwark,

That was such a captivating speech. Although he may have had some weak episodes (as does any Doctor), if you need someone to give a captivating direct, Capaldi's Doctor can't be beat!

Electric_leprechaun, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I was at work last week and two colleagues loaded on an apple update to their phones. Their phones slowed to a crawl and lost battery charge quickly through the day. The next thing I saw was one of them with the internet browser open putting his credit card details in to buy a new iPhone £650 gone just like that. iPhone users wouldn’t balk at expensive contracts or spending £600 quid on a new iPhone. It seems to me apple deliberately trash their phones and users accept it and upgrade to a newer model. I could understand if it was a cheap phone but jeeze crazy money for something with such a short lifespan. Would you buy a ln expensive TV if you thought it wouldn’t last you any more than a couple of years?

nan,
@nan@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Plenty of iPhone users rocking iOS 16 on the iPhone 8 (from 2017) with no trouble. For many iPhone users the longevity is one reason they use it. Others will always update to the latest and greatest.

Ecology8622,

Exactly. iPhones are one of the longest if not the longest supported phones. Having said that, there’s no convincing Android users and vice versa.

pineapplelover, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?

Reapply the thermal paste, reinstall windows 10, run CTT windows utility script, dual boot linux, run nextdns on it, use brave and librewolf, update all your firmware.

If it has OOBE you don’t need to reinstall

pineapplelover,

I reinstall just to make sure it is fresh and ridden of all the antivirus and bloatware crap that is installed

Aatube,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

I think just regular uninstalling using tools like https://github.com/Klocman/Bulk-Crap-Uninstaller is way easier

ryathal, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?

Get a bigger/better hard drive, 250gb isn’t going to be that useful unless you really only surf the web or work with basic office documents. The average game nowadays is going to take 15-20% of your drive, the worst offenders won’t even fit on it.

Thanks4Nothing,

This looks like it will work for me, thanks! I do still feel like not having a more baked in solution will be an issue for many.

Spectator, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?
@Spectator@lemmy.world avatar

Consider undervolting (via Throttlestop or Intel XTU) to prolong your laptop’s longevity and possibly mildly increase its performance. For the same CPU workload, undervolting will reduce the amount of heat generation and therefore the temperature of the CPU, thereby decreasing the risk of hitting the CPU’s temperature throttling and risk of CPU damage.

There are ready guides on youtube and r/gaminglaptops sub, but I’ll leave reddit links out for now. Just search for your laptop model since the exact values will depend on the model and also on luck. If you’re lucky, you can undervolt a lot without causing instabilities.

Aatube,
@Aatube@kbin.social avatar

I don’t think it’s faster than just uninstalling especially with that uninstall tool I forgot the name of
