What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

I always loved browsing such posts on reddit, so thought I should make one on lemmy too

Edit: Usually these kind of posts only used to have excerpts from books or ancient proverbs, but now I am seeing a lot more quotes from shows/movies/games are also resonating with people. It’s pretty cool to see.

MrsDoyle,

My father, a union organiser: “You can love the company all you like, but the company will never love you back.”

Stood me in good stead down the years.

dudebro,

That’s only partially true, especially if you think about the definition of ‘company.’

It is completely possible to be in a company that cares about you. Odds are it won’t be a publicly-traded one, though.

sunbeam60,

You’ve got to go through a round of redundancies/layoffs to learn this. No amount of telling some freebie-munching programmer will teach them. Source: I was a freebie-munching programmer.

And the acceptance beyond that is “… and that’s ok, it’s not the company’s job to love you, but don’t for a second be fooled into loyalty”.

Nothing at work is personal, it’s all business. If you believe it’s personal you will get taken advantage by the company.

That’s not too say that there won’t be personal issues at work, just that the company doesn’t care about anything except the business.

In addition, HR isn’t there too protect the employees, they are there to protect the company.

Therevev,

Somwhat related quote from my father in law about being a good worker:

“First year, they like you. Second year, they love you. Third year, they just start using you”

“The enemy of good is perfect.”

saberstan,

I always remembered that one as “perfect is the enemy of done.”

dudebro,

Unfortunately, people have been conflating this to mean ‘the enemy of good is doing anything significant at all.’

tryagain,

Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.

onlinely,

Hanlon’s razor

dudebro,

Probably one of the most pretentious quotes in existence being perpetuated by pseudo-intellectuals.

tryagain,

✨✨Thanks! ✨✨

It hasn’t been that long, only few years, but it always hits me deep:

“Everyone thinks they are the hero of their own story.” - Handsome Jack

Probably not something original, but the voice acting and the scene it was in made it way more powerful than any philosopher in a book could.

dudebro,

Not everyone feels that way.

A lot of people just see themselves as support.

eggvng,

still one of my favorite video game villains!

wheelie,

Take your time

dudebro,

It’s the least thing you’ve got.

Anticorp,

“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not weakness, that is life.”

― Captain Jean-Luc Picard

dudebro,

That’s really rough to accept, but I’ve come to do so.

I still think we should do our best. Nothing hurts more than losing because we didn’t try hard enough.

xapr,

The absence of limitations is the enemy of creativity

  • Orson Welles, I believe
dudebro,

Interesting. As much as I don’t like this, I can’t help but acknowledge it.

The ending of Evangelion talks about it.

If you wish to keep slaves, you must have all kinds of guards. The cheapest way to have guards is to have the slaves pay taxes to finance their own guards. To fool the slaves, you tell them that they are not slaves and that they have Freedom. You tell them they need Law and Order to protect them against bad slaves. Then you tell them to elect a Government. Give them Freedom to vote and they will vote for their own guards and pay their salary. They will then believe they are Free persons. Then give them money to earn, count, and spend and they will be too busy to notice the slavery they are in.” - Alexander Warbucks

dudebro,

To be fair, freedom is being able to go out in the woods and kill an animal or build a shelter or harvest a plant.

Freedom is not relying on society to help you in anything.

Catsrules,

Sounds like a lot of work to have slaves. I think I will just build me some robots.

“Money I got, time I don’t.”

My dad said this offhanded joking remark to me 30 years ago and it lives rent free in my head. It’s a privileged view point for sure but I took it to mean save and be prepared but don’t be frugal toa detriment. Spend on things you love and spend away on things you hate. Don’t waste time if you can afford not to.

DudeWithaTwist,

Do everything in moderation. Including moderation.

Helped me realize I don’t need to be perfect all the time.

dudebro,

That’s actually a tenant of Buddhism in order to achieve Nirvana.

Buddha was big on going ‘the middle path.’

wtvr,

From citizen Kane:

“It’s easy to make a lot of money, if all you want is a lot of money”

Or something to that effect. Think about that line often

Fraeco,

People don’t stop playing because they grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.

Therevev,

Idk. Im 40 and hurt myself on a bouncy slide not long ago.

My body defintely isnt in agreement with how young i feel.

dudebro,

Totally agree.

VirtualAlias,

Comparison is the thief of joy.

dudebro,

That’s good.

shiii,

“it’s just work” –a buddy of mine

helps me every time I’m about to take something personal at work or am annoyed about processes.

dudebro,

“We’re not paid to care.”

ard0gg,

Reminds me of something one of my early mentors told me… “Push the broom to the left, push the broom to the right. It all pays the same”

“Many hands make light work”

As a young child I interpreted this as acknowledging all of the people involved in:

  • Mining and transporting coal
  • Running the powerplant
  • Installing and maintaining the powerlines
  • Wiring the house
  • Manufacturing the lightswitch, light socket, light bulb, etc

All so I can flick a switch and turn on a light in my house. It really shows that all the small things we take for granted rely on a well functioning society.

Then when I was around 10 or so someone used it in a context where it’s usual interpretation was the only one that made sense.

meekah,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

there’s a similar one in german that I really like because it also rhymes (and as we all know, things that rhyme are automatically true)

“viele hände, schnelles ende” / many hands, quick completion

dudebro,

Hm, I first interpreted that as ‘light work’, as in light vs. heavy work. More people contributing eases the burden for all.

meekah,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar

thats the way it usually is interpreted, yes
