What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

I always loved browsing such posts on reddit, so thought I should make one on lemmy too

Edit: Usually these kind of posts only used to have excerpts from books or ancient proverbs, but now I am seeing a lot more quotes from shows/movies/games are also resonating with people. It’s pretty cool to see.

Twofacetony,

“When you do things right, people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all”. -God (futurama)

This little quote helps make me thorough in my work

neptune,

Believe those who are seeking the truth, doubt those who find it

cottard,

Love this one. Reminds me of the quote “never stop looking for what’s not there.”

perviouslyiner,

Just not everyone who claims to be seeking the truth!

It’s not the first thought that comes to mind that matters, what’s important is what you after that

This was in the context of racism. I was raised in an racist environment, and I was struggling with the awful thoughts that had been indoctrinated in to me bubbling up when I encountered folk that were the target of that racism.

That quote helped me not be hung up on guilt and self flagellation, and instead to focus on being the person I want to be, rather than the person I was taught to be.

Sandman89,

We’re just happy to have you over here with us. 😄

dudebro,

I feel really bad for those children being brought up by racist parents.

They have two options: either acknowledge their parents for who they are, or don’t.

My mum wasn’t racist. She’s the one who helped me see that racism isn’t just the way things are. But everyone else in my family, in my town, in the media… It was everywhere…

makanimike,

Not my life because it was a comment on Reddit (at least I think it wasn’t quoted from anything else). But I loved it and I remember it years later still.

As my father told me, There are only three useless things in this world. Nuns’ nipples, bishops’ balls and an employer’s praise without a raise.

"Compassion is priceless in the truest sense of the word. It must be given freely. In abundance. "- Steven Erikson.

“Religion was invented when the first con man met the first fool.” -Mark Twain

“You are too concerned what was and what will be. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called present.”- Master Oogway.

dudebro,

To be fair, religion is a much more abstract concept than people give it credit for.

Think early humans engaging in ‘shamanistic’ rituals (taking psychedelics) and trying to make sense of what they saw.

I believe a lot of the early interpretations of religion have just been bastardized by conmen and those who don’t care to understand the truth.

fckreddit,

I don’t doubt it. Too bad that it then became a tool of control, eventually.

“There isn’t any shame in being weak, the shame is in staying weak” - black clover

eighty,

If you want to travel fast, go alone; but if you want to travel far, go together.

It’s one of those African proverbs with an unknown origin but their emphasis on community has always been a guiding principle for me.

tryagain,

Love this

dudebro,

I like that, a lot.

People will rarely remember what you said, but always remember how you made them feel.

dudebro,

This is 100% true.

Every single quote from Bojack Horseman

dudebro,

I like the one about not being able to save everyone who is drowning.

Some people will just try to pull you down with them.

I recommend watching ‘Undone.’ It’s another show by Bojack’s creator, Raphael Bob-Waksburg.

You can stream it for free here: www6.f2movies.to

Sandbag,

“Be Better”, a college professor/mentor always aid that to me. Whenever I think about taking the easy way or the shortest way I just say “Be Better” and then do the right thing.

dudebro,

Love that.

lingh0e,

So much of the dialog is Deadwood is absolutely brilliant, but one scene really stuck with me.

“Pain or damage don’t end the world, or despair or fuckin’ beatin’s. The world ends when you’re dead. Until then, you got more punishment in store. Stand it like a man — and give some back.”

Ian McShane deserved an Emmy for his work as Al Swearengen. That slow stare at the end of the scene alway kills me. I know it’s supposed to be a drama, but they really go for some laughs.

dudebro,

I don’t like that at all.

Sounds like someone who lacked compassion because it was never given to them.

lingh0e,

You’re not wrong.

I heard one once that goes like “a fool does what he hates, a wise man does what he loves, but a great man learns to love what is necessary.”
I think I am butchering the original phrasing which is probably why I can’t find any source for this quote. But I think about it a lot.

dudebro,

What if you hate it but you’re really really good at it?

corstian,

“One is free from depression when they derive their self worth from the truth of their own feelings, and not from the posession of certain things or qualities.” - Alice Miller, The Drama of The Gifted Child

rikudou,

Sounds nice, doesn’t work.

I_Has_A_Hat,

I truly feel depressed because of my lack of things. Specifically money. Money is the things.

dudebro,

It’s tough to do this when others derive our self worth from possessions.

Unfortunately, a lot of self-sufficiency quotes fall short when you want other people in your life. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out that way.

Hikermick,

The road to hell is paved with good intentions

dudebro,

I’d say that depends on who you ask.

I’m sure the fascists don’t have good intentions for the necks under their bootheels.
