RizzRustbolt, in greatest movie turnaround

Brotherhood of the Wolf.

meco03211, in Do you interact more in Lemmy?

With reddit having way more people and being only a casual browser, I would never make it early enough to a post to contribute in a meaningful way. Whatever I would have said would be commented dozens of times before I got to the thread. At best my comment wasn’t made yet, but I’d be sure someone with more knowledge on the subject would’ve contributed in greater depth soon.

Here I see plenty of posts hours old with no comments. There’s a greater chance whatever I might say won’t get buried or overshadowed.

Because a lot of stuff is fresh you get a lot less of “This was asked last week, next time use the search bar” kind of stuff too

Funny enough, this question is asked every few days it seems.

Oh yeah but I would rather have this versus condescending Redditers jerking each other off

CrypticCoffee,

Agreed. What you say matters here. Your post won’t be buried with only you for an upvote.

Thorny_Insight, in How long would you live if electricity for the whole world went out permanently?

Way longer than your average person but I’d start running out of supplies after few months too. I have food stocked up for few months, 90 litres of drinking water and a water filter, 120 litres of diesel plus what I have in the tank, enough fuel to run alchohol stove for few months aswell and I have a fireplace to keep myself warm basically indefinitely.

It’s kind of scary to think that even me whose somewhat of a prepper would run out of supplies quite quick. What does that mean for the average person who doesn’t even have a jug of water stored up.

Also, this is the kind of discussion that would fit well on !zombiesurvival

Wrench,

I’ve always wondered. Do you folks just chow on nothing but canned food ands military reasons for a few months straight every couple years when things expire? Or just donate?

Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s good to have emergency supplies. But things expire…

Schmeckinger,

They could just eat them from time to time and replace them with new ones gradually.

Coreidan,

Expired can food doesn’t go bad. Unless the can is budging it’s fine

Thorny_Insight,

I mostly stock up on items I’m using anyways such as rice, beans, noodles, sugar, coffee, crackers, honey, peanut butter etc. and I’m constantly using the oldest packages from my stock and replacing them with fresh ones.

Worx,

What good would your diesel be? The electronics in your car are fried and there’s no point putting it in a generator because there’s nothing to power

Stern,
@Stern@lemmy.world avatar

Depending on tool, electronics might not be an issue. Quads, bikes, mopeds, other two stroke engine type stuff.

Thorny_Insight,

EMP would not affect devices that aren’t connected to the grid. Atleast I don’t think it would, and even if it did, there’s still plenty of older diesel powered machines that don’t need electricity to run such as some diesel heaters. If nothing else I could trade it for something more useful then.

Worx,

The question said all electronics are dead forever. I agree that it’s not a realistic scenario but it is what was asked…

Coreidan,

EMP affects all electronics as long as it’s in line of sight. With that said EMPs are not a very effective way to knock out power for the entire US.

You’d have to launch nukes up into the sky and detonate them in the air in order for an EMP to be effective. You’d need to use several of them spread out across the US.

The chances of that happening are super low unless it’s our own government doing it.

bakachu, (edited ) in What is a good scary/horror movie to watch this month?

Not sure what flavor you’re looking for but here’s some of the ones I enjoyed:

  • Pan’s Labyrinth - fairy tale horror
  • Gretel & Hansel -fairy tale horror
  • Babadook - dramatic horror
  • Mothman Prophecies - dramatic horror
  • Hereditary - dramatic horror
  • The Descent - adventure/action horror
  • Jeepers Creepers - adventure/action horror
  • The Mist - adventure/action horror
  • The Crazies - adventure/action horror
  • 10 Cloverfield Lane - adventure/action horror
  • This is the End - comedy horror
  • Shaun of the Dead - comedy horror
  • Zombieland - comedy horror.

On my Halloween movie list this year I’m planning on watching

  • Little Otik (fairy tale horror with stop motion & live action - looks artsy)
  • Lamb (supernatural horror)
  • Tigers are not Afraid (supposed to be similar to Pan’s Labyrinth)
  • Midnight Meat Train (Clive Barker horror- one of Bradley cooper’s earlier movies)

Saw some other good ones already posted here - Event Horizon, Midsommar - so I think you’ll get a good list.

SHamblingSHapes,

I got in trouble with my mom when she found out I went to Midnight Meat Train. She thought it was a porno. Not sure why she thought the local theater would be playing a porno or why they would let a bunch of high schoolers in 🤷

all-knight-party, in What is a good scary/horror movie to watch this month?
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

Midsommar is one of my favorites, or you could try It Follows if you haven't seen either of those. Midsommar is a slow burn intrigue sort of thing, but quite realistic, most of the most horrifying things about it could happen to you for real.

It Follows is a very creative movie, very much about the fear of being chased by an entity that never stops, extremely interesting premise

PP_BOY_,
@PP_BOY_@lemmy.world avatar

Midsommar is great but I rank it a lot lower on my tier list after watching the original 70s Wicker Man

I feel like Hereditary and Midsommer have similar vibes for some reason even though the plots are not at all similar

all-knight-party,
@all-knight-party@kbin.run avatar

Same director, probably what you're feeling there is a sum of little touches. I liked the first half of Hereditary quite a bit, didn't really like where it ended up, got too fantastical for my tastes, I like pulp horror too, but I really really like horror that's plausible

CorrodedCranium,
@CorrodedCranium@leminal.space avatar

I did not know they shared a director that’s interesting

SHamblingSHapes, in Does noone train their dogs anymore?

A coworker got a German shepherd, insisting she grew up with the breed and knew how to train them and exercise them properly.

She went to a training class where she and her dog theoretically learned “heel”, coworker just didn’t listen. I had the dog on a leash, commanded “heel”, it came right over to my left, and coworker was baffled because she didn’t know her dog would do that.

If my coworker is at all representative of the average dog owner, it’s the owners that need the training.

JustZ, (edited ) in Would you say enthusiast grade or business grade products are better quality?

Business model or commercial model?

Business computing such as word processing and spreadsheets, database software, requires very little processing power. So you’re making an apples to oranges comparison.

For apples to apples, check the specs on pro stuff for yourself: www.amd.com/en/graphics/workstations

The pro stuff is essentially double the processing power, and double the price. The difference is in process threading and number of cores. Rendering huge video and CAD projects, for example, would take forever on a gaming rig, because that kind of rendering software is optimized for threading, game processes are not usually optimized or not as optimized. For example, there are some games that will only use one core of even a dual core processor.

I’m sure someone that knows much more about this stuff will correct any errors in terminology. Anyway, that’s my take on the question.

Initially I thought, well, what graphics processors do they have inside commercial gaming systems, such as a high-end training, flight simulator, or racing simulator. They use the RTX 30 and 40 series.

Generally, hobbyist and consumer grade products are not meant to be used 40 hours a week, such as commercial products are. It’s easy to see huge differences in these sort of products on things like lawn mowers, refrigeration. Even in televisions. Your television in your home is likely not meant to operate 365 days a year like the ones you find in a hotel lobby or airport. They just have higher quality components and engineering, designed to withstand long-term, high volume use. They use better glue.

Bitrot,
@Bitrot@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Those workstation GPUs are also usually not very good for gaming, for the same reasons. Optimized for the professional use case and not the enthusiast one.

@mawkishdave@lemmy.world avatar

When enders game came out there was a big issue about the author of the books bring very homophobic because of his religion. I made a donation for the same price as the tickets to a pro LGBTQ+ org and still went. If your MIL gets snarky just put the donation under her name and put her email in. I would do that the next day so there is no fight and it messes up the kids time.

If you haven’t seen any of the classic late 60s/early 70s horror movies, they are worth checking out. ‘Rosemary’s Baby’, 'The Exorcist, ‘Don’t Look Now’, or ‘The Omen’ are all fantastic.

AA5B, in Does noone train their dogs anymore?

I hold my dog tight to me when anyone is near, but she is very reactive to other dogs. I like to think I have a clue and put in the effort, but we got her as a four year old rescue who had been abused and spent a year in a kennel. There’s only do much you can do: she got rejected from boot camp, and no one wants to risk their pet near a ferocious looking adult animal of her size. This kind of training really has to be done with a puppy, and is much more difficult when someone doesn’t

My town just built a new rail trail near me and I’m kind of sad that I really can’t walk her on it, with the number of dogs already there

tl;dr??

some_guy, in Does noone train their dogs anymore?

I saw a ton of well-behaved pups on a hiking trail this morning. Of those that were off-leash, all were respectful of strangers. Not one misbehaved. Some were on leashes. I assume that some of those could be off-leash without incident. Not one dog behaved poorly.

This is not to say that there aren’t a ton of dumbasses who raise their dogs to have no boundaries. Just shining a light on a bunch of responsible dog-people who were doing a great job.

calypsopub, in What's the most unique role model you've heard that was a green flag?

Keanu

Serially accused of extremely appropriate behavior

EssentialNPC,

Do you have any examples? I ask not to be confrontational, but instead because I have read nothing but kind things about him. Thank you!

amio,

Appropriate behavior. It's a Keanu meme because he's not been accused of a bunch of shit, like way too many high profile actors have.

(Or if this is some other joke, I don't get it. )

EssentialNPC,

Or I am just an idiot and cannot read. Let’s go with that, since it is the truth. Thank you for the kind correction!
