Old_Fat_White_Guy, in What are your best Sleep tips and hacks?

For many years I was getting maybe 2 hours sleep a night. The slightest sound would wake me up and then I’d lay there trying to get back to sleep. Which spiraled into me getting up to pee 3 or 4 times a night. I read about Valerian root being great for helping fall asleep so I tried it with little hope. 2 capsules half an hour before bed. I nodded off easily and woke up a few hours later. 3 straight hours of sleep was unheard-of for me.

Then I added a couple 25mg Benadryl to help me stay asleep or go right back to sleep if something woke me up… like my bladder that was now completely trained to need emptying every one and a half to two hours.

Just prior to Covid I got a cpap. It took me a week before I slept thru the night. Happened again the next week… then a couple nights a week. A few years using my cpap and now most nights I sleep right thru or if I do wake up I can nod right back off. I still use the Valerian root and Benadryl every night but neither of those build up a tolerance.

Word of warning: Actually 2… you will not get “high” on Valerian root and the dreams you have will be in ultra high Def technicolor Sid and Marty Kroft bizarre fun dreams. Actually 3… the Valerian root smells bad. As in 6 week old gym socks marinated in the trunk of your Chevelle during the summer mixed with dog shit. But they help and you only smell it for a second before swallowing.

I also added a sleep eye mask with Bluetooth headphones built in and I listen to positive affirmations blended with mild rain sounds.

So… pills, cpap, headphones mask.

My Saab 05 92x it is a rust bucket. But she is my rust bucket and I’m going to keep her going as long as I can

stoy,

Dad allways had SAABs when I grew up, started with a 9000i -> 9000CSE -> 95 estate -> 95 estate Aero -> 95 estate BioPower

I have allways loved the orange/green color scheme of the dials in the old 9000, also the geneal shape of the dash in the 95 is lovely.

MargotRobbie, in What are some generational differences between millennials and Gen Z ?
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

I think besides having better tech literacy, millennials also tend to be much more cynical about the state of the world. There is only so much you can take of taking the blame for ending the good old days while being called lazy and entitled before you get sick and tired of it all. Hell, you can see that in this very thread of some of us project our own cynicism onto Gen Z.

I don’t see that doomerism we millennials have in most of Gen Z. While we grew up in a world where we resigned to the fact that everything is getting worse, they grew up in a world where things are already terrible, and they think it needs to be fixed, and I have high hopes for them.

And I am so sick and tired of being sick and tired of everything, all the time. So I decided to change.

XbSuper,

I think that will change as they spend more time in the real world. I was full of hope and dreams when I left high school too, but it’s long faded away.

TheLadyAugust,

I’ve definitely caught myself in the doom attitude. But I’ve been waiting for 30 years to for enough reinforcements to fight a winning fight against the boomers and their many terrible ideas. Here they are. Every millennial still able to fight, its back the the trenches. Our allies have the energy to push our fight through the doom, millennials and gen z together.

(And a huge thank you to the few boomers fighting along side us.)

grandkaiser,

There’s no fight. No battle. It’s just people trying to get by day to day. “Boomers” are not a nation, they’re just another way to split up people trying to get by so one group can justify being shitty to another. Rich and powerful people are happy to promote anything that keeps us divided and conquered. Wars have leaders and strategies and clear lines drawn. The “generational war” is just rats fighting over a piece of cheese dropped by the rich and powerful looking for amusement.

phoneymouse,

The only war is class war

@Anarch157a@lemmy.world avatar

There this French fold band, Skáld that usually sings in Old Norse language. In the song Hross, the first line of the chorus is “Hverir eru þeir tveir?”. The way they sing those first two words sounds like “Fevereiro”, which is the Portuguese (my native language) word for February.

solitaire, in What are your best Sleep tips and hacks?
@solitaire@infosec.pub avatar

I need to occupy my mind with something that isn’t related to real life. Not just avoiding topics that are stressful or otherwise emotionally loaded, just thinking about anything I’m going to do or things in my life will stop me sleeping. So I think of stories and fiction worlds until the day dreams become actual dreams.

Since I got into the habit my sleep has gotten far more regular and I have had more control over went it happens.

BOFH666,

Really love the flym reader. Just works, no ads.

Zak,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

Unfortunately, Flym seems to be discontinued (according to its F-Droid entry). Google Play won’t install it on newer versions of Android because it’s built for older versions. I can’t use it for this use case for that reason.

BOFH666,

That’s too bad. And that will be a challenge for me, when I upgrade my current phone.

Zak,
@Zak@lemmy.world avatar

It still installs and runs on Android 13, but Google Play won’t give it to you. I’m going to assume from the username you don’t need instructions.

Usually weep

TheAlbatross, in What are your best Sleep tips and hacks?

Go to bed at the same time every night and create bedtime rituals to tell your body that it’s time to sleep. These can be elaborate as a certain tea and a favorite comfy chair, or simple as washing your face and brushing your teeth, just perform them consistently before getting in bed for about two weeks and your sleep patterns should improve.
