psion1369, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

I play tabletop RPG games, and everybody I’m related to, parents, my brother, aunts and uncles, cousins, all think it’s silly and won’t ever touch a set of dice.

Phanatik, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

All of them.

LetterboxPancake, in What hobby do you have that no one else in your family shares?

Basically anything I enjoy except cooking. They’re not the biggest tech/photography/software/3d printing/… enthusiasts.

Bebo, in What search engine do you recommend that isn't Google or Bing?

I am generally switching between Google and duck duck go on Firefox. When Google gives shitty results (which is frequently) I switch over to ddg.

Devi, in What makes a (good) monarch?

I think it's pretty similar to what makes a good person, empathy, kindness, that sort of stuff.

A lot of the monarchs better thought of are the ones who made social reforms, bettering the lives of others much lower down the totem pole.

Like all people, it's kind of impossible to be all good, so even with the good ones there's awful stuff there, but it's all relative.

(Western concert) flute. Playing, maintenance/repair, collecting, different mechanics and other deviations from the norm, history.

Tea. All teas camellia sinensis/taliensis, and different cultural habits around it. Teapot collecting addiction.

3D modeling and printing.

House/techno DJing - I’ve got decks and about 800 records, but very very rarely have any time to practice as it’s nobody’s cup of tea! Oh well :-)

pruwybn, in What is the point of small instances?
@pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

So who should be in charge of deciding who can have an instance and who can’t?

qaz,

You’re twisting OP’s words. He just wants to discuss the purpose of small instances, he isn’t forcing people to abolish them.

pruwybn,
@pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

I think it’s a valid thing to consider. Due to the nature of the fediverse, there will always be small instances. I guess you could say their purpose is to allow Lemmy to be decentralized.

qaz, (edited )

Small instances don’t prevent Lemmy from being centralized, people don’t mind if their instance defederates from an instance with 5 people. Medium-sized instances (e.g. dbzer0) prevent wrongful defederation, because people will suddenly miss a few communities / users.

JackGreenEarth, in What is your favorite time travel movie or show?

Bebo, in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?

I have been using adguard dns on my phone for years. For the past one year or so also using adblockers on browser (Firefox). Used to watch youtube with ads. Got fed up moved to watching youtube in browser with adblocker, then finally moved to newpipe sponsor block when youtube started adblocker shenanigans. For pc I use cloud flare dns, regular adblockers (Firefox) and keep privacy and security settings on strict.

themurphy, in Do Israeli Politicians' adult children get conscripted just like the average adult Israeli citizen as part of mandatory service?

If your main question is if it leads to more morally correct decisions, then that would be a very hard no.

Most people do believe they are doing the right thing. The Americans are, the Russians are and the Chinese are. They DO believe what they do is correct. Same with religion.

But does that make any of the above groups more correct than the other? The answer is: No, it’s their actions that shows that.

My point is, Israel will always think what they do is morally correct, no matter if it is or not. And when you act in that belief, you can justify almost anything in the world. Because you really think it’s the right thing to do.

cheese_greater,

Mabe morally correct isn’t quite the right notion. Maybe I was more getting at good faith plus worth the potential loss of a beloved member of their family for yhe greater good.

Its very easy to make abstract bloody decisions and send strangers children to war if it never hits close to home so I was playing with that notion as a nexus to getting a better understanding of why Israel would engage in Hydra-busting (West Bank expansion etc) if they were on the hook (in terms of their offsprings lives) for the collateral damage likely to result from such controversial and perilous efforts

QaspR, (edited )

Sounds like what you are trying to articulate is the idea of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_relativism.

Descriptive moral relativism holds only that people do, in fact, disagree fundamentally about what is moral, with no judgment being expressed on the desirability of this.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What makes a (good) monarch?

The same thing that makes any other type of leader or ruler good. Simply seek to understand the people.

mx_smith, in What are some dark sides to cute super-powers ?

Check out the graphic novel series called Chew the characters all have obscure food super powers
