I get a few takeaways from this, one of these being that progress, people foresee (or think they foresee), will turn out to be a merely forward thing, where we can only get better at inventing, which means better tech, which means the ability to improve how we destroy, and another being that nation states, themselves having been a can of worms on their own when tribes contemplated no longer being tribes, will be targeting other nation-states, but that tribes, being nomadic and not as technologically in-tune, would have less incentive to be struck down by a nuke, as would city-states to a lesser degree due to the second thing and/or the fact that everyone existing in the form of city-states might make people more careful.
SO & myself tested positive for COVID. Kids did not. Kids went to family Christmas, while we are quarantined in our bedroom for 5 days. Pretty shitty overall.
9/11 was a huge boost for the military suppliers, housing crisis got some financial institutions very rich for betting on the collapse. COVID mostly made medical suppliers rich, but also boosted weapons sales (more policing, border control…).
Usually it’s pretty easy to see, you just have to look for the interests. Also you can look at the laws and decisions that get passed after these events. Something like a plane crash or titanic sinking is more difficult. But you can usually say that people got rich before that happened and that’s usually one of the reasons it’s happening in the first place.
A fun and informative podcast for such information is “well there’s your problem” which talks about engineering disasters and the aftermath (it’s also very funny)
But just saying: I said the greed is a factor, not the only thing causing a disaster. But usually you’ll find someone has cut corners, didn’t do maintenance, didn’t follow regulations, didn’t employ enough people…
It provides a safety net by pooling the resources of the community to support the less fortunate. This prevents people from having to sacrifice their long term goals because their short term needs may not be otherwise met.
Also in contrast to capitalism that treats society as a zero sum game (“I can’t get ahead unless I take something from someone else”) socialism is a benefit multiplier (“I’m part of the community. By making the life of everyone in the community better I’m also improving my own life”).
