jjjalljs, in What do you like about liberalism, capitalism and conservatism?

Does conservatism mean “preserve the way things are”? Things are bad. Things are really bad for a lot of people. Trying to preserve things in such a state is difficult to justify.

Is it “outgroups to bind, in groups to defend”? Well that’s obviously a bad framework.

Some of the subreddits I follow are related to emulation and piracy which has caused some subreddits to get banned or at least take action to limit legal threats. When the Reddit blackout happened a lot of them went down and said they were shifting here. I find they’re a little more open to discussion than other places that just copy and paste some old post or refer you to a Wiki

I see you’re buying into the corporate propaganda. Guess who paid for “studies” to clear power companies from liability.

Here are a few of the conclusions from studies that have discovered a strong link between proximity to power lines and health problems:

Cancer: Exposure to power lines has been connected to cancer. Brain cancer is the most common type, but associations with breast cancer and leukemia have also been claimed;

Tumors: Some studies have shown associations between brain and other cancerous tumors and exposure to power lines.

Miscarriages;

Increased susceptibility to illnesses such as cancer;

Depression;

Electric shock;

Electrocution.

You live in a house that is lined with electrical wires but for some reason they are not an issue to you because no one has told you to be scared of them.

Do you always change the subject when you don't win an argument with the talking points you read online?

afraid_of_zombies,

Changing the subject.

CosmicApe,
@CosmicApe@kbin.social avatar

I mean, there's a bit of a difference between the 240/120 going through your house and the 100s of KV going through transmission lines

afraid_of_zombies,

Power lines are more visible in areas with greater poverty, and poverty are risk factors for things like leukemia and miscarriages and depression. No animal trial has shown a link between the type of emissions that power lines give off and any medical issues. Additionally no one has been able to even demonstrate any possible mechanism for action.

But hey go ahead and prove me wrong. Get some rats and do a controlled study.

You're the one making the assertion: Back it up with evidence.

Bluetreefrog,

To be fair, you should probably back claims like these up with some references. Google scholar has a few.

No one online is going to change their beliefs no matter how many references are provided.

misanthropy, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?

My crippling depression and anxiety, same as every year. I drove hours to my father’s, only to turn round 10 minutes away.

douglasg14b, in So, who or what ruined Christmas this year?
@douglasg14b@lemmy.world avatar

Stress and burnout killing my ability to sleep. I was barely functional despite being in bed for nearly 12 hours. I can’t even remember what I got my family or what they got me :(

Other than that, it went reasonably well.

Poggervania, in What brand/model of pants can you recommend?
@Poggervania@kbin.social avatar

Easy answer OP: none.

Don’t wear pants, let your legs breathe freely.

Gabadabs, in What do you like about liberalism, capitalism and conservatism?
@Gabadabs@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure what there is to like, honestly. Capitalism has done an excellent job at making sure that we have homeless and hungry people, despite having more homes than homeless people, and we throw away enough food to feed all of them too. conservative values led to suburban america, which is such an incredible failure in every single way. You can't walk practically anywhere, we don't design infrastructure for pedestrians, and we build anti-homeless architecture anywhere that we do happen to have areas people can take shelter from the elements or sit down in public (because having homeless people visible is bad for business!). You have to pay money to just exist anywhere. I'm fucking tired of it. It inconveniences those of us who have homes, and just want to be able to socialize in public places, and makes existence HELL for those of us without homes.
Liberalism, at best, wants to maintain the status quo, and is never willing to push for change fast enough to stop people from slipping through the cracks. Roe VS Wade was, quite literally, abolished while we had a liberal president. Biden is still funding Israel's genocide.
Capitalism calls for infinite growth in order to please investors... which will stop eventually. Whether we want it to or not. They'll just destroy the planet even more than they already before they get to that point. There's not infinite resources, and the damage we've done to our planet because of industrialization and capitalism is irreversible.
So yeah.
Fuck liberalism, capitalism, and conservatism.

I can’t count on my fingers how many times I’ve seen that fucking movie reprise on television. Way too overplayed that it ruined the film series for me.
