yum_burnt_toast, (edited ) in Lets start a new Lemmy holiday tradition. What's a song you've been digging lately?
@yum_burnt_toast@reddthat.com avatar

ive made a fallout style playlist and my daughter has been loving these songs:

fairley holden - papas getting old

charlene arthur - just look, dont touch, hes mine

boswell sisters - everybody loves my baby

MadBabs, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?

I don’t do resolutions, but i make a list of things I’d like to do in that year. Some are actually trackable (read 30 books) some are a bit more ambiguous (move my body more), most end up getting done by the time the year ends. It’s nice.

deadbeef79000, (edited ) in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

Happens occasionally when I’m walking my dog.

My dog will let the other one know when she’s had enough nonsense.

IMHO find a way to get over it and get over it.

demystify, in Do Israeli Politicians' adult children get conscripted just like the average adult Israeli citizen as part of mandatory service?

In theory. In practice, I doubt it.

The Israeli parliament consists of 120 politicians. Their children would need:

  • to not be Haredi, which are exempt from service
  • to be between the ages of 18-21, which is when their mandatory service runs
  • to serve in combat units

Chances are only a few of them answer this criteria (even less considering the extremist portion of this specific government which didn’t serve, and their children likely don’t serve either), and even they are likely not above pulling strings to get them out of danger. Except for that politician you talked about, apparently.

cheese_greater, (edited )

That is absolute bullshit about the Heredi. Its like, ok you can live in this unlrotected/untaxed area and be self-governing. Best of luck, let the Lord ur God fight off your/his enemies 🙄

They are gonna have to form their own army and I suspect they’re way to freaking soft and parasitic to be able to do so unilaterally or even on Easy mode

Edit: do they at least pay taxes or are they basically a completely mooching cancer on Israeli society that just fucks and prays and creates sewage they dont bear the cost of?

kryllic, (edited ) in Lets start a new Lemmy holiday tradition. What's a song you've been digging lately?
@kryllic@programming.dev avatar

Dragon Bump by Desert Planet. It’s been a serious earworm the last couple of weeks for me lol

Grimy, in How can I "watch" a post?

I guess it might depend on your app. Jerboa has a bookmark that saves the post. It doesn’t notify but it’s easy to find it again.

Mac,

Thunder has a save option.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

The save option is app-independent. Saved posts are saved on the server. So unless an app doesn’t have a button for it they should all support them.

Green Belt

Everythingispenguins,

Isn’t that sort of the opposite of a green belt?

JakoJakoJako13,
@JakoJakoJako13@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know. That’s just what everybody in my neighborhood calls it.

Hot Mulligan - John “The Rock” Cena, Can You Smell What The Undertaker

Whole album is so good. I didn’t think I’d ever like screamy music but it is not overdone.

RedStrider, in best app for lemmy?
@RedStrider@lemmy.world avatar

connect isn’t foss but it’s very well working

Gamers_Mate, (edited ) in What is the point of small instances?

1: Even big instances start out small.
2: Also having other instances besides the big ones helps prevent a monopoly over the fediverse.
3: Bigger isn't always better. Nothing wrong with a small Cozy community.

gicagaf805,

There is no monopoly if you have a dozen big instances. But if you have 1000 instances? What is the point. Can’t start a community there without it going poof the next week.

Gamers_Mate,

That is always a risk for small instances.
It is the same for small businesses or libraries/museums funded by donations.
Imo just because there is a risk does not mean they shouldn't do it.

otter, (edited )

The core issue here is instances disappearing, and That goes into the discussion of the structure of the fediverse right now vs. the fediverse in the future

A dozen big instances feel better now, and I personally wouldn’t make a community on a smaller instance unless I know it is likely to stay up. If it was run by an existing organization for example.

Long term though, I trust existing organizations to set up stable instances that won’t be shut down easily. If a government, school, game company etc. makes an instance it’s not likely to go down. Having lots of instances will look more normal then.

Ultimately we don’t need to do anything differently, I recommend new people join a big instance and then make a new account once they know what instance they like.

note to everyone: please don’t downvote good faith questions

OP asked a pretty reasonable open ended question. There are other people who may be thinking the same, and reading the discussions here might change their minds. Save downvoting for rule breaking / content that’s bad for the community

Would be nice to be able to backup your magazine/community, so if for example random.lemmy goes down, you can still migrate your /mini4wd elsewhere. Don't know how it could be implemented though, I'm still in the "i get it but not really" phase with the Fediverse.

Papanca,

I agree and basically, it’s not a bug, it’s a feature

papabobolious, in What phone do you sugest for your grandparents?

Doro makes phones specifically for seniors. They’re okay but still a bit complex for some

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

My father-in-law had one. It was awful. It made it so much harder for us to help him with issues. And apart from the system apps everything he got didn’t fit into how everything else worked. He was much better off with a regular Android he got later.

papabobolious,

It worked okay for mine compared to othe solutions but in general trying to teach seniors touch interfaces has been a bit of a nightmare.

Really_long_toes, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

Clonk rage was a game that I wished got a new one, it was basically lemmings x worms x teraria where you would gather resources and avoid danger while trying to kill all your opponents clonks… so many memories of playing it multiplayer… it got open sourced a while ago, (open clonk) if your interested

Phlogiston, (edited ) in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

My in-laws are in Arizona where there are scorpions. I’m giving them a powerful blacklight flashlight so we can go look for them when it gets dark out.

catsdoingcatstuff,

Wow, I had no idea they glow under black light. That’s a cool gift!

marduk,

They are also great for spotting certain mushrooms/lichens! Try pointing it at a tree to see the blotches of natural sunscreen growing on them

AtmaJnana,

Be aware that powerful UV flashlights (especially the no-name Chinese ones) can also damage your eyes quickly without you noticing. Better ones will come with protective glasses.

Guest_User,

To be clear UV flashlights are NOT the same as blacklight flashlights. However I totally agree if you are getting a UV light source for some reason, eye and possibly skin protection is a fantastic idea

AtmaJnana, (edited )

I mean, black light (aka wood’s light when fitted with a special filter) is UV-A. Hence it is important to educate people.
