krellor, in What phone do you sugest for your grandparents?

My advice is a little different than others. I recently got my in-laws outfitted with smartphones and a new nuc. My father in-law has Parkinson's, slow onset, but it means he is clumsy. It's not likely that his phone will survive shaky hands for 8 years. What I did was buy refurbished OnePlus phones, install a simple launcher, install Bitdefender, and then add a lock app that let's me add a pin to the system settings app and the play store.

They can't install anything out change things. They can browse, play games I preload, take pictures, etc, but I don't have to worry about them installing things they shouldn't. If one of the phone dies I'll just get the latest affordable refurbished of the same line and configure it the same way.

I had originally tried without locking the phone down as much but my father in law could not stop installing spammy weather apps and clicking ads on games and following there instructions.

I also created new Google accounts for them that I manage, so they can't get stuff stolen with bad account management practice.

If you are in the US, I've also found mint to be a good deal for cell service.

yea i would skip all smartphones. i got them an ipad. my parents are i their 80. there was no way failing eyesight and hand coordination can handle a tiny smartphone screen. Also skip android. Android has truly shitty touch interface responsiveness compared to Apple devices. Apple has the world's best natural touch responsiveness. This is the main reason Apple is wooping Android ass. Dont waste money on smartphones for elderly. Only Ipads have a chance of working.

in fact for my mum, i was inclined to skip all touch devices. as a lady she has long fingernails. with arthritis making her fingers more crooked, there was no way for her to use a touchscreen. her fingernails would always tap the screen first. even if she trimmed her nails, her nails would touch first and the touch interface would fail. so i obtained a push button phone for her, old vintage desktop style.

Perfide,

Apple shill detected.

Spotted the Apple advertisement. I don't think gettin an overpriced piece of hardware to clumsy hands over a supposed "touch superiority" is a good idea.

Sequence5666, in What phone do you sugest for your grandparents?

iPhone 6s PLUS. Increase the font and screen size. Samsung A Galaxy

Hobart_the_GoKart,

I got my 70 y/o mom a Samsung A Galaxy and she absolutely loves it. She need some coaching sometimes, but I’m always surprised with what she can do with it.

IWantToFuckSpez,

iOS nowadays has great accessibility features. You can replace the entire home screen with a couple of giant icons. https://9to5mac.com/2022/11/08/ios-16-2-custom-accessibility-mode/

Thadden, in Lets start a new Lemmy holiday tradition. What's a song you've been digging lately?

A donde, by Cetu Javu.

A pretty catchy 80’s synth-pop song, in Spanish, by a German band.

UnculturedSwine, in People who have made and successfully kept their New Year's resolution, what was it and how did you stay motivated?

Keeping to a resolution requires resolve which is an emotion. You need to introspect and make sure that the resolution that you have chosen is consistent with the price you are willing to pay whether it is monetary or a personal desire. Prepare yourself for the cost. It’s easy to say you’re going to give up alcohol but your mind is going to try to sabotage you every step of the way. Keep your goals to yourself and meditate on them. Take some time out of your day to cultivate the feeling of resolve within you. Literally just remember the feeling you have when you have felt determined to finish something and cultivate that feeling. It’s a fire that burns within you that can become stronger if you feed it. Finally, don’t get discouraged when you fail. You will likely fail a lot but that doesn’t mean you should give up. Keep to your resolution even if you keep tripping up.

Hobbes, in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

The best gift ever is that my family all agreed not to buy unneeded things for each other. The gift of not stressing, not having to go shopping, and not spending money just keeps on giving.

meliaesc,

I love shopping for others…

Lagoon5209,

Do my shopping?

meliaesc,

Genuinely, I’d love to.

themeatbridge,

We have a secret santa where the rule is the gift has to be unneeded. We are all adults with jobs who can buy ourselves things we need. The best gifts are things people want but wouldn’t buy for themselves. If it’s not frivolous, it’s something they probably will get themselves.

kubica, in Why does America say 'merry christmas'?

But you are hoping for the best for someone else. Better wish them to be merry than just happy then?

To hike more than the previous year

I got quite a bit more than last year, literally hiked through my shoes. Well more that I put the final touches on hiking through my shoes. I got about 500 miles of dedicated hiking done this year. I’m hoping to do more this year but I’m going to include morning walks as a part of that number.

I hike to be free from the chaos of life (and my memories) and this year was a doozy. So the external factors pushed me to hike more and honestly I think it was a boon on my mental health.

Being out in nature is so pleasant on my mind and allows me to truly be me.

10/10 would watch the clouds float by all day again

whenigrowup356, in Why does America say 'merry christmas'?

Insofar as there’s a distinction between the two, I feel like you’ve got it switched. Merriment would be a night out with drinks and friends, whereas deep happiness would be more like contentedness with your life choices. But they’re about the same. Plus “A Christmas Carol” uses Merry, and it’s like the ultimate Christmas story.

moon, in Lets start a new Lemmy holiday tradition. What's a song you've been digging lately?

Dark Times - The Weeknd/Ed Sheeran. No idea why this song didn’t blow up years ago!

Fly Down - Stephen. Love this guy.

Well… Anything a generation old for price and not flag ship. Samsung A-something or Google something-a. You can change the screen dpi to make thing more readable.

You can install a custom launcher to have full control over the home screen and just show the important apps like call, text and email. I use pre sale Nova.

Most custom launchers let you lock the home screen too, something I learnt was important for my mother who would CONSTANTLY drag stuff around, get lost and then claim she didn’t go anything.

CONSTANTLY drag stuff around, get lost and then claim she didn’t go anything

Nothing is quite as relatable to me as this. Do they genuinely not realize? Are they too proud to admit they did something? I will never know

Tautvydaxx,

Thanks for sugesting about draging stuff on the screen lock

Orange Blossoms by Goldford

Sleep Deprivation by Chance Peña

Discovered them last week and I’ve had them in my rotation since.

Apytele, in What are your best flight tips and tricks?

I’ve traveled with my intellectually disabled sister before. If you’re traveling with anyone with a major disability of any kind but similar severity, I highly recommend you pack disposable gloves and wet wipes, and possibly a small emergency snack (especially if they have diabetes, my sister will just beat the shit out of you if she gets too hungry, some people might die or some shit).

Nemo, in If you could only listen to someone talk about one topic for the rest of your life, what would it be, and why?

Ethics. It touches on every other subject.
