I’m a penguin who was captured by human researches in Antarctica, but I was able to escape and then I got in touch with my penguin friends and leaders to raid the researchers facilities. Now the human facilities are under Penguin control, so we can use humans communication media like the Internet. Anything more you are interested in?
It was very hard at first, we used to slap many times and hard enough touchscreens, but this turned out to be unreliable. Then, we developed special penguin gloves that heat themselves so we can use touchscreen almost seamlessly.
When traveling to/from eastern Europe, always have your checked-in luggage wrapped. In those countries, especially in Hungary, there are many thieves among luggage handlers and there are many horror stories regarding in what conditions the passengers received their belongings at the end (if at all). While you cannot 100% eliminate risks, wrapped luggages are much less likely to be tampered with. It’s also worth wrapping it when you care about the outer texture of your luggage (sometimes the cargo area of the aircraft is really dirty).
In the terminal building, find your gate first, so that you know exactly where to go when the time comes. Until then, go, find a comfortable seat somewhere else, far from the gates. At DXB I know a couple of cool locations where there aren’t many people waiting, so there are plenty of free space plus much cleaner toilets nearby due to less frequent usage. However, I’ll keep that information to myself, because I still wanna be able to enjoy those less crowded areas when I’m traveling.
Pay attention to the safety briefing and really think it through. You have to remember it in panic situations. Pay attention to every single little detail, because everything is said for a very good reason. (Just as an example: when they say “pull the oxygen mask towards you when it appears in front of you”, you really have to yank on it (okay, maybe don’t rip it off; I have no idea how strong to pull it), because the oxygen flow starts only when a safety “pin” is released, which can be done by pulling on the oxygen line.)
If your clothes are in your checked-in luggage, always have at least one set of extra clothes in your hand-carry.
Pay attention to the airline’s guidelines when packing your luggage.
During an emergency evacuation do not reach for your belongings. Just do as instructed and leave the aircraft as you’re told, ASAP. For this reason, keep your passport in your pocket and try to wear clothing that will be suitable outside as well to some extent. For example, wear your shoes and wear a sweater at least. (And pants as well, but I guess it doesn’t need to be mentioned.) You will get your belongings back at the end (if they’re salvageable, I guess).
Others already mentioned it, but it’s so important, I need to reiterate: don’t be an asshole. It is common sense, yet there are so many people not following this rule.
The song goes “We wish you a merry Christmas”, so that’ll always be there for as long as the song is popular.
Plus (also because of the song, I assume), you say “merry Christmas and a happy new year”, not “happy Christmas and a happy new year”. Too much happy there.
Animal behavior. I never get bored learning about biology and specifically, all the interesting behaviors that animals have learned to reach their goals. Like elaborate mating dances, or long distance communication of whales.
The foss apps I dont agree with but a stock grapheneos setup is as basic as it gets so even a non tech person can use it. OP can even set it up for them to auto update whatever apps they use through the playstore so the grandparents dont really have to do anything
it is basic but you rum into compatibility issues every once in a while which they will not be able to figure out. And also, if you don’t agree with the Foss apps, it means you will just install the regular familiar google apps, which if you do that, does not make much of a difference if you are on GOS or stock Android
I see where you are coming from but I disagree. Using grapheneos will allow much more security and control over the device so OP can fine tune their grandparent’s device to their liking. As for not agreeing with the foss apps I really mean in this situation specifically. Foss apps often run into problems with stability (look at newpipe due to youtube) and ease of use (look at collabora) which will frustrate an older person and with grapheneos at least OP can further lockdown the proprietary apps that their grandparents would use if they do so in the first place. However, since OP stated they just want a phone that’s simple that’s why I would go with the stock grapheneos setup without adding new applications. As for compatiability, unless they are driving or banking which I doubt since they just know tha basics of a smartphone, I doubt this will be a problem since the majority of mainstream apps work. Grapheneos is meant for freedom and securiry over your device not just privacy
The problem is that other people will be unfamiliar with it. Unless OP can be the support person all the time, the grandparents may want to get help from someone else.
Keeping things stock is helpful for that, and I feel like Google Pixel is already simple enough. Just disable things like assistant during setup or in settings.
I agree to disagree it’s really not that different from vanilla especially if he does go the playstore route, so a person familiar with android can naviagate grapheneos. The only problem would be if they break their device and the thumbprint scanner would have to be recalibrated. Personally I would just keep it as the stock grapheneos setup with accessibility features turned to max. That way its a dumb smartphone
Edit: forgot to mention regardless of os add some kind of network firewall or DNS solution to block malicious/phishing domains. The elderly are often victims of scams
the same aurora store that wouldnt work for half the times and you would have to go to the google play website for an application and click on “open in app” on ur browser?
woah! you really look like the half empty glass type of person. That’s why their grandson/daugther it’s going to set it up for them. I’ve been using AuroraStore for a long time and I never had to do any of that. Still, once you have installed the apps you need, correctly, the only concurrent task is to apply updates and I never had any problems with that either.
Automatic response. Nobody that I am close with is actually happy (or even fine), but when staff asks you in greeting if you’re having a good day and did you find everything okay, you know they are bullshitting the “I’m doing well, and yes, thanks”. Same sort of automatic bullshit response.
We are living paycheck to paycheck (some not even that), with slowly rising levels of debt, in dead-end jobs while the earth slowly boils us and rich fucks get richer. In tight-knit circles, suicide is often discussed openly and often, and death is welcomed. My best friend recently told me that (if they die before me, as if lol) when I attend the funeral, if anyone suggests that they had a happy life, I am to punch that person in the face, without hesitation.
Life is pain. But it’s so much quicker to fake that your existence isn’t hell, so lying to people in ways that doesn’t matter is way easier.
