punkwalrus, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

“Mail Order Monsters,” which came out in the 8-bit era (mine was C64). Basically, you started out with a “base monster,” like plant, insect, reptile, etc. Then you battled someone else’s. The winner got some money, which could be used to upgrade your monster with abilities, extra limbs, and so on. You could save your monster on a floppy disk and battle on someone else’s system.

My love affair ended when a friend figured out how to hack that data file on the floppy and make an invincible monster

ArtVandelay, (edited ) in Former religious lemmings, what made you quit religion or stop being a believer?

“God created the universe”

“And how do we know God exists?”

“It’s in the Bible”

“And who wrote the Bible?”

“God”

The circular reasoning is what really showed me that it was all bullshit and merely a means of control

God sends a Prophet to start a religion. The devil follows right behind to organize it.

amzd, in What are the best e-readers on the market?

IMO the one you already have. I use my phones Books app. It can read epubs and you can buy books in the store too. Also has settings for different colors, I really like the white on black dark mode theme.

Kage520,

Eink is so much nicer to stare at long term though

DudeDudenson, in What are some productive things to do when you wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep for a few hours?

Watching tool restoration videos used to cut my insomnia significantly, usually after one half an hour video I’d have a hard time keeping my eyes open.

Truth is I stopped having insomnia when I left the call center and turned my life around, so the real advice here is get help because it’s most likely a psychological thing

Laying in bed while watching a long no-commentary video would probably work wonders.

The scene from Honey I Shrunk the Kids where they find the giant oreo is still something I want to experience for myself

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Fwiw, the recipe for the white stuff in an Oreo is just shortening and powdered sugar.

Make some of that, and a batch of chocolate cookies, and live your best life.

And if you’re into videogames, buy Grounded - HEAVILY inspired by Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and also just an overall really well made and fun game.

mangosloth,

Beware of spiders though

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t think shortening is Kosher, and Oreos have changed their recipe to be fully Kosher.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, I’m sure the official recipe has a whole laboratory worth of goodies in it - but the one you can make in your own kitchen: shortening to volume, powdered sugar to taste/texture.

chunkystyles,

I thought it was an oatmeal cream pie, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen that movie.

I played the heck out of TankPot back in the day. One of the best early games to have a high number of simultaneous multi-player, I think 64, split poverty 4 teams of tanks. Played through the browser, it moved around to different sites a few times over the years and now has its own dedicated site:

Anticorp, in What are the best e-readers on the market?

Kindle is annoying if you want to move your books around and the author didn’t release them without DRM like the awesome Brandon Sanderson does. There used to be a crack using Calibre, but that didn’t work last time I tried it, because Amazon keeps changing the format to prevent people from being able to control their own content. It sucks.

I have the Oasis and the form factor is pretty good. Not as good as the older Nook was, but okay. The old Nook had a really good form factor, tactile rubber, and was very lightweight. They released a new Nook a couple of years ago that was pretty close, but it’s gone again last time I checked. I had the Kindle Voyager before the Oasis and it’s okay. The Paper White is pretty good, but I want physical buttons, and a large edge to hang onto so that I don’t accidentally change pages by touching the screen.

The Kindle store is nice because they have pretty much everything, but it’s kind of expensive. Recently my Kindle started updating the store every single time I open it, which is very annoying. There doesn’t seem to be an option to disable the automatically update.

Text selection on the Kindle is great! I play around with the Nook whenever I go to Barnes and Noble and it’s not as good. On the Kindle you can hold one word, then tap another word somewhere else, and it’ll highlight everything in-between and the two words you touch.

I’ve looked into Kobo a couple of times when frustrated that I couldn’t move a book to a non-kindle device, but they’re pretty expensive. My Oasis was also expensive, but it still works, so I’ll probably stick with that until it stops working.

Best of luck! eBooks are awesome and I greatly prefer them to real books now.

Boozilla,
@Boozilla@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve had an Oasis since 2017 and I generally like it. I am not crazy about all my e-books being hosted in the Amazon cloud. But I made that bed over a decade ago, and will have to lie in it. I do love the convenience of e-books, too.

One thing that annoys me about Kindle is that if it can’t connect to the Amazon cloud for some reason, it will burn through the battery pretty quickly as it desperately tries to connect over and over again. This is an issue in my house, because my WiFi is filtered by a Pi Hole. So I end up leaving my Oasis in Airplane Mode most of the time. The battery lasts a lot longer that way. When I want to sync or download a new e-book, I just take it out of Airplane Mode for a couple of minutes.

Anticorp,

I guess it is trying to connect to sync your read progress. That’s another benefit that I forgot to mention. You can read on your Kindle, and then if you’re on the bus or something, you can read on your Kindle app on your phone and pick up right where you left off.

Donebrach, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?
@Donebrach@lemmy.world avatar

No idea what the movie’s actual title was but there is a wonderfully poorly dubbed kung fu movie by the American title “Shaolin V Ninja”

The voices are terrible, sometimes the characters answer their own questions, music is stolen from Star Trek II at points and it features probably the best “I’ve been stabbed” sound in cinematic history at about 1 hour, 13 minutes. Highly recommend. youtu.be/h6iYROUoHUE?si=6h7DzxRMD6x4YSLl

Also it’s that specific dub, there seems to be a more shared version on youtube that is better translated (and not as stupid).

RBWells, in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

Is it guaranteed? I’d much rather lift everyone up to at least my standard of living, than squash everyone down to the lowest common denominator. But if you told me every family on earth could have what we do if I alone lived on the street, begging from them for the rest of my life, sure, I’d do it

otp, in Why do people not understand that you can agree with one thing someone said or did while disagreeing with the majority of what they stand for?

If a shitbag says the sky is blue, you don’t need to say “Hey, the shitbag was right about the sky being blue”. You can just say “The sky is blue”.

These types of shitbags take advantage of psychological techniques to gain followers. Getting people to agree with them is a sort of a “foot-in-the-door” technique.

The moment you say “I don’t agree with everything Jordan Peterson says, but…”, he’s got his foot in your door in turning you into a supporter.

“But I’m smarter than that,” you say. “I’m just an independent thinker who can separate the argument from the individual”. Jordan Peterson has a PhD in psychology, and has made his living off of manipulating people. He’s better equipped than you. And as you may know, thinking “it won’t/can’t happen to me” makes you more likely to become a victim.

Other phrases these guys love to hear people say are things like…

“I don’t agree with him, but I like to listen to arguments from people that I disagree with.”

“I know he’s making shit up, but he’s just funny. I listen just to laugh at him.”

“He’s absolutely wrong, but he makes people so angry. I listen to see what people are raging about.”

These are all foot-in-the-door scenarios. And that’s how they make their eventual “sale”.

There was a game from my childhood for the Dreamcast called E.G.G. (Elemental Gimmick Gear). I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it, but I remember it being super cool

Everyone knows Oregon trail and Amazon trail, but I don’t see Yukon trail mentioned as much. Similar game but up the coast of Canada.

Also we had a game called Power Pete that came with this old powermac we had.

And a game called Stay Tooned! Where you get sucked into a cartoon hotel. Each room had cool puzzles and you had to escape
