ApostleO, in What do you think is the coolest designed sci-fi gun?

I want to toss the Type-2 phaser from Star Trek (circa 24th century) as my personal favorite. It has this design which reads as a tool more than a weapon, which I love.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

I prefer the retro aesthetics of the TOS Type 1, especially for the integrated Type 1, but regardless, it’s an excellent choice for the reason you state: it’s a very versatile tool!

ApostleO, (edited )

You said Type-1 (the compact, key fob looking TOS phaser), but linked a picture to the TOS Type-2 (the pistol). Which did you prefer?

I love the concept of the Type-1, and it would definitely be my favorite pick of the phasers based on function. But for how it looks, I like how the TNG Type-2 kinda blended the TOS Type-1 concept as a tool, but sized it up to the TOS Type-2 pistol in size. Best of both worlds. Still feels like a tool, but more power drill, less garage door opener or handgun.

EDIT: my autocorrect kept messing up the link.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

Yah, editing typo. I meant the TOS Type 2, which had a removable Type 1 in it.

ApostleO,

Oh, cool. I never knew about that. Thanks.

sxan,
@sxan@midwest.social avatar

It always bugs me a bit that all ST handgun-like phasers are “Type 2”, regardless of which design. I get what they’re doing, it’s just confusing. There are more than one TOS Type 2 designs, and obv. TOS Type 2 are radically different from TNG Type 2, of which there were several variations. The toxonomist in me wishes they’d been given at least sub-types; as it is, they’re categorized by (in-universe) date of introduction. But the shows and props department were sort of all over with them, making tweaks between seasons, so it can be rough to talk about without having memory-alpha up in a window.

De_Narm, in What prevents you from going to bed early?

I’ve studied for years and got a well paying job, I cannot just switch to something else without cutting my pay in half. But my work isn’t enjoyable, it outright sucks on most days. Going to bed early surrenders the only time of the day I can be happy and skips right to work again.

le_saucisson_masquay,

You’re putting money above happiness and wellbeing ?

De_Narm,

What do you think I finance my happiness and wellbeing with? Having more ‘fun’ at work does not offset the new problems like worrying about rent or food. There is no happy middleground really, I mostly enjoy things that do not pay at all.

le_saucisson_masquay,

Sure we need money, but I personally always take a job that pay less but is fulfilling over a well paid one that makes me stressful / sad. At the end we spend most of the day working, it’s a matter of health.

Surp, (edited ) in What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?
@Surp@lemmy.world avatar

Probably nothing. Mexican citizens will have to rise up and it won’t be without loss. It will legit be civil war. You can’t stop people from wanting drugs.

BobGnarley,

You could regulate the market for that demand that will never go away though. Legalize drugs and prostitution, problem 80% solved

Mathazzar,

The cartel is probably far beyond drugs and prostitution only these days. Arms trafficking, human trafficking, etc would remain largely viable methods of funding.

And the cartels are smart enough that they’d just shift pipelines and continue to be a large issue.

DingoBilly, (edited ) in What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?

Can’t believe noone has mentioned the hot beverage vending machines.

Its so fucking nice to spend $1-$1.50 and just get some hot tea or coffee right there without issue. And they’re everywhere so you can pretty much rely on them.

So much more convenient than having to go to a coffee shop so you can pay $5 for the same thing, and the vending machine version still tastes great.

lazynooblet,
@lazynooblet@lazysoci.al avatar

It’s likely not as cool as Japanese vending coffee, but in the UK there are Starbucks/Costa etc vending machines all over. Do Americans (sorry assuming you are from US) not have those?

DingoBilly,

Australia here, nothing similar here.

But this is like basically every street has a set of these vending machines. They’re everywhere.

daddybutter,

Have used a couple of hot coffee vending machines in the US and all of them were absolute garbage.

Facebones,

I don’t mind vending machine cappuccino but that’s only like half credit as coffee lol

SOB_Van_Owen,

The Tick: Armless bandit… Empty your bladder of that bitter black urine men call coffee! It has its price and its price has been paid!

shea,

the ones at racetrac are pretty great imo. i get the lightest roast they have (more caffeine) and dump a bunch of sugar and cream into it but it’s pretty good black, too

egitalian,

No, not that I’ve seen except for at highway rest stops. They have automated coffee vending machines that sells some brown nasty tasting water. Definitely not coffee

AceFuzzLord,

As someone from the west coast of The States, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a hot drink vending machine in real life. At least not here where I live.

CosmicCleric, (edited )

As someone from the west coast of The States, I can’t say I’ve ever seen a hot drink vending machine in real life. At least not here where I live.

We used to have them, but I haven’t seen them for over a decade now.

If you remember the Terminator 2 movie, the scene where a security guard gets a cup of coffee, those are the kind of dispensers that used to exist.

(The link above shows the scene I’m speaking of. I tried to embed the URL into this comment so the picture itself would display, but I couldn’t figure it out.)

tocopherol,
@tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Also from the US west, I’ve seen a bunch of hot vending machines! In several hospitals and schools in different states, a few gas stations. They will have coffee, tea or cocoa selections, a cup pops out and gets filled with fresh brewed coffee. They were usually around 1.50 to 2 dollars a cup, maybe more expensive now though.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

Ditto. Also rest stops.

DillyDaily, (edited )

But are those like a hot coffee dispenser, where you grab a cup and put it under a spout, push a button and it pours out a hot drink? Because we do have those in Australia.

But in Japan they have vending machines for canned drinks and cans of soup that are heated.

spez_,

I’d steal from them

PraiseTheSoup,

This comment made me remember that the tech school in my (US) hometown of ~4000 people had a machine like this roughly 20 years ago and I’ve never seen another one since.

mrcleanup,

My college had a french fry vending machine. That was pretty awesome.

hark,
@hark@lemmy.world avatar

I had one at my old workplace and it certainly served me better coffee than the mud I could get from the mcdonalds across the road.

CancerMancer, (edited )

I used to see these more often in Canada but now they’re pretty unusual. Not heated cans like some Japanese machines, just cups of coffee and sometimes lattes and shit.

Now you’re forced to pay $3+ for muddy garbage at Tim’s/McDonalds and you have to wait in line to get it too. Alternatively drop $7+ at Starbucks for ok coffee? I can make better tasting coffee with a drip machine, let alone my French press.

MossyFeathers,

I’ve seen these around in the US, but they seem to be getting rarer for some reason.

Katana314,

They also have much more popularized versions of canned coffee than us; I occasionally see bad overpriced Starbucks coffee bottles in grocery store checkouts, but not something small, quick, and convenient like BOSS.

kyle,

Can you get sugar or cream or do you have to drink the coffee black?

DingoBilly,

You have a variety of options usually. Different brands, and then ones that have no milk, ones that are milky etc.

You also usually have the choice of having things cold or hot as well.

Ciram, (edited ) in Do you feel a UBI is more left- or right-wing (or other) and why?

Definitely left-wing since that money is taken through taxes (especially from the rich) and is given to anyone. I don’t see how that could be right wing as many here say

Cowbee,

I’d argue it isn’t left or right, just a tool. Leftism isn’t simply redistribution of wealth, but collective ownership of industry. Capitalists can use UBI as a way to replace more comprehensive safety nets, like single payer Healthcare, and implement a flat tax across the board.

You can use UBI as a leftist, to allow everyone to gain the profits of automation and increased productivity, or you can use it as an excuse to cut safety nets. Depends on how you use it!

uservoid1, (edited ) in How do you know if/when a cat's guilty

They could poop inside the box but digging it out by mistake when trying to cover it.

If you have more than one cat, one might be stressed by the other(s), especially if new.

Cat might be too old or too small to climb into the box, or not feeling well.

Some cats are assholes and doing it on purpose to show you they are not happy (is the box clean?).

cheese_greater,

Ya they have an auto and its always clean. It only started happenint since I spread out the mats to cover more of the floor.

I know the obvious solution is to go back to the way it was (more or less on top of each other) but so much shrapnel litter gets tracked otherwise.

jak,

Maybe just change mats. What’s the texture like?

THE_ANON,

ascallion, (edited )

That’s very true, but there’s something so blissful about those rare days I go to bed and wake up at like 2am and just kind of consciously drift in and out of a very light sleep for 5 hours. Just awake enough to think and relax, but not enough to stress over the upcoming day and responsibilities.

bionicjoey, in What do ridiculously rich people (like Bill Gates etc.) ask for/get for Christmas/birthdays/etc.?

davidisgreat,

I tried that one time. I went over budget and sent a really nice gift. I didn’t receive a gift myself. Then my recipient reported that I didn’t send a gift. I got banned.
