I really enjoy the sport of shooting. I don’t hunt. I don’t have a problem with people hunting so long as they eat what they shoot, hunt responsibly, and trophy hunters can get fucked. I like guns. I also think that people should have access to them.
That immediately seems to lump me in with the psychotic idiocy popularized by gun owners today. I despise those people. I have incredibly strong opinions about who should have access to guns, how guns should be stored, and how gun ownership should be licensed, insured, and actually monitored. The way the second amendment has been so woefully and foolishly written as to be vague and completely anachronistic by today’s standards it is doing far more damage than good, and the people that claim it’s to protect themselves from government are the very authoritarians trying to overthrow it.
So yeah, it sucks to want to participate in a sport full of asinine wingnuts or be associated with them. So I keep my mouth shut about owning guns.
Pretty sure that exact feature is built into the native Hue app, as long as you have the bulbs that support those kinds of colors. I see it when i try to make a “wake up” automation, i’d have to look again to see if there is an opposite for sunset. You can automate bedtime or go to sleep automations, and schedule them for sunset/sunrise or specific times.
Edit- just quickly looked through the app- there IS a sunrise for a wakeup automation, but not seeing any default sunset types. Might have to create your own by fading through some other sunset colors while dimming. Which is done basically like you are sayin; pick a color and and start time, then another color at another start time, etc. you can set whether to snap to these colors or fade to them over a period of time which also picking brightness. BUT- this is just in the native Hue app, i dont know about other Hue compatible apps.
That was my first thought. All the little adapters from Radioshack you used to be able to grab on a whim. Need to connect some RCA jacks to your headphone plugs? Or need a universal ac adapter with an assortment of dc plugs?

A surprising number of those things have ended up being at my local Best Buy (including both of your examples), but lower level components like resistors are impossible to find. Even at hobby shops there are only components specifically related to rc vehicles, nothing miscellaneous.
Edit: I guess this was a common opinion. You’d think interest had picked up with so many electronics “maker” things popping up with Arduino or the Pi.

Photography, mostly landscapes. Something satisfying about capturing the essence of a beautiful view and being able to share it with others who couldn’t be there to savour the moment. Sometimes a fancy digital camera, sometimes old timey film cameras my grandpa got me into. I’m also into backpacking, climbing, splitboarding, and otherwise just spending time in the mountains so there’s no shortage of views to capture.
I use cameras for a living and basically never shoot anything for fun anymore (if anything I’m shooting for my portfolio if I’m not getting paid), because there’s just no joy in it anymore, but landscapes are the exception I’ll always feel happy with getting photos of footage of the beautiful places I visit.
(I didn’t want to declare my gender, because ‘the site that shall not be named’ is an absolute dick to women, but I’m feeling like that might not be as much of a thing, here)
… I came across a group of 5 or 6 huge 6ft footballers, in a circle, kicking this small indigenous kid around and taunting him, I’m half their size, a girl ,probably 12, and just about the shyest quietest kid in school, but when I saw that, the pure rage that welled up in me, has no equivalent on earth, my muscles all lock up and knot and I (somehow) came out with a deep booming growl of a voice, that made all a these blokes just freeze dead, I boom at them, “what the fuck do you all think you’re doing!!” , and in a slow angry tone I add “do you all feel like big men, a heap of you, beating up on one guy” . And I stood there, all rage, staring them down. The indigenous boy noticed they were all frozen and scattered along the ground and grabbed his bag and pelted.
I realised this needed to end, and he had escaped, so I tried to throw out some finalising statement of ‘do you feel proud’ or’this better never happen again’ or something, I don’t really know, because by this stage, I’m gripped with ultimate terror of what I’ve done. These guys are twice my size, and happily beat up kids smaller than them. If they snap out of this and realise, I’m easy prey, I’m done for. I fake a hold on my rage, turn and (painfully) slowly walk away and proceed to lock myself in the girls toilet and cry for the rest of the day, expecting a mob of footballers to be out there, after snapping out of their trance, ready to dust me. But I made it home, unscathed. Those footballers gave me death stares, the rest of high school, but none of them ever spoke to me or gave me trouble, really. A taunt here and there, but always when surrounded by classmates. The indigenous boy came and found me and thanked me, later, I asked him if that had happened since and he said, yeah. But he still really appreciated me sticking up for him, that day.
I didn’t really think about what I did that day, those words to those footballers just fell out of my head, they rose up from the depths of my soul, I didn’t really feel like I controlled it.
But also, I know I’d do immoral shit, if I got superpowers, I’d go around and kill all the billionaires and dictators. I’d probably give them an ultimatum, give away your money or die.
I feel like the boys just represents a more realistic subsection of humans, there would be a percentage that are narcissists and have powers, and a percentage that are highly moralistic, like in gen v. And I could see capitalism being the real bad guy, in real life, just like in the boys.
But I want to be a billionaire one day. I want to start a company and grow it, as ethically as I can but still survive in capitalism. Would you still kill me? Will people hate me if I fulfill my dream? I want to raise incredible capital, invest it in people, their bright ideas, and trade schools for autistic kids, and retire to a private island. Am I still in your hit list just because I’m a billionaire?

You are probably safe for multiple reasons. Not the least of which is, unless you are already on the winning side of the rigged game, you will not become a billionaire. Millionaire maybe.
Hopefully by selling multiple products with good value at a favorable market price, and then reinvesting to repeat with another idea. I’m not trying to be an oil company, though I would invest.

But do you consider the other side of your views? I find it hard to believe someone actually has a true and complete understanding of capitaliam and then still goes on to defend it. Unless they have skin in the game. You don’t sound like you listen, while bagging out other people for not listening. I don’t defend capitalism further than the fact that it’s the best system we have at the moment as something people will accept, considering the only alternatives are anarchism or socialism.
What I do hate is the ideas that turned my country from a first world country to a third world country in less than 100 years. But trying to explain what it’s like to someone that lives in such privilege as the US is like trying to explain a color to a blind person. And my comment wasn’t aimed at the validity of leftist ideals or the value of capitalism but rather at how polarized Lemmy has been in my short experience on the site.
I’ve blocked over 30 subs at this point trying to get politics out of my feeds. And for some reason all of those were leftist subs, like as if opposing opinions weren’t allowed on lemmy

The very first thing I do whenever I move into a new place is get things on the wall. Floating shelves and framed pictures especially. I usually just buy cheap frames that I think look good.
Without exception, people normally comment that the place looks lived in despite there being boxes all over the place. The trick, as I’ve found, is to make your home look the way you want. It’s your space, and if it’s your space you can decorate it how you like and it can’t be “wrong”. The decorating style speaks to your style and your own flairs and personality will come through. Do what’s pleasing to your eye.
Personally, knick-knacks and some books, old DVDs of favorite movies, travel (or other) mementos, and small plants on the shelves seal the deal for me. For pictures and other framed pieces, my aesthetic leans towards semi-chaos looking. No neat rows and columns on the wall. I just throw things up and move them around as I see fit.
Don’t sweat the details, there is no “wrong” when it comes to personal preference for your living space. Make some tiny holes in the wall for your “pieces of flair” and don’t worry, they can be fixed or filled in as needed.
If that’s all still too much, get some houseplants and spread them around your home.
Tons of great info here! Yeah like I think pictures + shelves for the walls are the way to go. It seems like for us it’s a matter of just putting something up to get started then that’ll jumpstart the rest. Love the idea of “semi-chaos.” I feel like my friends places have some more refined style but maybe ours just doesn’t work that way. It’s nice to know people embrace a less pristine style.
Something I read online ages ago that kind of struck a chord with me…it was something to the effect of “treat your home like a playground and not a museum”. And you know what, it’s true! I enjoy it when people in my home feel comfortable picking up a knick-knack that looks interesting to them, especially so if I see a kid eyeing something and the look on their face when I hand it to them! Within reason of course :)

Electronic parts. There used to be several local shops and a Radio Shack where you could go in and just buy basic electronic components (capacitors, resistors, photocells, transistors, breadboards, potentiometers, you name it). They phased all of that out in favour of toys and trinkets before just folding.
Now I have to order on Mouser or Digikey and wait. Sure there’s WAY more variety, but I miss being able to just run & grab something I might have forgotten (or, let’s be honest, fried somehow).
I’d say 400% + is a more realistic cost of buying components local vs. online. Regardless, I miss having the local option even tho I can actually get most parts delivered faster than it used to take me to drive to Fry’s & back.
The only hope I’ve had near me is Microcenter. Only place I’ve seen in ages where I can walk out with at least some resistors and sensors but the selection can be…eh on some items.
I miss Fry’s too. Got so much cool stuff there before online shopping was safe and convenient.
But they totally dropped the ball. The weird disconnect between their brick and mortar store and their online store, the constant out of stocks that was the norm, even over a decade ago. Not to mention the “sticker of death” on all the returned product they put back on the shelf.
I used to live in Toronto, and I’d hit up Active Surplus regularly. An iconic place for any hobbyist in the area. I don’t think the guy in the gorilla suit works there anymore though :(
I feel hanging shelves and putting tchotchkes on em really add a lot of personal touches. I went with some geometric shaped shelves that I placed in a pattern on the wall and put some object de arte on em and that did a lot of good for making it feel more homey. I’m embellishing a bit on “object de arte”, I got a go set, a red wax elephant, a Star Trek ship and a small plant on there, just some stuff that relates to my interests and a few splashes of color.
If you’re nervous about putting holes in the wall, some wire frame shelving units can work, too, and you can get them in all sorts of shapes and sizes these days. If you search using the keywords “geometric” or “asymmetrical”, you can easily find some designs that help break up the flat lines of a book case style shelf that I feel adds a dynamic feel to the decoration.
Lastly, if you can splurge for it, there’s always the classic paintings. Find an artist you like and go for a print or two. I went with stuff by Kandinsky, but I really like that sort of abstract, dynamic piece, to my boyfriend’s chagrin, so maybe talk about it with the people you live with first more than I did (he’s come to tolerate it plenty fine though and we get compliments all the time so haha I win).
I do really enjoy geometric and abstract stuff so I’ll have to look into them, we really just want to give our home some more personality so it feels like home. We have some artwork but never know which room they really fit in since they’re all kind of different moods and aesthetics.
To parrot some of the other comments, the holes needed to hang artwork and photos are very easily covered up with a lil spackle (or even toothpaste!) and paint, but also command hooks work very well for hanging things even up to ten pounds, and come off cleanly if you remove them slowly and according to the instructions.
I’ve hung paintings in spots and later decided they don’t look right there and moved em. Sometimes it’s helpful to put it up to see how it works in the space and move it later.
We do have our older kitty, buutt may be looking into getting another! I do feel like getting 2 together is the way to go so it’s definitely something my wife and I are thinking through!

Yeah I agree with everything you’ve said! I’m super cautious before adopting any new pets. The only time I’d just get one is if I’m maybe adopting from a shelter to give an older cat a new home. My main concern is how they’d interact with our old lady cat because she can be a bit feisty!
I have my own miracle in terms of that. As long as everyone has everything they need and you use treats strategically, I catch them all the time laying down with like a couple inches between butts, which would have been unthinkable to me previously.
Cats are far more trainable than people know or are willing to give them credit for. I literally train them >= the amount they train me ;)
The first time, I was 7 and it snowed overnight in Florida (a little). I saw it and ran in to wake my mom up but she kept saying “it’s frost, go back to bed”. She also made me go to school and the only other kids in my class were 2 kids from Michigan.
I was 20 when I first saw snow falling from the sky. Was in England, looked out the window and panicked because I thought there was ash falling from the sky. Asked what was burning and my boyfriend (Scottish) said “That’s snooo, lass”.
If you want to add personality then start buying stuff or collecting things from where you enjoy going.
UpstairsOne wall is dedicated to pictures of family. Son’s bedroom is tractor themed and has one wall in John Deere green, another wall has a large laser cut tractor cling on it. Daughter’s bedroom is horse themed with a mural that a friend’s daughter painted, opposite wall is purple. Laundry room is clothing themed, kidding ;). Master bedroom and bath is beach themed with pictures from Hawaii and our favorite OBX beach and bed wall is teal. Loft is music themed with a piano and flute + things.
Main FloorOther walls in the house have bamboo cutting boards of the states we have family in, our state flag on wood, a large picture of our a bunch of doors in our hometown that our friend took and we framed, flags hanging vertically in my office (it has high ceilings), a wood laser cutting of my wife’s profession, a painting my father made in our dining room. Opposite wall has a massive picture of one of our favorite places . Entryway has a 4 shelf unit that has beer steins, Lladro sculptures, a piece of wood from the log home my father in law built (and we helped with), a large heart shaped price of granite rock from a friend’s property in the Rockies, lots of Tinkerbell stuff (wife’s mother loved her), lots of Hawaiian themed things (we love Kauai).
BasementMovie themed. Wife’s craft room is Harry Potter themed. Theater has movie posters and a large Disney castle picture over the couch. We also have a movie popcorn maker on an electric fireplace which is a lot of fun. Son’s bedroom is space themed since he loves that.
All of that took us ~20 years to collect. My wife looks at Pinterest and other places for ideas others have done and then incorporates what we like. Don’t worry about what other people will think of what you do. They want to see your personality, that’s the fun part!
Thank you so much for the breakdown of all the different rooms! Really helps set some perspective for the variety of examples and how that can work! We definitely have some stuff we’ve accumulated but could never decide where they should go. I think I’ll have to take a weekend and just start putting stuff up here and there and see how we like it. The worst thing we’ve done so far is really not attempt anything so we don’t even know if we’d like something.
I agree with the insight that a lot of news has a really negative focus. That is, a lot of things like murders or disasters or the like that don’t really have all that much direct impact on the lives of most people are very mediagenic, so get disproportionately-heavy coverage. We wind up with a really skewed-negative perspective in the news media relative to reality.
However, I also have to say that I wasn’t necessarily blown away by some past efforts I’ve seen along the lines of remedying this either – that is, a lot of feel-good stories aren’t necessarily all that important to someone’s life either. Not to say that someone can’t want and consume feel-good stories either, but if one’s goal is to try to pick up useful information, probably what one would best read is neither material about shark attacks, nor about someone who overcame cancer or whatnot.
