pdxfed, in Anyone have any guides or tips for how to decorate home living spaces to feel more "lived in"?

I have a Home Decoration Guide - Whiterun that I’d let you take off my hands if you want. Definitely recommend filling up trophy cases, weapon and shield racks as well as bookshelves from your favorite plot lines, arcanery or narratives. Have something cooking. And or course, don’t forget the furniture and wall decor.

I’ll have to look that up! Would definitely love a guide for extra info/tips and inspiration. I think wall decor is our largest hurdle, along with making sure to keep clutter to a minimum. Having a toddler makes it difficult sometimes.

Bebo, (edited ) in What's your wider fediverse setup?

Lemmy: Presently using one account (this one). Have another as backup. Access on android using mostly Eternity and now since the latest update, Voyager because I’m loving scaled sort. Access on Windows PC using Voyager, alexandrite and lemmy ui in browser if I need to access account settings.

Mastodon: one account only, semi-anonymous. Access on android using Moshidon and on PC using Elk. Use the Mastodon ui only if I need to access account settings. I mostly use Mastodon for posting whatever I find interesting and occasionally browse by hashtags as per my mood.

Bookwyrm: one account, no app. Trying to make this a goodreads alternative for myself.

Where did you get this pic? So random, is it StableDiffusion?

ani,

I’m using Bing Create which in turn uses DALL·E 3

cheese_greater,

Very cool! Can I send you something once in a blue moon if I have a funny idea and see what you can get it to do?

ani,

Yeah sure that sounds cool

ink, (edited ) in What is your favorite hobby?

Mine is drawing. I’ve had other hobbies and have other things that I enjoy doing, but drawing is the most engaging thing for me. Your standards always outpace your ability, so there’s never a moment when you feel like you’ve accomplished everything you could’ve accomplished. There’s always something new to draw or learn about.

Valmond,

Ha ha nice name ^^

So carbon ink or Indian :-D ? I made a community for art in progress !aip to share progress, there are so many parameters and combinations…

So what are you drawing and what are inspiring you most?

ink,

Haha, any kind of ink works for me, as long as I can draw with it! Also, I’m always looking for art communities on Lemmy, so I just joined!

Currently, I’m doing studies of mechanical joints and greebles to improve my ability to draw hard surface stuff (e.g. mechs, vehicles, inorganic constructs), and I’m also drawing a shitpost meme when I need to take a break from studying! :)

Valmond,

Cool! Post as you like, and share other art communities too, IMO we’re all in it together!

Greebles, guess I just learned a new word :-D that seems, hrm, time consuming to say the least O_o when can we see an example?

Cheers

hrimfaxi_work, in Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?
@hrimfaxi_work@midwest.social avatar

Boot and shoe care products. If you’re lucky, Target or whatever might carry one or two tins of medicre Kiwi shoe polish and maybe one type of leather conditioner. I remember having better selection at just the grocery store and being spoiled for options at any of the 4 or 5 proper shoe stores that used to be in every neighborhood.

schmidtster,

Marks or any cobbler will have those.

@hrimfaxi_work@midwest.social avatar

The closest shoe repair place to me is 60 miles away these days 😔 It’s not like I live in a small town, either! I remember when there was one in every second or third strip mall. It’s not like it’s tricky to order a bottle of Obenauf’s online, but I miss being able to just be like, “I better swing off at this random place to pick some up while I’m thinking about it.”

TheBananaKing, in Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?

I don’t think so, at least not for everyone.

My grandfather (born round the start of the first world war) was hideously racist, not overtly religious, but neither of those seemed to figure into his horrified disgust and moral panic at “rock and roll”. Seriously, he’d be less shocked at someone wiping their ass with a slice of bread and eating it, than he would be at them playing rock music in the house. If it featured on a TV ad, or came in the window from someone driving past, it was like he was under siege.

Part of it was the sex-and-drugs angle, I’m sure, but I think even that was a small part of the whole.

I think the biggest part was that it was a symbol of counterculture, of men growing their hair long and rejecting the order and authority of the world he was born into. He experienced a fuckton of social change in his lifetime, he couldn’t navigate the culture any more, and this left him lost, angry and afraid. There were these people pissing on all the symbols he understood, and waving around a bunch he didn’t, while rejecting all the values he’d been taught - and dancing about it, like (from his perspective) a horde of crackheads ransacking a library and smearing shit on everything for lulz.

I mean, I wince and block channels with any kind of ‘reaction videos’, and I’m only genX. I get it, to a degree - though I’m trying at least to ensure that when I get irretrievably stuck in the past, it’s at least from this century. But the change I’ve been through only stretches from Kojak to Skibidi Toilet whatever the fuck that is. His stretched from before cars or refrigeration to the internet itself. I don’t think I’ll see as big a transformation as he did in his time; I hope I cope a shitload better than he did with what I do see, but who knows?

cosmicrookie, in What are some good questions to ask your boss during your yearly review?
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Ask your boss how much they are making and how they got the job.

rottingleaf, in Does "Rock music is evil / of the devil" have racist roots?

Along a different track of thinking, from where did rock music originate? Slaves. They created the guitar because slave-owners didn’t allow them to make music with drums.

What the flying fuck? The guitar is one of the oldest mediterranean instruments. Naturally it evolved from antiquity, but just how did you think that?

That attitude stems, naturally, from association with sex, drugs and pacifist rebellion with rock music. Organized religion often supports sexual morality, is suspicious of drugs (when it doesn’t incorporate their usage), and considers the social hierarchies to be of divine root, thus going to war would be the right thing to do and pacifism would be the opposite.
