Geek_King, in Out of all the cars you've owned, which one holds a special place in your heart as the absolute favourite.

2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse! Pearlescent Sunset, SE spoiler, pedals, and SE stripe. Decent sound system, handled great in the snow, and was fast enough to get me in trouble! I had it for 11 years, solid car.

ByteJunk, in What are some generational differences between millennials and Gen Z ?
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

There’s strong statistical evidence suggesting that millennials are, on average, older than gen z’ers. It not clear from the latest studies what could have caused this presumed age gap.

Those same studies also evidenced the startling fact that the tested individuals shared over 99.9% of their genome and could in fact belong to the same species, which is what prompted all the recent controversy after one of the lead researchers said in a televised interview that “they’re all people”.

immortaly007, (edited ) in Spotify Wrapped 2023 - what 0.05% are you in over how many monthly listeners?

Top 0.05% of Leprous with 8872 minutes. Amazing band!

Baahb,

What happened to Leprous? I only started doing metal a few years ago and Leprous caughty attention, but the newer stuff kinda shook me. Just wasn’t able to make that jump, but if there were context, maybe I could bridge it.

immortaly007,

I actually only discovered them like a year ago. But I really like their most recent album Especially songs like nighttime disguise are amazing!

Baahb,

Shoot I guess I’ll have to give them another chance. Maybe I’ll be able to make that genre jump

cashews_best_nut, (edited ) in What are some generational differences between millennials and Gen Z ?

As a millenial I found I had a lot more in common with my Gen Z brother than I do with my boomer father. However, the little shit treated and thought of me like I’m a boomer. He’d consider my shitty FPS playing on console to be a sign “I couldn’t play games” (I’m a PC gamer).

I’d like to think he’ll mature and realise he was being a little cunt but I doubt he will.

TimewornTraveler, in I want to study psychology but won't AI make it redundant in a couple of years?

homie lemme let you in on a secret that shouldn’t be secret

in therapy, 40% of positive client outcomes come from external factors changing

10% come from my efforts

10% come from their efforts

and the last 40% comes from the therapeutic alliance itself

people heal through the relationship they have with their counselor

not a fucking machine

this field ain’t going anywhere, not any time soon. not until we have fully sentient general ai with human rights and shit

I don’t think there’s harm in allowing people who would never be able to afford life-saving medicine to have life-saving medicine cat-puzzle-feeder style

Edit: this was me and access hasn’t changed the fact that I do no generally derive value from it.

intensely_human,

You realize that adds up to 60% right?

dog,

Interestingly, and somewhat related, it was tested years ago whether a Robot could bring comfort/social support to lonely pets/elderly.

The results were outstandingly in support, and this is going into actual commercial usage/development as we speak.

redline23, in Is CCleaner still people's preferred computer cleaning app?

I don’t think I’ve used any cleaner product since the Windows XP days. I don’t view it as necessary anymore.

One of the other programs to see file size on disk recommended on this thread should be enough.

I would highly recommend O&O ShutUp10++ to reduce built in spying in Windows. It’s good at explaining what each option you’re doing is. The only thing I would caution on is changing the Edge browser policies with O&O. That will lock it down into enterprise mode and you won’t be able to change certain settings through the UI anymore.

lightnsfw,

I’m the same. Haven’t used one since those days and I work in IT.

captainlezbian, (edited ) in Lesbians of lemmy, how do you introduce your SO to other people without getting them confused for just a friend?

“This is my wife” works real well

For my girlfriend, I mostly just correct people if they’re mistaken. “Oh we’re more than just friends” type statements.

Also fuck is the platonic use of girlfriend back? Dammit

0x4E4F,

Hm… so she calls you her wife as well, correct 🤔?

captainlezbian,

Our government even calls us wives

0x4E4F,

IDK, just asking 🤷.

Yeah, hate to break it to you, but it isn’t even just women/girls using it for platonic friends. Men/boys are too.

Not too surprisingly, that hasn’t happened with boyfriend that I’ve run across. Which is kinda fucked up when you consider what the difference in usage represents.

captainlezbian,

My grandma talks like that but in my area in my generation it’s generally understood that [gender]friend is romantic and friend isn’t. If gender is relevant it’s “the [genders]”

That terminology is incredibly frustrating as a lesbian. Especially since it’s regularly used alongside calling my wife my friend despite me repeatedly referring to her as my wife

SharkAttak,
@SharkAttak@kbin.social avatar

I heard that violently frenching in front of them would clear any misunderstanding, nuance or misinterpretation.

"Nope, Mildred, those ain't gals pals, for sure"

captainlezbian,

Unfortunately it will just get us sexually harassed or disowned depending on the audience

Scubus,

Does a casual “nice” count as sexual harassment?

captainlezbian,

It definitely will make me feel uncomfortable shoeing romantic affection towards my partner in front of you in the future

Scubus,

Thanks for the input, honestly didnt expect a serious response.

I asked because my family is really weird. We’re very… open? Sexual jokes are very common 'round these parts

captainlezbian,

Yeah there are people who can pull it off, but because many men fetishize sapphicism it’s uncomfortable in general, especially since men do absolutely nothing for me and I’ve had guys get really brazen with hitting on me when they see me do gay stuff.

So yeah if there’s no doubt in my mind it’s a “get it girl” style nice, I’m cool with it but that’s a hard bar to cross.

flicker,

I understand why this is frustrating and am not trying to take that from you, but thought you'd enjoy knowing that the last old lady who I confronted about calling my girlfriend as my girlfriend (in the platonic sense) was genuinely confused about my irritation, since "isn't that the best part of having a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend? That they're also your best friend? I always thought you two really got that part right."

It's some arethestraightsokay stuff (and happened in like 2004) but I thought it might give you a smile.

mnemonicmonkeys,

Personally I’ve only ever heard “platonic boyfriends” when it was platonic

Nemo, in What movie should me and fiance watch tonight?

The Yugoslavian film Underground, if you can find it. Hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, with a splash of Magical Realism.

FlavorPacket, in What RSS readers should I recommend to others?

NewsBlur is awesome. Great web interface, native apps for mobile, super customizable, and the developer is a great dude. I’ve been using it for a few years now since I got tired of running my own ttrss instance.

Globulart,

What’s the deal with autism speaks? I read the wiki page but only saw a few relatively minor controversies

key,
@key@lemmy.keychat.org avatar

In 2013 the APA merged autism and aspergers into the bucket of Autism Spectrum Disorder which many now refer to as just autism. Autism is a spectrum disorder where on one side you have “highly functional” people who are mostly indistinguishable from neurotypical folk and on the other end you have people who cannot speak, cannot function on their own, are dependent on their family or the state their entire lives, and can often have other serious health issues.

Autism speaks was founded in 2005 and merged with groups started in the 90s. So the “Autism” in the name is not really referring to modern ASD as a whole and its focus has always been primarily on the latter group. As a result the group has advocated for things meant to support individuals on the higher severity side of the spectrum, which includes a focus more on family as spokespeople, and supporting research to prevent the worst parts of autism (a “cure”). The “cure” bit is the main issue as in the past that was literally in the mission statement and mentioned in marketing constantly.

The “Autistic community” you encounter online inherently lacks those who can’t speak or write. Autism represents an aspect of themselves they each have different feelings about but it’s very often a core piece of their identity. As a result Autism Speak’s approach is offensive because it takes an objectively more negative view of their identity (a “cure” can border into eugenics in that light) and includes a focus on other people besides the autistic individual. In my opinion, the community is unfortunately highly neglectful of those who literally can’t have a voice in the conversation but that’s a whole different matter.

Autism is bolted into my personality; it's part of who I am as a person. I take great offense at the notion that I should be cured of being me.

    ArugulaZ,
    @ArugulaZ@kbin.social avatar

They're not so much "autism speaks" as "we speak FOR the autistic because the autistic can't be trusted to speak for themselves." A more honest name would be "International Karens Inconvenienced by Autistic Children."

Amazon, PayPal, Google. Did I say PayPal? Oh, right and don’t forget PayPal.

    Mouselemming,

    Tell me about PayPal?

    astanix,

PayPal acts as a bank without having to follow any banking laws. You have 10k in your PayPal account and PayPal decides its theirs? No recourse for you.

Just search paypal took my money and you can read all the horror stories.

    Mouselemming,

I only have PayPal linked to a credit card, so I can always pit that ruthless company against them, I guess. But it does sour me on them if that’s how they treat their merchants
