You know IMDB? Well there’s also IMFDB, Internet Movie Firearms Data Base. You can look up any movie and figure out what guns were used in it.

For example here’s the one for the movie HEAT (1995)

stoy, in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

This is a bit of a story, and depending on how you define it, I have gone back and forth between dumb and smart phones before I finally Settled on iPhone with the 5S

My first phone was a Nokia 3330, great phone, worked well, a bit too well for my parents liking when I found the wireless access protocol feature, and bruned 100sek on useless, slow internet access back in 2001 or so…

Later, I think I managed the impossible and broke my phone, and got my dads old Nokia 8210, that was extremely tiny, and really cool.

Dropped that in the snow and lost it.

Got a Sony Ericsson K700i, cool design, pretty useless phone, I lost it at home for months, and switched to my grandmothers old Nokia 5110, I meassured it against a real brick in the walls of my school, it was two thirds the size of the brick, found my K700i, but the joystick never really worked, so…

I got a Sony Ericsson K800i! That was a beast, awesome camera, rugged as hell, and super reliable, it was the first phone I had that had a usable music player, I had a large memory stick card that I filled with music, and just jammed, I broke so many 3.5mm adapters…

Then I got what I would describe as a smartish feature phone, the Nokia 5800, I even ran Putty on it to connect with a friend’s Linux server and get on IRC with screen irssi! The phone was a touch phone, but resistive touch, so I needed a stylus, the music player was annoying, but the sound from the speakers, wow, it had BASE, and actually sounded good! I could even access Youtube on it, was brilliant on WiFi!

But the 5800 started deteriorating, and I had just got my first job, with my first paycheck I splashed the cash hard, and bought, what was my first smart phone, it was beutiful, had a fold out keyboard with a Swedish keyboard, a capacitive touchscreen, HDMI out, and it was mine. I had bought myself the amazing Nokia E7, can you believe it? A real Nokia E7! It was as badass as you could get back then, I felt like a complete hacker when I ran Putty on it with the keyboard folded out, I had even set up touch gestures to navigate irssi by swiping!

That phone got pickpocketed.

I could not afford to replace my E7 at the time, so I bought a Nokia Asha 300, it was crap, but worked well enough.

Now, at that time, I had a spare sim from an old mobile broadband I used in a temp apartment, it had unlimited data…

So I got a second phone!

I found a used Nokia E72, new in box, my dad had used one, and I liked the look of it, so I bought it from a reputable used phone dealer, and used it as mobile entertainment device, I could access youtube, even on the super tiny screen I got enjoyment out of the 144p video, but what I most enjoyed was internet radio, specifically, SLAYradio, an internet radio station only playing C64 remixes, that often can legally be downloaded for free, and I got so much music that way!

A few years later, I had got rid of the 300, and was using my E72 as my main phone, three days after gettibg a new job snd getting the final paycheck rom my last job, my E72 screen broke, so I got on the iPhone train with the S5

pewgar_seemsimandroid,

Q: have you ever used an android?

stoy,

Yes, during the time when I had the Asha 300, I also carried several Android tablets, I also tried to switch to Android after my second iPhone, an iPhone SE (the original model), as I saw that Nokia had made a beutiful and fairly affordable Android phone, the 6.1

I ran it for two months, untill I dropped it and completely obliterated the screen, then I saw that I would have to send the phone away, and just gave up and went back to my iPhone SE.

One feeling I have allways had when it comes to Android, is that it feels like Google constantly is looking over my shoulder watching what I do, I don’t get that feeling on my iPhone, that doesn’t mean that Apple isn’t watching me constantly, but the feeling is different.

aordogvan, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

Tried various smartwatches and the problems always came down to one thing: battery.

Some of the watches batteries last a few days or a week but the screen remains dark and to see time you have to touch the screen our flip your wrist which gets on my nerves.

Now wearing a regular watch and each time I look at the time I’m in awe of the miracle of seeing the time displayed clearly.

When they come up with a watch that can keep the screen lit for at least a week without recharge I’ll reconsider…

Sea_pop,

I have a withings scan watch. Battery life is 25+ days. My original one, which hubby now wears, has a battery life of over 30 days but doesn’t record spo2. Both are water resistant up to 5 ATM, sapphire glass face and an analog watch face with a small, touch less, digital display. I will never not have a hybrid watch again.

shalafi,

Wife wanted me to wear my Samsung to our wedding yesterday. Yeah. It was dead after taking it to the camp where we had a cabin. One day, didn’t even wear it and it was dead.

And of course it takes a special charger.

antizero99,

One word, garmin. Garmin has its own special charger but it’s designed for ruggedneas and there are several adapters on the market that let you charge it with usbc. My 7x goes for 3+weeks with spo2 turned on and does everything else a normal smartwatch does like notifications, quick replies, music, etc.

Psychodelic,

I went with a hybrid watch since it doesn’t need a new battery for months

antizero99,

You should look at garmin. My 7x goes for weeks with all data collection on and the screen is clear enough to see without the back light when there is enough ambient light.

Unless I am recording tons of workouts, I don’t have to charge the battery but every few weeks. I sometimes plug it in when I take a shower so I don’t have to worry about it.

turbowafflz, in is freeBSD resistant to o.mg cable and rubber ducky usb?

Any operating system that supports a usb keyboard is vulnerable. In theory maybe you could limit the vulnerability by blocking all but one keyboard but I don’t know of anything that does that

lemann,

Pretty much this.

They behave like standard HID devices unless they’re scripted to emulate something else, like say a network interface… not really a feasible thing to fullt mitigate, and probably not worth worrying about IMO unless you’re a bank or something

voidMainVoid, in What Linux distro should I choose?

Garuda is a great Arch distro which is gaming-focused. I do some coding, and it works fine for that, too, but I actually don’t know which distros are better for that than others.

On the other hand, Garuda also does things a bit differently than other distros, so I don’t know if it would be good for somebody new to Linux. I recommend checking out some videos on YouTube just to see what it looks like.

logicbomb, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

What timing! I am so pissed at my smartwatch right now.

I got a smart watch because I was having some sleep problems, and I found that some Apple watches can monitor your oxygen levels while sleeping. I suspected it was related to other things like stress, but I wanted to be a bit more comfortable and say that it’s probably not sleep apnea.

So, the point is that I must wear it when I’m sleeping. Also, like any reasonable person, I have my phone set up not to disturb me at night. But at least on Apple watches, this means that my alarm goes off only on my watch. I can’t figure out any way for it to not go off on my watch, and only go off on my phone, unless I simply take off the watch.

It’s the MOST ANNOYING THING. First, because it means that you can’t have your alarm go off across the room. You can always turn it off on your watch, which means that you can even turn it off without waking up. And then, you have no alarm at all. So, if I absolutely have to wake up for some meeting or airplane or something, I can’t wear my watch to bed.

Also, maybe this is just me, but I hate when my watch vibrates on my wrist. I hate the feeling. Every time it vibrates, I have the urge to smash the thing. If I had to choose a set up, I’d have my phone always vibrate, and my watch never vibrate. But I can’t figure out how to make that work on Apple.

This morning was an absolute nightmare, though. Now, I’m used to turning off my alarm on my watch, but when I went to turn it off this morning, the watch was deep in some shitty menu. I couldn’t figure out how to turn it off. And it was just vibrating on my wrist non-stop. Obviously, this was made much more difficult because I was just waking up.

I eventually figured it out, but the point is that the UI is obviously less refined than, for example, the phone UI, where this sort of alarm hiding has never happened in all of my years owning a smart phone.

Anyways, to answer your question, I prefer to wear a smart watch, because a regular watch doesn’t do anything for me. But goddamn do I hate my smart watch right now!

Psychodelic,

Have you heard of hybrid watches? I have a fancy kronaby but there’s other options. The battery lasts months and it does the basics pretty well

Alexstarfire, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

TheGreenGolem,

Me too. I just hate everything that should be on my wrist or neck. They are just really not comfortable for me.

vettnerk, (edited ) in What was the last dumb phone you had before your first smartphone?

Sony Ericsson W810i. Got it in 2007, I think. When it started to die on me in late 2009 i replaced it with an iPhone 3G, which was my first apple phone. It was also my last apple phone as I hated how locked down everything was.

EDIT: I just remembered I had a secondary dumbphone around 2012 or thereabouts. It was a dual SIM nokia of some sort that I used mainly as a backup phone in case my main ran out of battery while I was on the move.

idunnololz,
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

I had a Sony Ericsson too as my last dumb phone but I don’t remember the model. I just remember it slides out to reveal the number pad and that it was great for music.

I think it’s the W580i. Thanks!

lightnsfw, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

I wear an automatic Seiko. I like that I don’t have to worry about a battery staying charged/wearing out over time. I just have to take a second every couple weeks to set it forward to account for it losing a few minutes. Another factor is when I looked at the smart watches that were available last time I got a new phone and they were all very large and I have small wrists which I don’t want to emphasize. My current watch fits well.

I would like to get a bracelet or something that tracks biometric data but from what I saw when I was investigating those is that they all have watch functionally as well and I don’t want to wear two watches.

46_and_2, (edited )

You can get a Whoop band or Oura ring, or something similar - from what I’ve gathered they are just like regular bracelet or ring, with good sensors inside, and no screen to distract. Plus, this probably makes them way more lightweight than watch-like smartbands.

lightnsfw,

The whoop band looks like what I’m looking for but that membership is too steep for something that I just want to gather data. Thanks for the recommendations.

clay_pidgin, in Anyone know of any Fediverse gift exchanges I can still join for the 2023 holiday season?

If you find one, let me know? I never did one on Reddit but it always looked fun.

bionicjoey,

I did it one year on Reddit and got a really cool bottle opener. It arrived in a package with Danish/Greenlandic postage and the handle of the bottle opener appears to be made of whalebone carved in some sort of Inuit style.
