Shinzid, in What game do you play to just chill?

I like to play any type of horde clearing game where I can shut my brain off and just swing/shoot my way through a bunch of enemies. Some examples of this are deep rock galactic and vermintide 2. One scratches the shooty itch and the other scratches the swingy itch

If I ain’t shooting or swinging I like to play roguelites. Slay the spire and faster than light are classics I keep returning to. Interested in trying out cobalt core soon which looks like a mix of STS and FTL

Doxatek,

I’m glad someone knows ftl I really like that game. Played it for a lot of years and is nostalgic to me. Recently tried the multiverse mods for it which revitalized it for me

Shinzid,

Huh. Never occurred to me to try out modded ftl. Didn’t even know it had a modding scene. Will definitely check out this multiverse mod you mentioned

Doxatek,

It’s really polished and expansive. New races and new ships and quests weapons and everything. It’s pretty sweet!

Soup, crackers, nuts.

weeeeum, in I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school.

As a guy that works at a repair store, used laptops are insanely cheap. You’ll get a much more powerful and capable laptop if you go used, and you’re not at any risk because many reputable sellers and refurbishers will provide warranties too.

Most importantly when looking on eBay for laptops you want an SSD, if it says it’s using an HDD or “hard drive” avoid it. SSDs are 6x faster or more than HDDs and are much more reliable in mobile devices. They are cheap now too and most quality refurbs will have an SSD in most of their devices.

A lot of SSDs are somewhat low capacity so make sure she gets a little more storage than what she needs right now, but also external storage is pretty effective if the laptop’s storage gets a little full.

Other important features. 1080 HD screen. This will be really nice to have and often means that the processor on the laptop is pretty decent too for day to day tasks (most modern CPUs on many computers are far more powerful than most people ever need).

8gb or preferably 16gb of RAM. A lot of new computers today have a lot of RAM, which now means software devs are a lot lazier optimizing their programs. More RAM nowadays is really important and for good longevity I highly recommend 16gb.

Availability of parts. If you’re interested in a laptop, open a new eBay tab and put in “laptop model number parts”. If you see an abundance of cheap parts available that’s a very good sign. This means repairs are not only possible but likely easy and cheap.

Additionally feel free to ask questions, if you see a laptop that’s great but lacks a bit of ram, or has an SSD a little too small you can ask the seller to upgrade it. It’s gonna cost a little but shouldn’t be much. Unfortunately screens and processors (in most cases!) cannot be upgraded and usually not worth asking.

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice! I think I’m going to take someone else’s recommendation and get a refurb from NewEgg because the prices look good, but I wanted to know about the RAM because that seems to be a big price point. If 16 is preferable, that’s what we’ll go for, so thank you for telling me about that. I was planning on getting an SSD instead of an HDD anyway due to the speed and reliability as you say. I’m not too worried about storage because I am guessing most of the things she has to save for school will be cloud-based. Certainly in the (shitty) online program she’s in now, all of her work is done in the lessons, which are sort of PowerPoint slides but more interactive. I don’t even know for sure if we couldn’t just go with a Chromebook instead, but they say Windows or Mac OS, so I have to go with what they say. Anyway, it looks like Chromebooks aren’t any cheaper than refurbished notebooks running Windows 10. Thanks again for the advice!

Blaze, (edited ) in Where can I find a desktop Lemmy app?
@Blaze@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Did you try lemmyapps.netlify.app filtering on “Web”? Some websites like Photon should fit your need

UnRelatedBurner,

this. I had a feeling some of yall made a guide website. This all is in the deepweb, that’s the problem. Thanks, will try some from this database.

JackGreenEarth,

Or even ‘Linux’, if you want a native app.

UnRelatedBurner,

I finally got around to checking the offers out, I’ll use Photon. Thank you for this collection.

Happy to help!

aaaa, (edited ) in How would you explain Lemmy/Kbin to a Reddit person or to a social media person?

Consider your specific audience you are reaching out to.

Honestly the biggest barrier for entry into the Lemmy content isn’t choosing an instance. You can easily tell someone to sign up for Lemmy.world or kbin.social without going into detail about what that means.

The issue is that most social media users don’t want to spend an hour or two searching for communities and blocking bots. They want a feed that is appealing at first, that they can tweak incrementally as they get more familiar with the service and its content.

With that in mind, what people want is to know what makes the experience helpful to them right now. I think that boils down to two primary concepts: Draw people in to specific communities that are more accessible than their Reddit counterparts, or convince them why Reddit is not a good experience for them

The latter is a tough sell to someone who already is happy with the Reddit experience. And the trouble with the former is there’s currently not a great deal of communities that are clearly better than on Reddit. The few that I would say count are fairly niche interests.

I think the Lemmy and kbin software needs a set of default subscriptions for guests and new users. Something curated by instance admins to provide the best new user experience, while still allowing them to customize it from there.

For what it’s worth, I would expect most social media users not to care about any of the decentralization aspects. Putting too much focus on the “it’s like email” thing is likely to fall on deaf ears at first.

Harpsist, in Best place to buy replacement parts for a laptop?

Same question I need am E key for a laptop. It’s out of warrenty. The official key is going to cost me 20$ to which I laughed then hung up.

So. Yeah. Where I key cheap E key?

North America.

weeeeum,

Unfortunately replacing laptop keys isn’t easy. First there’s no standard, even on the same model and it’s difficult. I’ve had supposedly identical keyboards but with slightly different mounting, and were incompatible with each other on a key to key basis. It’s necessary in most situations to buy the whole keyboard (sometimes the entire palm rest too) and replace that.

Froyn,

Buy the entire keyboard.
Then return it for "missing the E key".
Who ships a keyboard without the E?

Harpsist,

No no. It’s a laptop. And it broke. Still have it some where.

Froyn,

My comment still stands.
Instead of paying $20 for a single key. Pay $100 for the entire replacement keyboard. Remove the E key from the keyboard, then return the keyboard stating the letter E was missing when you received it. When they get it back, they'll refund your $100 and your issue is solved.

I hummed hawed on this over the past few years to finally end up in the pixel watch 2, being sold on getting workout, sleep and general heartrate metrics.

Chakravanti, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

No.

@IonAddis honeydew melon.

RBWells, in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

Nuts have a lot of calories in a small package, and as a migraneuse I can also verify that nuts and dried cherries are one of the least offensive things to deal with if you end up puking. If you have miso, miso soup is easy and gentle and tasty.

But mostly make sure you are drinking water with electrolytes. Your body can survive well without food calories for quite some time, and lack of appetite when sick may be a signal to fast and rest. Dehydration is much more likely and much more damaging.

Krzd, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?

Hybrid watch. Still has the hands for manual time reading but in the middle is an eInk display for notifications. I have to charge it about every 3.5 weeks which is amazing. (Fossil gen 6 Hybrid)

3migo, in Do you prefer to wear a smartwatch or a regular watch?
@3migo@lemmy.world avatar

Regular watch.

I find myself bombarded by notifications all day anyways, I don’t also want my wrist buzzing along with my pocket. Since I work from home, I have my phone out on my desk most of the time anyways, smartwatch doesn’t really add any value for me as I don’t care about the fitness data.

I’m also a watch enthusiast, so smartwatches don’t scratch that same itch as a traditional watch.

Gallardo994, (edited ) in What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

Chikhirtma is an awesome Georgian soup with cheese and all. Super awesome when you’re sick.

P. S. Also great if you’re hungover
