A little cat iron puck was introduced in an Asian region with high iron-deficiecy in the poorer population, but nobody used it. So they did some research and changed it to resemble a fish instead and it took right off. Turns out the local culture considered fish lucky or something.
I actually teach my students about this strategy that the WHO employee in Micronesia in my sport nutrition class. It’s less about the iron fish, and more about that dietary iron can come from cast iron cooking sources instead of supplementation (as the latter often causes digestive distress).
I saw someone do a demonstration once, they took a box of "iron-fortified" breakfast cereal, dumped it into a bowl, then ran a magnet through it. The magnet picked up some of the dust from the bottom of the bowl, that dust being the tiny iron particles that were added to the cereal to "fortify" it.
put the ‘‘words’’ in quotes because in context it’s definitely ‘‘absurd bullshit’’ and this is how i know that key on my keyboard doesn’t work i have to use a different key so thanks
Tiny amounts of iron distributed throughout a piece of cereal don’t have enough of a magnetic charge to lift the weight of a piece of cereal. Pieces of cereal dust with higher concentrations of iron very much could. Those results aren’t especially surprising
How is it “absurd bullshit”? Do you think it’s somehow a different element? At worst, it’s as bullshit as any other vitamin supplement, in that it’s technically helpful, but just far more than your body can make use of.
I put them in quotes as the word has no objective meaning as applied to a breakfast cereal, it's simply a marketing term. I did not intend to imply that ingested iron particles are not a valid source of iron for human biology.
When you do the metaphorical moderation equivalent of running somebody over with your car, just return to acting to normal, no one will care and everyone will quietly suspect the guy in the metaphorical hospital making accusations regardless of how much the metaphorical tire tracks match.
There are better ways of containing your dog. Like an actual fence. Don't cause your dog pain for your own convenience. They don't even keep the dog in, a good run up, for example if they are being chased by something, they can be outside before they feel anything and then unable to return home.
This may be true for some breeds, but not for huskies. At the animal shelter, several people told me that they get many husky strays, because the dig under or hop over fences. They all, separately, recommended that I use an electric fence. Not believing them, and since I don’t like electric fences, I asked the vet, who said the same thing. I asked about a tall fence, but the vet urged me to get an electric fence. For other dog breeds, a fence is good enough. For huskies, a fence will not work long-term.
E: the vet also recommended a tether, since I don’t like electric fences. But I can’t bring myself to tether him. What if he gets wrapped up in something and gets hurt or killed? I won’t risk that.
You can't bring yourself to tether him but electrocution is just fine?? That makes no sense.
Huskies are escape artists, they will get out of nearly anything eventually if left to their own devices, including an electric fence, you need to supervise them. A fence with a top that leans in is the best method.
Can I suggest you go to a different shelter? There is no way that an electric fence is better for dogs who escape frequently than an actual fence.
What you need to do is get an actual, tall, fence and maintain it. They sell hardware that you hammer into the ground to help prevent the dog from escaping - dig defender is the big brand name I think.
The electric fence is the “easy” way out that doesn’t actually solve the issue. My parents neighbor has an electric fence and quite frequently their neighbors dog ends up in their yard when he shouldn’t have been stopped by the fence. He’s a great dog and my parents enjoy him but still.
If you want to prevent the dog from escaping, you need to take the responsibility of the fence and maintaining it.
They have emotional support. It can be friends, therapy, groups, or bare minimum some personal resources that they can access if things get rough. It’s impossible to be someone’s only support. They will drag you down with them.
To add to that- they have a positive and receptive view of therapy.
Soylent came out about when I was having surgeries for Crohns and I used it at stages where I was healthy enough to bulk. I’ve been in remission for years but it’s still pretty hard to gain weight so I keep Soylents around to pack extra calories in. Use it as a coffee creamer too, surprisingly it froths really well. Also add it to oatmeal.
Also eating complete garbage food is better than nothing, I’ve made that tradeoff many times. Salt fat and sugar cater to what we naturally crave.
