meco03211, in Why don't public restroom stalls have OPEN/OCCUPIED indicators like porta potties do?

In the US just peer through the crack between the door and the wall. Ensure solid eye contact with the current occupant. Determine how much time they’ve left. Adjust plan accordingly.

CaptainBlagbird,
@CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world avatar

You shouldn’t do that.

The doors are deliberately designed to have a large gap on the bottom, so you can poke your head through. This is the correct way of doing it.

Cold_Brew_Enema,

I always reach under the stalls to grab their ankles. Scaring the shit out of them speeds things up

The most literal case of scaring the shit out of someone.

macrocephalic,

I’m pretty sure that would show me down. I’d have to spend half an hour wiping after pinching it off with that clench.

cynar, in Where on the globe would you best be able to sail a very large ship without being detected?

It depends what you are hiding from. If you want to avoid notice from random encounters, you would want to head out to sea. So long as you’re over the horizon from any shipping lanes, you’re as close to invisible as you can get.

If your goal is to evade an active military search, you want clutter, and a lot of it. Military radar can sweep vast areas quickly. Satellites can spot ships at sea, so long as the sky is clear enough. Islands and coastline can mess with these however. Get into an out of the way bay, and throw up camo netting, and your ship is now just another bit of rock to the satellites, and it’s part of the noise to radar. The cost of this cover is that it is also attractive to random tourist boats, or fishing boats.

@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

These are some very good questions!

The camo netting wouldn’t work on a ship this size.

So let’s say the ship isn’t being searched for but is actively trying not to be spotted on accident or by anyone.

The protagonist won’t have any nearby land to get to.

modeler,

The camo netting wouldn’t work on a ship this size.

I think it probably could: youtu.be/9DSwXZ1esBQ?si=5SRwisQQo4pgRBh3

Other people kinda already said it, but try to find a martial art which is more focused on self-defense and that should reduce the risk of training injury.

I played American football for 4 years, then got a computer science degree and am now a professional software engineer. I definitely took some blows to the head but thankfully never any concussions. You can do it.

Australia checking in, those are definitely a thing here

Agent641,

Its super awkward when youre too busy unlatching your ground harness to connect your toilet harness that you forget to lock the door, and some cobber walks in and sees you hanging there with your dick and balls out, pooping into the void of space.

Boris_NotTooBadinoff, in How to combine sports and study?

Instead of kickboxing you could try splitting your time between running, and strength training. Cardio will help with the sedentary nature of university course work, and strength training (weight lifting) will provide greater muscle control and definition. As long as you don’t over do either, you should be able to defend yourself, and your loved ones, while remaining fit and healthy. These are also good habits to develop so that you can continue after your time at your university is complete…just my .02

mangosloth, in Why don't public restroom stalls have OPEN/OCCUPIED indicators like porta potties do?

Yeah here in Japan most places have a red and blue indicator that moves with the lock. Bidets and toilet seat sanitizers are also pretty standard in any decently modernized areas. We kinda win when it comes to bathrooms.

Waker,

Just got back from Japan. I’m always surprised when I’m in the middle of nowhere and the public restrooms have heated sitting, deodorizer, bidet, background sounds. Like… Wtf? That’s better than my toilet at home. And I’m not even from the US 🙃

OhFudgeBars, in Why don't public restroom stalls have OPEN/OCCUPIED indicators like porta potties do?

How hard is it to press on the stall door and if it doesn’t open, just move on to the next?

morphballganon, in Where on the globe would you best be able to sail a very large ship without being detected?

I suspect the motive of the protagonist will affect the answer to your question. What are they doing out there? If the goal is to catch fish, for example, maybe don’t go somewhere with no fish, right?

BroBot9000,
@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

I’m really trying to be reserved with the details as much as possible right now but I do want to try to fill in a few blanks.

You’re quite close with the current working opening where the protagonist is indeed out fishing.

Hence why I was holding back a bit from setting it in the arctic.

rustymitt, (edited ) in Where on the globe would you best be able to sail a very large ship without being detected?

I don’t think the north and south poles have much satellite coverage due to how orbits work, so maybe in the arctic or antarctic oceans, but they’re pretty treacherous, so probably somewhere in the Pacific or southern Indian oceans?

BroBot9000,
@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

Those seem the most recommended.

I’ll have to look up what the coral situation in the South Indian Ocean is like.

LegionEris, in Anyone on here know where all the conspiracy people hang out?

Not of the aliens gave Martha Washington the technology to become impregnated by the Bigfoot variety, but there are always plenty of conspiracies on Hexbear. It’s wild how deep into history revision and denial some people will go to justify believing fairly reasonable things.

lntl, in Where on the globe would you best be able to sail a very large ship without being detected?
@lntl@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Most of the ocean you won’t be detected in. There’s just nobody looking for anyone out there. So stay away from eezs and littoral zones and you ll be alone in no time.

carbonprop, in Where on the globe would you best be able to sail a very large ship without being detected?

Maybe some place off the coast of Antarctica? It’s got a very low population of researchers. You could probably find a fairly hidden bay or harbour to park in.

BroBot9000,
@BroBot9000@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a strong contender. Could also possibly be a gameplay mechanic with the outside of the ship being freezing and holes possibly let that cold in.

Overall I’m leaning more towards it being set in warmer waters for the sake of some elements like being able to coral dive in the surrounding waters for potential puzzle solutions.

Vox, in What MMOs are you all playing?

I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 14 for about 3 years now and got my partner into it a year ago, we both highly recommend it even if it’s just to experience the main story.

The community tends to be pretty active, there’s a lot of roleplay as well as end-game raiders. The lore is the biggest reason to play imo, it’s a hundreds of hours long adventure that has made me laugh, cry, and feel genuine empathy for some of the characters I’ve met. PvP exists but it’s not super competitive. PvE on the other hand is split into dungeons, trials, and raids. Dungeons are classic MMO dungeons with trash mobs and a couple bosses, trials are just a big boss, and raid tiers are 4 separate boss fights with the last one having a 2nd phase. There’s also different difficulties of content, but you do the normal version first during the main story or side quests.
