Fall down seven times, stand up eight times.

cam_i_am, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

“You’ll feel better in the morning.”

I get a lot of intrusive, negative, catastrophising thoughts late at night. Worrying about things I would never worry about during daylight.

I always try to tell myself: don’t think about this stuff right now, it’s not helpful. Put it aside and if it still feels important in the morning then you can do something about it. Fixating on it right now serves no useful purpose.

smigao, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

The whole book of Ecclesiastes

serennis, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

Don’t worry about things you can’t change.

banana_meccanica, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

“I am already dead” and “They are not your friends”

graycube, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

"One day at a time. One hour at a time. Let's just get through this one little task."

Annoyed_Crabby, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

“it’s okay, just keep swimming”. That’s really what i always tell myself.

peto, in Do you have a mantra that keeps you going through tough times?

“I am here, I move forward.” Might do for you. Say it, take the time to see where you are and what you can do next. Even a small improvement is valid, just make sure you move and don’t dwell on things you can’t control.

Best of luck.

GenesisJones, in What's your weird physical habit?

Oh man, I recently found out not everyone wipes 💩 the way I do and I’m convinced everyone else is crazy. They gotta be walking around with dooty cheeks all day.

Also, I constantly flick my big toes against my second toe making a small raspy snap whenever I’m barefoot and sitting.

daddyjones,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

How do you wipe?

bingbong,

Brillo pad

Gimpydude,

I want to know too, but also I really don’t.

bakachu, in What's your weird physical habit?

During the cold season, I will give all metal door knobs and door handles a little whack first with my hand before grabbing. I hate the static shock that may or may not be waiting and the whack absorbs it in a way I can anticipate it.

I thought this would be more common but I don’t really see anyone else doing it.

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

I sometimes earth myself by touching a wall before touching my laptop, because that’s where I get most static electricity shocks.

XbSuper,

Ground, you ground yourself.

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

Sorry, English is not my native tongue. Thank you for the tip.

bionicjoey,

I do something similar. By whacking it (lol) my hand has enough momentum that the muscle twitch caused by the shock can’t overcome my hand’s movement, meaning it doesn’t jerk back uncomfortably.

bakachu,

Yep that’s exactly the thought process behind it lol. I’ve walked into and out of a couple interviews doing this because the alternative is usually the hand recoil plus an “ow fuck”.

guyrocket,
@guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I do similar with the screw on the cover plate for my light switch in my bedroom. I swipe it to discharge the static electricity.

serpineslair,

I have a dressing gown that builds up static electricity very easily. The chair in my room has metal legs therefore when I walk past it I tap my foot on it to get rid of any electricity.

bakachu,

If its just one item that shocks you, I wonder if there’s a permanent solution like taping dryer sheets to the legs or something.

serpineslair,

Nah I shock myself on purpose so that I don’t shock myself multiple times when taking off the dressing gown, plus I’ve realised that getting a shock through your foot doesn’t hurt at all when compared to being shocked anywhere else.

scytale,

I do this as well, especially in the office, where it happens all the time, not just during cold months. Every time I touch a door knob or elevator button, I get shocked. So I kinda slap it first with the back of my hand before I touch anything metal.

Zorcron,

Similarly, I started always reaching out of my car to touch the outside paint above the door when climbing out of the car to prevent a static shock from rubbing against the sheet and discharging when I close the door.

waterbogan, in Dear Lemmings, what is your personal approach to human diet?

I try to eat a lot of vegtables and some fruit because I like those, and a minimum of meat, dairy etc. Basically only eat meat when someone else cooks it for me. Dont like anything really sweet or really salty, and dont eat stuff like bacon, salami, ham etc because I dont like it anyway. Eat quite a lot of wholegrain bread because I like it

Mostly just eat what I like in moderation it just so happens I dislike a lot of unhealthy stuff (except biscuits/ cookies) and like a lot of healthy stuff, so I dont really have a “system” as such, just preferences. Also dont drink alcohol

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

except biscuits/ cookies

How do you deal this your love for cookies? I imagine cookies is probably one of the most dangerous weaknesses to have. Especially chocolate cookies with chocolate chips I would find difficult to pass on and probably would go through an entire display if enough milk was available. 😈

waterbogan,

I stop at 2-3. Also I’m not that keen on chocolate unless its very dark chocolate, I like chocolate that is about the same colour as bitumen. I prefer biscuits with fruit/ nuts. I also have with strong, black unsweetened tea

rafa, in How can a naturally anxious person keep from worrying while laid up in bed with a broken ankle and leg?

Benzodiazepines 😋

Appoxo, in hey - trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox, what are your recommended extensions and/or quality of life addins, etc?
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Ublock Origin
Enhanced Steam
TWP - Translate Wep Pages (works better than the native chrome version)
ytc filter (Youtube live chat filter. When general chat becomes spammy)
Tabliss (Better version of the chrome start page)
Camelizer (Amazon price history)
Return YT Dislike
Dark Reader (How could I forget that…)
Bitwarden (or password manager of your choice)

Suck_on_my_Presence,

Seconding Tabliss. It’s gorgeous and totally customizable

SirToxicAvenger,

Enhanced Steam

thanks! twp looks interesting!

Appoxo,
@Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

My pleasure.

I even feel like TWP works better then the now native Firefox translation feature solely due to it allowing to translate any page by either selecting text and right clicking or by clicking on the icon in the adress bar.
Firefox has the button as well but TWP let’s you choose the translation service (I believe it’s google, deepl and 1 or 2 other services)

greywolf0x1,

Firefox now has it’s own inbuilt local translator. None of your information is sent collected and translation is very good.

Pons_Aelius, in Fellow Lemmings, how to create Social Media that does not have mods?

Fellow Lemmings how can we create social media were the users are king/queen?

I doubt you can. Every forum I have been involved with that tried this quickly descended into a shitshow.

It is the tragedy of the commons every time.

post Scriptum: just having a voting mechanism, might be gamed by unsavory charcters or groups to game such a system, unless voting requires your clear name id, which comes with other issues of course.

This does little, to nothing. Even when you have to put you account id to a vote it does nothing to people who want to be disruptive and if you can create multiple accounts (which you can here...), vote bombing will happen.

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

I doubt you can

I am convinced it must be possible: The public square doesn’t have moderators. I want to recreate the public square online, I suspect this is mostly a technical problem.

I also see no reason why there couldn’t be a way for the community itself to deal with disruptive actors through some mechanism that does not put any sole individual in power.

Moobythegoldensock,

The public square doesn’t have moderators.

It does and always has. In most jurisdictions, this function is performed by police.

Pons_Aelius,

The public square doesn’t have moderators.

Yes it does and it always has. There has always been social group control in the public square

I also see no reason why there couldn’t be a way for the community itself to deal with disruptive actors through some mechanism that does not put any sole individual in power.

Cool. then create you own lemmy instance and run it the way you want.

Good luck.

one question, if the majority of the accounts on your instance vote to allow CSAM, what will you do?

While you may be an anarchist, someone (you, as the one running the instance) will be legally responsible.

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

Cool. then create you own lemmy instance and run it the way you want.

that is the point I don’t want it to run how “I” want but it should be ran however the community as a whole wants it to.

I think you are misunderstanding my question.

This is not a social issue but a technical one.

If you have votes, they can be trivially rigged by somebody creating a number of sock puppet accounts. If anybody can just do how they please, unsavory characters will flood the site with aweful content. If you require ID or a phone number (those can both be faked) then you just introduce a whole other set of issues, by basically doxing everybody to the people who run the site, and by extension the powers that be.

I feel this problem requires cryptography of some sort and the ability to establish identity for users without de-anonymizing them. idk if that makes sense to you

Pons_Aelius,

I feel this problem requires cryptography of some sort and the ability to establish identity for users without de-anonymizing them. idk if that makes sense to you

Sorry, but that is laughable.

You want people to be both responsible and anonymous at the same time.

You are dreaming.

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

I upvoted you, But sometimes dreams come true, if you make them.

I do not believe this to be laughable at all. We are faced with a problem: Online discourse is the rule, the public square is a thing of the past (as private entities encroach on it) -> if all online places are ruled with an iron fist by sometimes benevolent sometimes maliscious tyrants, we can kiss free speech good bye.

This problem demands a solution. There is nothing laughable about this. ridicule me all you want but I know I am on to something.

Dienervent,

If what you're looking for is a decentralized pseudonymous system. Then this is absolutely possible with today's cryptography.

It's called public-private keys. You create a private key that you can use to "sign" your messages. And people can verify that is was you that wrote the message by using the public key.

No one can pretend to be you because only you have access to your private key and the public key can't be used to find out what the private key is.

It's still anonymous because you don't have to say who you are when you create the private key.

It's not perfect because the same person can create as many different keys as they want. So you can't really "ban" someone. They'll just create a new key and pretend to be someone new.

Bluetreefrog,

This is the beauty of the Fediverse. Don’t like the mods, start a new community. If yours is better then people will come.

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t like the mods

That is exactly the issue, I love the mods and all other users, this is not that I take issue with any specific individual. The underlying technical issue is not resolved as far as i know. How to determin community will without it being prone to abuse, tempering/manipulation or even outright sabotage (for example from rightwing groups like stormfront).

willya,
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Whoever runs the hardware would be the one(s) in power automatically.

BigBlackCockroach,

what if it was peer to peer? basically ever user contributing with their own hardware, like in bittorrent.
