I used to use Liftoff, I changed to Jerboa when my instance upgraded to 0.19.

It has dark mode, landscape, and support for multiple accounts. It’s open-source if that’s the kind of thing that tickles your fancy. Also, it’s by the same dev as lemmy itself so compatibility shouldn’t be an issue going forward.

cmeu,

I actually like liftoff… tried jerboa based on open source / non monetization principles - thanks for the tip

____, in Other than Lemmy, what are you doing tonight?

My wife has a procedure Monday that requires me to get her there.

Tonight, a couple of beers. Then I stay up as needed.

She kept me sorted out when I had a procedure, I’ll do the same for her.

Wait, what’s happening? I’m using liftoff and obviously out of the loop.

Evkob,

Hasn’t been updated since the summer, and doesn’t work with versions 0.19 of lemmy or newer. I heard the dev had twins, which yeah fair enough take all the time off your open source lemmy app.

anon6789,
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

Dev hasn’t posted in 4 months, I think he had twins, so he’s off enjoying that.

Without being around to keep the app working as Lemmy updates, it’s gonna stop working one day.

Lemmy 0.19 sounds like a big update and has a lot of new features that a non updated app won’t be able to handle, hence today’s announcement by the Lemmy.World crew why they’ve been waiting so long to roll it out since they’re the biggest instance and don’t wanna catch users by surprise having apps not work or major problems pop up.

That’s my understanding of the situation anyway. Some details me be not exactly right, but close enough.

Creazle,
@Creazle@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, right on, thanks for the info. Guess I’ll go see what jerboa is like nowadays

daddyjones,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

Good for him and his twins, but it’s a shame. I’ve tried lots of different lemmy apps and haven’t liked any of them except liftoff so far…

It took me a lot of testing apps, but I find Connect or Boost best for lurking, as I find them the prettiest UI.

Summit I love for posting due to having the best feature set, and the UI is there with the best of them as far as customizations, but I just can’t get it to look quite as polished as Connect or Boost.

Sync I kept around for a while to, but it didn’t have the feel I was used to with Liftoff.

anon6789, in Liftoff alternative
@anon6789@lemmy.world avatar

I went from Liftoff to a few others, but I’m really feeling at home in Summit.

It’s pretty good as is and the dev is very responsive and updates fairly often with improvements and keeps an ongoing roadmap of future updates.

Connect was good and better looking then Liftoff or Summit, but I post every day and make some really long posts, and Summit just has awesome features and a pretty good workflow for that.

Boost has finally fixed its post UI to be useful. I used this for Reddit, so I originally started on Liftoff for Lemmy since I expected it to be a Boost copycat.

Sync was ok but not for me.

Landscape works in Summit, and I run in Dark Mode. Says it supports multiple accounts, but I haven’t tried, I spend all my time on one instance anymore.

Had a ton of settings and everything is pretty customizable. I’m very happy here after 5 months on Liftoff.

I’m currently trying Summit and it looks very familliar. Testing it.

Anticorp, in Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?

I enjoy them. They’re usually quite creative, and I’m constantly amazed at what the technology can accomplish. I frequently forget that I can turn to DALL-E when I want pictures of specific things, and those posts remind me.

GBU_28, in What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

“billionaires” wouldn’t be so bad if they just:

  • paid the taxes expected, with no shenanigans
  • were obligated to activate their cash in the economy. No hording, get that cash moving through the economy.
EdyBolos,

Also if they didn’t exploit their workers and paid them fairly.

moistclump,

But then they wouldn’t be a billionaire!

GBU_28,

Sure, if they are explicitly running a business

Iceblade02,

I’d make personal asset-backed debt above a certain amount per capita taxable. The real reason they pay so little tax is that they never actually realize their assets - they just borrow against them, and all that debt is then slowly deleted through inflation.

So, when they use asset-backed debt instead of income - tax it.

Anticorp, (edited ) in Looking for 2000s movie about gang?

ChatGPT is really good for these kinds of questions. Here’s what it said:

The movie you’re describing sounds like “Harsh Times” (2005), directed by David Ayer. It stars Christian Bale as Jim Davis, a troubled ex-soldier who gets involved in various criminal activities in Los Angeles. In one scene, Jim is approached by two gang members who rob him, leading to a series of violent events involving rival gangs. The film explores themes of crime, violence, and the challenges faced by veterans returning from war. “Harsh Times” is known for its gritty portrayal of street life in LA and intense performances, particularly by Bale.

Is it a good movie? It sounds good and Bale is always awesome in his roles.

I do that routine of keeping worn out clothes and I’ll wear the whole set to get dirty/muddy/damaged/radioactive/whatever. I’ll go ahead and get the crap clothes all dirty and sweaty, then just chuck 'em.

Or, I have been known to cut worn out T-shirts into rags, and I’ve scrubbed the bathtub with worn out socks.

antlion, in What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?
@antlion@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I don’t think the crazy taxes need to be on obscene wealth itself, but on the very lavish and wasteful things people do with that wealth, things that have a very real impact to the rest of society.

For example, private jets or even private chartered flights should have some very steep taxes to offset the cost of all the FAA employees and stuff at all the small airports, all the carbon emissions, and everything.

Yachts, and very large properties also come to mind. Like total square feet of living space of all real estate owned - once it crosses like 10,000 sq ft the annual taxes just get higher and higher. For example 10k-20k sq ft costs $1/sq ft annually, 20k-40k costs $5/sq ft, etc.

echo64,

They barely spend money on these things, it’s worth understanding what billionaire really means. You could levey hundred percent taxes on these things and billionaires wouldn’t even notice

jonne, (edited )

And yet they go through great lengths to make sure those things aren’t taxed the way other things are. In fact, they’re tax deductable: propublica.org/…/private-jets-yachts-wealthy-tax-… .

If they didn’t care about spending extra, stuff like that wouldn’t make it into laws.

Being wealthy is cheap in a lot of ways, in the same way that being poor is expensive.

echo64,

yes because they employ tax avoidance people in general and they make more money paying those people to avoid tax all over the place than if they were taxed so it’s a net gain.

to be clear, they don’t even know they are lobbying for tax on these things to be low. their people do it.

and again, to be clear, it’s not the money we care about, its the other 995 million that we should be focusing on nixing.

zettajon, in What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?
@zettajon@lemdro.id avatar

Tax any loans using stocks as collateral. If they try to hide their wealth through an LLC, subject that LLC to a high wealth/business tax as well. Go full scorched earth on all billionaires.

____, in Anyone else do "last chance socks"?

Think the DSM term for that is “harmless self-delusion” bc ain’t nobody throwing that sock away. Goes in the laundry hamper, and we repeat the ciiircle of…. Oh wait. You know what i mean.

linearchaos,
@linearchaos@lemmy.world avatar

There was a time, years ago when I was a bachelor and had more disposable income than I had any idea what to do with. I decided which brand of sock I liked and I bought 50 pairs at least. I threw away every pair of white socks I owned. I had a good solid run, 50 days of brand new socks. I did an entire laundry run a little bleach and 49 pairs of socks. I got him out of the dryer there I was with 47 pairs of socks. If any of the socks got a hole or a serious stain I had so many of them I just threw them away no regrets. They were all the same socks so it didn’t matter if I lost one. Eventually through magic sock demons and probably some washer and dryer attrition, The horde dwindled. I got down into the '30s. They were starting to get a little ragged. I eventually went and bought another couple packs. I don’t feel bad about torching socks though It’s my guilty pleasure.

cryostars,

Yes!! This is the way. It’s so nice to have a ton of matching socks and not running out of clean ones frequently. I do the same with underwear and have found that I end up having to do laundry way less frequently using this strat

Arrested Development

const_void, in What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

Convince them to take a trip to see the Titanic…

ani, in How do I stop a crush from developing further?

Tell her. Then she likely rejects your feelings, and you distance yourself from her to kill the feelings.

pete_the_cat,

That would most likely make being in the class awkward as well.

ani, (edited )

Lol that’s not even close to real awkwardness of letting romantic feelings develop to crazy levels and end up friendzoned or worse. We need to be men and avoid falling a victim to our own naivety.

Also, that’s also why I said to distance from her, which includes not taking classes with her anymore.

pete_the_cat,

What if it’s the only dance class in the area?

victorz,

This is what I was thinking.

Either she rejects and that’s a big turn off for the very obvious reason of her not wanting to be with OP (or it should be), or she accepts and it could be great. Nothing to lose.

ani,

Yeah that’s based on this Doctor’s talk on avoiding friendzone www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtkL40jRLvU

I learned this the hard way and it hurts a lot still

nawa, (edited )

Yeah. It’s super scary but it’s really the most optimal route. I fell in love with a friend, told her, she said she doesn’t feel the same way but we still remain friends and after a period of awkwardness it got back to the way it was before. We live in different parts of the world most of the year so nothing would really change one way or another, but still, it was easier to get things out in the open.

Just should tell her in a non-creepy casual way and it should be fine.
