edit: meant in general, not just amazon, added other

Any site you go with, I would make sure to triple check labels, reviews, warranty of laptop and the one offered by website.

Maybe more expensive, but warranty for a year, Newegg/Amazon/other also has some, and the one you mentioned.

Random search brought up Newegg:

NOTE: There are 3 different batteries for your Dell laptop model and they are NOT compatible, please compare your original battery with our photos to make sure it can fit. Type: Lithium-Ion Technology Voltage: Fit 7.6V Dell laptop Capacity: High Performance 62Wh Cell: Premium Quality 4-Cell Warranty: Full One Year Compatibility: 100% compatible with specific laptop models, ensuring a perfect fit and seamless performance. CE and RoHS Certification: Certification ensures that the battery complies with safety and environmental standards Long-Term Reliability: Our batteries are engineered for durability, with a focus on maintaining consistent performance over time.

otter,

Yea Dell machines can refuse third party batteries even if they’re physically identical

It’s worth checking for that

I’ve thought of using Amazon, but it’s not really a thing in my country, I don’t even know if they ship here, furthermore I’ve never shopped on Amazon before, so I have no idea how it works…

(I just checked, Amazon does not deliver to my country and Newegg is an American thing afaik)

And even further more, I don’t know which are the “trusted” replacement battery manufacturers

sock, in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

religion exists because people are scared of admitting the thing they devoted their life too is fake and used to exploit you.

it only causes war, inequality, hate crimes, etc

positives from religion? you get the hope that you might go to heaven and do nothing forever (seriously whats your plan after heaven). OR you burn in hell if you make a mistake. oh and you get a specific yet contradictory moral compass to abide to except its interpreted to hate gays instead of pedophiles.

i hate religion, but i think religion should get the treatment the religious right give to the lgbt. religion should NEVER be acknowledged or practiced outside of personal closed doors. i never want to hear about it and it shouldnt influence anything ever. the different between lgbt and christians? christianity is a choice.

LifeOfChance,

No it isn’t. They’re trying to make it a place to ask genuine question not to just goof off with silly things. They’re just defining it a little more which is absolutely necessary.

intensely_human,

It is absolutely not necessary to define it a little more. It’s okay to not have control.

voracitude, (edited ) in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

Ah, young grasshopper. You are now discovering the ways of the world. It is not enough simply to be right; one must be cool about it, too. Which unfortunately means not getting pissed off that the other person is talking bullshit, because that only makes whoever you’re talking to double down, no matter how pants-on-head their point is.

As to what is wrong with them and why: pride, and embarrassment.

It’s a cliche and also very hard advice to follow, but it’s true that the best thing to do is smile and walk away. Know that they know you know they’re wrong and an idiot, and take comfort in it.

Edit: It’s very hard. I struggle with it every day, including yesterday, and today. Just gotta keep trying, we’ll get it eventually, right?

I’m not tho. 😤

You’re wrong about that. 😉

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble, in Best place to buy replacement parts for a laptop?

Brand new: Dell

Used: eBay

I wouldn’t expect an aliexpress battery to make it longer than a year. Buy a good condition used OEM part instead.

Presi300,
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

The thing is… the “OEM” Dell replacement batteries have a ridiculous price… they’re like 2 or 3 times more expensive than 3rd party ones for a refurbished one…

fuckwit_mcbumcrumble,

There’s a reason why they cost that much. If it costs 2x as much but lasts 5x as long then what’s the better value?

I’ve never gotten a chinese knockoff battery that comes even close to the same endurance as an OEM battery. Even used ones will last longer on a charge and hold their capacity longer than knockoffs. Plus you don’t run the risk of the batteries expanding and causing a fire.

phanto, in I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school.

There are a lot of good sellers of corporate leasebacks out there… A five year old ThinkPad is going to kick butt over anything new with a Celeron. I’m a student, and I got an MSI workstation with an i7-9750H, 16GB RAM, 256GB NVME, and a garbage battery for 250$ CAD. That’s less than 200$ USD.

7u5k3n,

Came here to say this… eBay and a refurbished Thinkpad. Hell a refurb dell.

As long as it’s a corp leased device it’ll be fine.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

We can’t do a garbage battery. She really likes to do some of her schoolwork out at a cafe or somewhere else away from home. That’s one of the reasons I am thinking something new would be better. But if you can get something like that with a good battery, it would be perfect.

Cort,

At that price, buying a 2nd battery becomes an option as well, so long as it’s user replaceable

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Those cheap ones don’t look like they have replaceable parts from the pictures.

CurbsTickle,

They aren’t talking about the cheap ones you’re seeing that are new.

They are talking about the off lease laptops. Many of the business grade laptops have user replaceable batteries - literally a slide switch to release.

Sometimes you have to cut your losses and leave a conversation. If it’s some rando on the internet, just walk away and try not to care what they think.

With people you know and respect, you’re gonna have to hunker down for the long haul. Remember, if you come off like a jerk, they’re going to be less likely to accept your argument. Be respectful of their position but ask probing questions. Let them see for themselves that they’re wrong.

intensely_human,

if you come off like a jerk, they’re going to be less likely to accept your argument

Very true. Lots of people attempt to package two messages together:

  • You’re wrong about this
  • You’re worthless

Quite frankly, people should reject the second message, and people who try to package the first with the second should expect listeners to reject the whole package.

Honestly it’s probably better for people to reject that whole package of messages than to accept it, even if it means being wrong, because at least they won’t be taking that toxicity into their soul.

Someone who goes around trying to convey those messages together, to be accepted as a package, is themselves doing it wrong.

Hillock, in I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school.

The best advice here is to just not buy new. You can get a refurbished laptop from trusted sellers that will definitely exceed the requirements for under $200. If you are willing to spend up to $300 then there is literally no concerns.

For example here is a DELL Latitude 7490 Laptop Intel Core i5 8th Gen 8250U (1.60GHz) 16GB Memory 256 GB SSD Intel UHD Graphics 620 14.0" Windows 10 Pro for $192 on Newegg.

https://www.newegg.com/dell-latitude-7490-work-business/p/N82E16834833592?item=N82E16834833592

If you don't like Newegg there are tons of other stores that offer refurbished laptops. I assume you are in the USA and stores you can consider are Target, Walmart, Best buy.

There is very little risk with refurbished laptops. They are usually tested before being shipped out and if you buy from a legit company they usually offer some kind of store warranty. Walmart for example offers a 90 day return policy for any reason.

It's hard to make suggestions on which laptop to get since availability plays a bigger role here. So just look around at your desired budget and pick what you think your kid needs.

If you think your kid won't accept a laptop that has a scratch, simply look for "As New". Then there usually aren't any visible damages. But if you are fine with some cosmetic damage you can get real bargains.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Will the battery be okay? That’s my biggest concern with something like that.

Hillock,

Generally yes. Some refurbished laptops are literally brand new and have never been used before. And if there is an issue, you just return it and try out a different one.

Depending on the model, you can also just buy a replacement battery and it can still be cheaper than anything comparable new.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Great! That’s the sort of advice I was hoping to hear, so thank you. She won’t care about a scratch or a scuff or whatever. Even if she does, she’s not the one paying for it and she’s 13, so she’ll have to take what she can get. Again, I really appreciate it!

jacktherippah, in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

We’re not wrong OP, you’re wrong!!! Right, guys?

Lnrdrople, in I need advice on getting a cheap notebook for my daughter for online school.

4GB ram with Windows11 is going to be practically unusable. Even for Windows 7 4GB would be rough just for basic browsing and Zoom. Installing older Windows on a laptop is possible and generally pretty easy, but you might to check there win7 drivers available for the hardware. I don’t think it’s worth it with laptop specs you provided though.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

What should I look for in terms of RAM for a Windows 10 notebook? Others are suggesting refurbs. Looks like some 8gb and 16gb refurbs at NewEgg are within our price range.

Lnrdrople,

8GB is OK for browsing, zoom and such, but if there’s 16GB (or even 12GB) option that’s in the price range, I would personally go with that. Otherwise you would want it come with SSD, not HDD, rest of the specs shouldn’t really matter for your use case. Unlikely that there would be much if any HDD options anyway, but mentioning it just in case.
