For your fish, maybe try aquariums@lemmy.world

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I’m already there but I feel my question about swim bladder issues may be a bit too niche, ezpecilly when I’ve covered the basic treatment of raising temps, treatment with salt and flushing their systems with peas after starving them for a few days.

athos77,

Well, the only way you'll know if it's too niche is by asking and seeing what the responses are. If posting on lemmy doesn't get you enough information, you might try posting on reddit, they bring the information back here tob possibly help others in similar situations. I mean, I've left reddit, but if my cat's health was potentially at risk, I'd ask anyplace I could get a decent answer.

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll give it a try

I had some decent communities on reddit and Facebook but I too have deleted my account on reddit and haven’t used Facebook since they asked for payment for untargeted ads

I may go back in if needed but I believe that there are a few discord communities too that are quite active and knowledgeable

YoorWeb,

You may be doing too much, let the water stabilise. Is your filtration sufficient, on the other hand is the filter not too strong for the tank volume?

cosmicrookie,
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! I did get some good pointers over at the aquarium community

lemmy.world/post/9636595

I’ll trey to change less water and see if that helps. We have no chlorine in the tapwater here, but I suspect the change still may be causing the issue.

My two tanks are 920 lit (190gal) and 530 lit (140 gal) so I can’t really let water age before I do the water change. It would require too much space

YoorWeb,

Glad you found some answers. I may have a bit of old school approach but fish are usually happier in a stable environment, the less you change things the better. I was never a fan of using additives until they’re needed. Purigen in the filter, some Melafix / Pimafix if things went downhill. The water will age if you make small water changes. With large water changes you flush out the beneficial bacteria and while you still have them in your filter, they will need time to repopulate in new water. Shrimps are great cleaners if you don’t mind them and if your fish can tolerate them, they will need hard water and some minerals added every now and then to help with molting.

cosmicrookie, (edited )
@cosmicrookie@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! I have a pretty solid grasp on the chemistry of fish tanks and I don’t think bacteria are free swimmers. This is also quite evident when I do the large water changes, as the rate at wich the bacteria still break down ammonia and nitrite seems the same.

Even though I am not concerned for the bacteria as such, and actually not at all concerned for the nitrogen cycle at large, there might be other circumstances with fresh water that may be affecting the most sensitive of the fish. I am considering apilitting the tanks into hardy and sensitive fish and experimenting with smaller and more frequent water changes for the sensitive ones.

talizorah, in People who own typewriters, what is your favorite use for it?
@talizorah@kbin.social avatar

I own an IBM Selectic II, dual pitch, with the extra wide platen. I bought it, spent a long time diagnosing it and cleaning it before it ran properly.

I use it for one specific thing: letter writing. I'm an Aspie and can't always convey my emotions and thoughts properly, but I sure as hell can write. But not actually write with a pen, my handwriting is horrible.

When I want to say something heartfelt to someone else, I break out nice stationary, high quality paper, and one of my good typing elements, and I type it. I do have corrective tape, but my typing accuracy is pretty low, so I have to slow down. That extra effort is noticable: the type is sharper and blacker than any inkjet or laser printer, the paper is heavyweight and feels good in the hand... It almost commands respect from the reader, to pay attention to something like that.

I used it most recently to write my mother, to thank her for some things she helped me with, but didn't turn out. I knew she felt her effort was wasted or misplaced, buty words of reassurance didn't reach her. So I wrote a letter and sent it her way. Even though we're still in the same town, I mailed it. That made a difference to her, and I know she held onto it... Better than any email, or throwaway text message, and imo better than any printed document composed neatly with a word processor.

I think it's something special.

I just don’t like Star Wars and I like sci-fi in general. But Star Wars is just one of those stories I can’t make myself to like.

I remember fondly the prequels with pod racing and that red black guy with double lightsaber. I wached those movies as a child.

Later I tried watching all of them and I could not bring myself to finish even one. The dated effects (good for their time) just took me out of the story way too much.

I also tried waching the new ones, but they just felt boring so I dropped them.

I don’t know what is it about Star Wars, but I just can’t bring myself to like them even with nostalgia by my side.

Frigid,

Star wars was always more of a fantasy film than scifi, maybe that’s why?

mr_satan,
@mr_satan@monyet.cc avatar

I mean, I like both, so that’s not it…

AWittyUsername,

I used to love it as a child but as an adult now the only one I can tolerate is The Empire Strikes back.

Underwaterbob, (edited )

Because it’s the only really good Star Wars film. All the rest have either cringe-inducing acting, nonsensical plotting, or are inundated with inane family friendly elements like Ewoks, Anikin and Jarjar.

BorgDrone,

Maybe because Star Wars, at least the original 3 movies, aren’t really sci-fi. It’s a fairy tale with some SF veneer. There’s an evil emperor, a princess, knights, magic and a hero who saves the princess and eventually overthrows the evil emperor.

mr_satan,
@mr_satan@monyet.cc avatar

I think I like fantasy even more than sci-fi. Lord of the rings was awesome, both books and movies. I really liked The witcher books. I wouldn’t really say I have a strong preference to genre as long as the story is good. And execution of the story is even more important.

Lord_ToRA,
@Lord_ToRA@lemmy.world avatar

I absolutely love Star Wars, but I can admit they are pretty dumb and have terrible writing.

rockandsock,

The Star Wars movies are kids movies. If you can’t view them through that lens of being 9 years old again you’re not really going to enjoy them.

I still watch all of them in the theater when they come out but I channel my grade school self when I watch them.

treechicken, in What system or method do you use for your monthly budget or personal finance?
@treechicken@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe a bit basic but at the beginning of every month I clone this Google Sheets template, set goals in each category, and manually log receipts as I spend. Then at the end of the month, I “audit” my budget against my credit card transactions, pay off credit, and create the next month’s budget with any adjustments learned from the previous one.

For bigger view, long-term, I just linked all my accounts into Quicken and look at it sometimes.

Wow, that’s so cool! You turned an accident into something that looks like it was purposely made that way.

There is a special novelty in a mechanically typed page.

Briict,
@Briict@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Thanks, you can tell it really got under my skin because I bothered to center my type, I don’t like centering my type. It’s a bitch to center type, lol

But yeah very novel right now, like the other comment mentions choice of stationary, I like using cotton paper. Really leaves an impression.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Come to think of it, how do you go about centering on a manual typewriter?

Briict, (edited )
@Briict@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I get my lines character count, tab to center (or -10, -20 tab) then backspace to the right count. If I think it’ll make it look cleaner I sometimes mix a double space in or ignore punctuation marks from my count, I don’t mind them hanging past the rest like I would an M.

PS I thought I remembered messing it up right after I started and sure enough if you look at line three of that picture it’s pretty out there lol

graycube, in Donald Trump May 'Turn Off the Internet'. How even? A thought experiment.

The "Internet" isn't actually a thing. You can disrupt large portions of computer interconnectivity by targeting popular service providers and the larger traffic hubs. Because there is no central junction or single vendor or provider it isn't really something that can be completely shut off in one brush stroke. Note that television and voice calls and all money uses the same infrastructure. Selectively shutting off somethings and not others would be even harder.

forty2,
@forty2@lemmy.world avatar

Devil in the details, as with all things he says…

If we redefined what “turn off” means, and make it more like “no access to internet” the end result of turning off the internet is achieved.

So far, forcing telcos into action might be the most applicable? They can pick and choose services to disable I assume

LesserAbe,

Setting aside that making sense of things Trump suggests is pointless: one method would be a blanket order that telecom providers turn off access in a targeted area. I expect in America some portion of people would still figure out how to get connectivity, but cutting off 80% of internet access would still be very disruptive.

forty2,
@forty2@lemmy.world avatar

This is where I was leaning when thinking about it initially. It would almost have to be a non-technical solution. I’m guessing he’s more of an “internet for me, but not for thee” kind of turn-off-the-internet guy so infrastructure and service would need to operate on some level

punkwalrus, in People who own typewriters, what is your favorite use for it?
@punkwalrus@lemmy.world avatar

I have my mom’s old Smith Corona electric typewriter, possibly from the 1960s, but I haven’t researched it deeply yet. It comes with a hard suitcase with a 3-digit combination lock, and a novelty dust cover that says “Typewriter!” in a bold font. My mom died in 1987, and I just took it. Last used in 1998 when my mother in law borrowed it, and it caused a fight because she died unexpectedly and her estate executor wanted to sell it, not believing it to be mine. He was under the impression it was an antique he could get good money for, but I stole it back. Last appraisal was mid 2000s, and in new working condition, I could MAYBE sell it for $30. But it’s one of the few scant possessions I have of my moms, so I keep it.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, at that point it’s not about the dollar value.

SpaceNoodle,

It’s gotta be worth a lot more than that since it has the power to kill people.

punkwalrus,
@punkwalrus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m still alive, though. I used it a lot as a teen to write some of my first works of fiction, school reports, and so on. But yeah, that did occur to me. My mother died from suicide and my mother in law from medical malpractice, so they aren’t related. Still… superstitions are the worst stitions.

SpaceNoodle, (edited )

No, they’re super!

If you give the typewriter to someone else, either they’ll die or you will …

Wait, how much did you use that typewriter before your mother passed?

punkwalrus,
@punkwalrus@lemmy.world avatar

She switched to some “Sharp” (the brand) model that had a single-line LCD screen that you typed and when done, it would print the entire line at once. This made it easy to “backspace” typos before it was on paper. So she loaned me the Smith Corona. I think I used it for 2-3 years before she died.

SpaceNoodle,

New theory: the typewriter is in love with you, and will kill its owners in order to stay with you.

Christopher Nolan is the most overrated director of the last 20 years.

cashew,

I agree, though he is still a great director that makes great movies.

theredknight, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Inception is one of the worst executions of an interesting idea. My imagination can imagine anything. Hollywood’s? Well I guess you imagined too hard so now there’s people with guns. Oh and this applies to everyone.

themelm,

If you haven’t give the anime Paprika a watch. I don’t think its a smarter movie necessarily but it is great and I’m pretty sure a couple scenes from inception were basically pulled directly from paprika.

GoodEye8,

In theory I agree, but in practice? The amount of people having a hard time following the timelines of inception show that you really can’t make a more complex execution, the average viewer simply won’t get it. You have to simplify it to make it more digestible.

For comparison Dark is an exceptionally well done series that doesn’t hold back with the complexity. How many people can say they “got” Dark when watching it the first time around? I’m an attentive viewer and even I had wrap my head around it to really understand what had happened. My wife, who is not an attentive viewer, pretty much gave up after S2 because she simply lost the plot. Too many bits of information was thrown in her way and she couldn’t keep track of what was happening.

Personally, I give Nolan props for even trying to execute interesting ideas because the average high profile movie is pretty barren of interesting ideas. Would I like to see more interesting ideas with complex executions? Absolutely. Do I think it can be done? Considering who the target audience is, not really.

Mr_D_Umbguy, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Seeing movies in the theater is overrated and they are far more enjoyable at home.

stackPeek,
@stackPeek@lemmy.world avatar

I watched The Batman on IMAX on my birthday, although I was just a bit disappointed with the quality of the projector, I was mind blown by the audio!!! The audio on the chase scene especially!!!

Underwaterbob,

I agree with this to a point. It depends on your set up at home, vs whether or not you get decent seats at a theater and how crowded it is. I saw “Dune” from great seats in a mostly empty theater, and I don’t think any home set up could compare. I also watched “It Follows” at home late at night on a decent TV while my family was away, and I can’t imagine a better way to experience that one.

some_designer_dude,

If it weren’t for the popcorn and those cool Coke vending machines with seemingly infinite flavours, there would be zero draw at all for me. And even then, I haven’t been in years. Both of things cost about the same as a ticket, and I feel like an idiot paying 3000% markup for it in public.

VaultBoyNewVegas,

I’ve ibd so going to the cinema means I’ll inevitably miss at least 5 minutes every time my bowels want to be a bitch. At least watching movies at home I can pause the damn thing and I don’t miss things.

golli, (edited )

For me it depends. Some movies benefit more from the big screen than others. For example I went to see both Avatar movies in the cinema since those specifically shine because of their effects. With many other movies I agree that a good home cinema leaves little to be desired.

The other reason why I sometimes like the cinema experience is because it forces me to pay more attention and not get distracted. That might be a self-discipline issue, but this way i don’t randomly pick up my phone or similar. itespecially helps me appreciate longer slow movies more. For example something like “drive my car” (almost 3h long) that I glad I caught in the cinema when it came out
