BorgDrone,

I love Linux, but I never expect it to be mainstream or even extremely accessible to typical users

It already is mainstream. You probably own 10 times as many computers running Linux than Windows without even knowing it.

Desktop computers are a just a tiny part of the market.

it’d probably get ruined somehow by corporate interference, monetization, etc.

Yeah, it did. It’s called Android.

BorgDrone,

Mainstream Linux means a big part of people actively choosing to install a Linux distribution or buy a computer or notebook

How is that mainstream? Desktop computers (including notebooks) are a niche market.

How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

I remember when it was just Hulu for $5 and Netflix for $8. Saved $50 a month from cable. Now it seems we spend more. I have four. Max, Peacock, Paramount and Hulu. Prime doesn’t count because it sucks balls. (Only paying Netflix when next Stranger Things and Squid Game is released). Curious to see what the average...

BorgDrone,

Netflix, Prime, Apple TV, Disney+, HBO, SkyShowtime, Apple Music.

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

BorgDrone,

Maybe because Star Wars, at least the original 3 movies, aren’t really sci-fi. It’s a fairy tale with some SF veneer. There’s an evil emperor, a princess, knights, magic and a hero who saves the princess and eventually overthrows the evil emperor.

BorgDrone,

Yeah, that’s illegal.

BorgDrone,

It is in Europe. The advertised ‘from’ price must be the lowest price of the last 30 days.

BorgDrone,

Europe ar least

BorgDrone,

I live near a university that attracts quite a few international students/lecturers and I’ve often witnessed the exact opposite of this. You’re outside in the middle of summer, trying not to die of a heat stroke, when a obviously non-native person walks by wearing a winter coat and a hat.

BorgDrone,

Yeah that’s bullshit.

Hand Joe Sixpack a high-end DSLR (or MILC, since it’s 2023) and an iPhone and I’ll bet you he’ll take better pictures with the iPhone.

What dedicated cameras do is give you more options; you can change lenses, add filters, change exposure, etc. You have much more creative control. Sure, you also get better optics but that doesn’t matter much in the hands of an amateur.

Phones do a shitload of processing on the captured images. A DSLR does little to nothing. You are expected to do that yourself on your computer afterwards (again, more creative control where the phone makes those decisions for you).

The automated processing on phones does an excellent job for the kind of snapshots an average user wants to make. Much better than what they would be able to do themselves.

If you know what you’re doing you can do amazing things with a DSLR/MILC but in the hands of the general public the phone will give much better results 100% of the time.

A good camera doesn’t make great pictures, a good photographer does. Don’t buy an expensive camera thinking your pictures will suddenly look amazing. They will look much worse than the pictures your phone makes until you learn how to properly use it and how to process those images.

BorgDrone,

One of the many, many reasons I don’t have kids and never will

BorgDrone,

I thought he meant poorly maintained infrastructure.

BorgDrone,

How about starting with proper driving lessons and tests and not letting children drive 1+ ton death machines?

BorgDrone,

I made this a while back for a BBQ and everyone loved it, it was gone in no time.

BorgDrone,

I was confused at first as well, but they are both comparing waterfalls. The problem is that the waterfall in the bottom picture is so ugly (just a bunch of grey) that at first I didn’t even recognize it as such.

BorgDrone,

WebP is a tiny bit better on small images and slightly worse overal than JPEG, when using a good encoder library (mozjpeg). It is better than standard libjpeg but that’s not really a fault of the format as much as of the specific encoder.

BorgDrone,

Mental health care in the Netherlands is really terrible. I’m surprised you even got 3 sessions without being on a waiting list for months first. I guess you went to a ‘praktijkondersteuner’ at your GP? Those know fuck all and really aren’t any help. I had one literally tell me “usually I help people figure out what’s bothering them and once they know they can solve it, but you already know what’s bothering you, I can’t really help you”. Then I was put on waiting list for months, talked to a different guy for 1 hour, back on another waiting list for months.

At one point I literally called them and asked why it was taking so long (after waiting for months) and they said: oh, we have an opening next week, you can come then. Like, WTF, if you had an opening, why did I only find out after calling when you have a literal list of people waiting for evaluation? In the end I went to a psychologist (one of those ‘Sjakie’ types) for a year or two, which didn’t really help at all. Until they told me they couldn’t do anything more for me.

I get the feeling that if you want real help you need to go to a private practice an pay for everything yourself, which is crazy expensive.

BorgDrone,

Arent’t these standard everywhere? These things are super common here in Europe.
