Ahoy is still great, probably because it’s just 2 videos per year; Scott the Woz is still funny, Silvagunner too.

9cpluss,

The Jeff Bezos rowing boat video is a goddamn masterpiece. The amount of effort put into such an absurd project plus his entire side quest about baldness is just art!

All of them are a masterclass in narration.

Also, here’s a heads-up for anyone who does not realise that ‘bobby’ is one half of these fucking legends.

SheerDumbLuck,

I sent several friends the Bezos rowing boat video and the consensus is “what the fuck did I just watch?”

I still like Level1Techs. They don’t put out nearly as many videos as they used to, but what do they put out is usually good.

Lucidlethargy, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

I’d argue that none can claim to be high quality if they use tons of ads. I just can’t stand this sort of thing, and YouTube’s own paid system doesn’t block them all.

This said, my (free) adblockers currently work, and they block the sponsored stuff as well. When they work, I still really enjoy Kurzgesagt videos. They are excellent.

Philharmonic3, in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

AAVE. He used to be a cool tool review channel who really got into the nitty gritty of how electric tools worked and what made them quality. Now he’s an anti-vax spouting asshole who loves the truckers who blocked the bridge in Canada. Spiraled into the right-wing like a waterslide

Hylactor,

He kinda always flirted with being overly caustic in my experience. Definitely creeped a little too close to heteronormative, western world good, global south bad, clunky boomer type shit humor wise. But ya, around covid popping of I sensed some real cracks forming and I bounced on outta there.

Forgotten Weapons.

I think guns are neat, and Ian’s channel is a gun oriented one without the reactionary politics. I wouldn’t say his quality went down, but he (this was a few years ago) did a series on Rhodesian guns he got from a collector. I thought it was gross, but not necessarily bad. Lots of people are interested in Nazi stuff without being into the politics.

But then, in the middle of the George Floyd protests, he covers a grenade launcher (Like the one from Terminator2) that shoots rubber bullets and a bean-bag firing shotgun in the same week. Weird time to cover riot police gear. I haven’t watched since.

djshadow,

Can you elaborate on what the issue is with the Rhodesian guns part? I’m unfamiliar with it.

PugJesus,

Rhodesia was an ultra-racist regime back during the Cold War which fought a desperate war to avoid giving black people rights. Note - they were a country in Africa ruled by a tiny white minority of Anglo-Dutch settlers. Because their well-funded army performed relatively well against Zimbabwean militias and a newly formed national Zimbabwean army and had some domestic industrial capacity, far-right goons slaver all over anything Rhodesian and peddle “TEN MILLION ZIMBABWEANS < ONE RHODESIAN OPERATOR” style stuff.

Me, given Ian’s tendency to stay away from politics in general, his interest in a very wide variety of guns, and having given considerable pushback to Rhodesian fans and ‘white genocide’ loons in the past, as well as speaking against corporate and systemic racism issues in passing, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

corsicanguppy,

How else would a gun show be topical?

PugJesus,

Weird, since most people I’ve heard speculate Ian is actually on the left, minus, of course, gun control. But go far enough left and the standard position on gun control becomes much more loose.

PalmTreeIsBestTree, (edited )

Ian has never really come off to me as a secret right winger. His politics are something I’ve never seen or heard expressed in anyway. He comes off to me more of an apolitical academic interested only in firearms. He’s even written books about them. His favorite guns are French Army rifles which are not Nazi or Rhodesian. His book about them is very detailed.

Goblin_Mode, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

A lot of the old “Golden Age” League of Legends content creators have moved on to making really good content about other topics and games. Basically Dunkey and everyone who was at one point accused of being a Dunkey clone lol

Dunkey obviously still makes content and it’s still good. I’ve never personally been a huge fan of the short length goofy one off gag style of his but I know people still really like his content.

Skooch does miscellaneous other games now (mostly Mario and sonic lately) but the content is the best it’s ever been

Bricky does Warhammer mostly but also makes long form analyses of big AAA titles that are sequels to franchises from the 360 days

Keyori (now Barny/Maddy) rebranded, transitioned, and now makes literally the best World of Warcraft content I’ve ever seen

FrostPrime streams I know but I think his YouTube is literally exclusively just stream VODs now.

Outside of that group I still get a kick out of Game Grumps 10 years later but I know the old school let’s play thing isn’t really for everyone. Also Alpharad still makes good content, though lately it’s been a lot of mid, sponsored or otherwise kinda forced out stuff.

Forrest Valkai. He’s a biologist who makes a mixture of educational content, videos debunking creationist claims (in an educational way rather than the “look at this fucking idiot” approach that much of atheist youtube seems to take), and just some silly fun in-between.

He doesn’t have the insanely high production value of other channels named here, but he’s the most wholesome person I’ve ever seen. His love for life and science radiates off of him and watching him passionately explain how cool something is genuinely makes me happy in such a depressing and pessimistic world.

toasty_mcboost, (edited ) in Which of your favorite creators content quality went downhill very quickly?

Possibly controversial but… Hot Ones.

I prefer the older videos with less/no post production effects. I tried watching the interview with Elijah Wood but the fading video overlapping, music, zoom ins/outs, the voice echoing, and I couldn’t deal with these stupid transitions. Closed the video and haven’t got back since. The channel has one job and that is to make people eat progressively hot wings but the stupid post production effects ruin the video quality and make the whole interview less engaging. COOL IT SEAN!

Their content is good but how it’s presented is garbage.

SasquatchBanana,

I liked it a lot when they had smaller content creators. Do they do that anymore or is it only celebs?

BigBananaDealer,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

i think they also got rid of a lot of the really really hot sauces

its mostly just dabomb or last dab that are actually super hot

hactar42,

I feel like Sean’s interviewing has gone down too. He used to be so good about asking unique and interesting questions you wouldn’t hear elsewhere. Now he seems to like to interject his own thoughts and anecdotes, way too often.

RetroGradeBE,

I never really enjoyed his interview style, granted I only watched some of the later episodes but it never really got me. Quite monotone voice and very rehearsed feeling questions.

Hate to say it, but Wintergatan and his Marblemachine X. In the earlier days his videos were an exciting mix of mad genius, cool music improv and crafting. Then he became obsessed with making the machine play tight, precise music to a level that is beyond what anybody in an audience would be able to hear, and it became obvious that the machine would never get finished because he was stuck in an improvement loop.

Z4rK,

His goal wasn’t to create an art project though, but to create an actual instrument he can use. The artistry stuff and making it look cool was what made MMX a failure. I agree that the MMX videos were still fantastic content, but that thing was doomed.

Tightness: it’s a compound effect of every part, so afaik he’s just trying to make sure each part is as precise as possible, and selecting the most precise / consistent design out of the available choices.

MonsieurKoala,
@MonsieurKoala@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, one lf the most painful un subscribing I did. He forgot he was making an art instrument and got lost into engineering nonsense that he doesn’t even understand. Under every videos there are people screaming that he is making assumptions that won’t work in the real world and others that are just sad because the magic is gone.

Abandoning the MMX felt like being scammed by a shady Indigogo (can’t imagine how it felt for the patreons) after so much progress and many years of anticipation.

I still check his videos every few months and just randomly watch a few seconds of the videos, his new plans are ridiculous and uninspiring :/.

koolkiwi,
@koolkiwi@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, pretty much this. Would have been best had he never bothered with 3d printed and manufactured parts as they allow a level of control (or illusion thereof) that would have never been possible with wood. Who cares if you’re losing a couple of marbles during a show (no pun intended), or if the snare drum isn’t tight to the thousandth of a second?

Pirasp,

The MMX is not completely abandoned btw, the guys at Musikkabinett are bringing it up to a classmate state

www.youtube.com/channel/UCX6bJc3ieykQOdqnQOmSdGw

Sure, Martin is not involved, but the machine is the same and the spirit is similar too.

Z4rK, (edited )

The MMX was doomed and not possible to save. It is exactly what it looks like: A cool looking contraption that can make some nice sounds using marbles, but it’s not an instrument you can use reliably in a band. You think it was hard for you to unsubscribe; how hard don’t you think it was for Martin to abandon the MMX? He wished it to succeed more than any of us, and probably abandoned it way too late because of it.
