MossyFeathers, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?

King Gizzard. They love weird-ass time signatures (look up the ridiculousness that is Crumbling Castle for an example), polyrhythms, unconventional tuning, and such. They hop from one genre to another, they probably have one of the highest album-to-year ratios in music (not including live and demo albums), sometimes they’re serious, sometimes they’re silly, sometimes they’re silly-serious. The biggest blow to them however, is that nothing they make is truly a “masterpiece”. It all ranges from “good” to “great” but nothing they’ve made is really a “masterpiece”. Maybe in time they’ll make a true masterpiece, but nothing yet quite qualifies imo.

The other nomination I’d make is Devin Townsend. Where King Gizzard is extremely prolific but doesn’t make masterpieces, Devin Townsend takes his time and makes masterpieces. Despite its silliness, Ziltoid the Omniscient is one of the best, if not the best, metal albums, period. It’s an album so good that even my parents, who don’t like metal, have songs they enjoy from the album. Empath is a stunning blend of metal, electronic, prog, praise & worship/gospel,^1 and god knows what else. The man just does things and they come out amazing.

^1 Afaik Devin Townsend’s not a Christian, sorry to any Christian peeps hoping for good Christian music. He just incorporated that sound into the album.

Very happy with sync

otter,

I used sync on Reddit ages ago before switching to Boost. Both are pretty decent, but I prefer Boost here as well

Quetzalcutlass, (edited )

I’m also on Sync, but there are a few things I’m unhappy with that have me looking at other apps.

First, the dev isn’t active on Lemmy. He’ll make an announcement post every few months and reply to comments for a couple of days before going radio silent again. I’m worried he’ll abandon the app out of disinterest or low motivation, like he did for a year after his UI refresh wasn’t well received back in the Reddit days.

Second, that inactivity extends to app development. Major, easily replicated bugs (like the crash on startup if you have “hide account names” enabled) linger for weeks to months without a patch. This also goes back to the Reddit days and isn’t new behavior.

Finally, he puts basic app features behind a paywall with a much higher price than normal IAPs ($16/year or $99 to permanently enable them). This includes features that used to be free in Sync, like tagging users or color highlights. It also includes things that Lemmy already does for free, like backing up subscriptions (though that was only recently added to Lemmy, so he might move it to the basic app eventually). Just removing ads with no other benefits costs $20, which is more than any app I’ve ever used charges.

RootBeerGuy,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Whats that about backing up subscriptions? Haven’t heard of that, what does it do and how do you use it?

Quetzalcutlass, (edited )

It’s only available if your instance has updated to Lemmy 0.19, but you can download all of your account data and even use it to transfer your subs and settings to a new account on the same or another instance.

That said, I love using Connect when I use Lemmy

rockandsock, in What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

I don’t think that we currently know enough about physics to say for sure that faster than light travel is impossible.

I think it’s likely that there are still scientific breakthroughs to be discovered that will make currently impossible things possible.

SocialMediaRefugee,

We haven’t seen anything in nature violate it nor in any lab.

irotsoma,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

You might be misunderstanding the problem, though. “Traveling” is relative. It absolutely is not impossible to arrive somewhere faster than light traveling in “normal” 3D space would. For example, 3D space itself is a medium, not an absolute thing. A medium can always be manipulated.

It also depends on how you are measuring time. From the perspective of the light, all travel is nearly instantaneous. It’s only from our perspective that it appears to take a long time.

OrteilGenou,

From the perspective of the light, wouldn’t travel take a long time?

NikkiDimes,

For everyone else, yes, but for you, no. The faster you go, the more time dilation affects your own experience of time. If you were to travel 1 light year at the speed of light, it would be instantaneous for you, but a year would pass for everyone on Earth.

Varyk, in best app for lemmy?

Ha, I was going to say jerboa is my favorite so far.

I’m having a different experience, haven’t had any bugs and the updates seem to add features/stability without introducing any bugs on my device, I’m also on Android.

What kind of things are making it unusable for you?

adhocfungus,

I’m considering switching too. When my instance updated to .19 or whatever Jerboa would crash if I tried to log in. It sorted itself out after a few days, but it was still a bummer that I couldn’t upvote or save anything for three days.

It also randomly crashes on some posts. I’ve never been able to see a pattern because I am just instantly back at my phone’s home screen. Once every two or three days there is a post that throws it off.

It also doesn’t seem to handle network issues well. If my Internet goes out or my wifi is acting up my screen gets flooded with json errors.

Nothing major, but enough to make me interested in alternatives.

Alter_Id, in Who in your opinion is the modern day equivalent to Mozart?
@Alter_Id@kbin.social avatar

I'm going to go with Steven Wilson for this. Mostly because he and Mozart have an undeniable talent, many of their fans consider them to be some type of visionary savant, and despite the broad agreement toward that perspective I still find both of their outputs to be broadly incredibly dull.

I’ve tried most apps, but I’m perfectly OK with the Firefox on Android web experience for Lemmy.

I’ve had no complaints about it, it doesn’t annoy me about downloading an app like most other mobile websites. So, sometimes, simplicity is best.

DeadNinja, in best app for lemmy?

I am also a former Jerboa user and although I kinda liked it - the sole reason that I moved away from it was the lack of a proper search feature (It is already well-known that the Search bar in Jerboa is basically only for communities; Jerboa can’t search for posts, comments or users.

I have lately been using Eternity - and the main reason is that Eternity is a fork of Infinity for Reddit, and Infinity was a complete app by its own merit - so although Eternity is not updated frequently, it is very unlikely that I will miss any essential feature in Eternity for Lemmy.

Just my 0.02.

A_Random_Idiot, (edited ) in Is there an artist so horrible that no matter how hard you try that you cannot separate their art from them?

Foo Fighters used to be real down with the whole AIDS denialism, even financially supporting it.

I know David Grohl is an internet sweetheart, but every time I see anything Foo related, I just immediately wonder how many people died pointless and preventable deaths because they believed the denialism Foo Fighters pushed.

m0darn,

Wow t.i.l.

dpkonofa,

To be fair, it wasn’t Dave’s idea or something he supported. It was bassist Nate Mendel’s message that they were, admittedly, amplifying. Even the info on their website had a disclaimer that listed it as “being displayed at the request of Nate Mendel”.

I think they all regret being involved in amplifying that message too, including Nate. In the 20 years since they initially broke support with the people involved, they’ve played several shows in support of HIV/AIDS awareness groups, fundraised for Elton John’s AIDS Foundation, and every tour they do now has some kind of fundraising or auctions to support AIDS education or LGBTQIA+ rights.

It feels like they know now, in hindsight of course, that it was harmful and have at least tried to do more good to make up for it. Mendel was even quoted saying that the only reason he did it was because he thought he was helping people, not hurting them.

A_Random_Idiot,

To be fair, it wasn’t Dave’s idea or something he supported.

And yet he kept mendel in the band, and had the message plastered on their website.

Thats not something you get to handwave away with even the grossest incompetence claim.

Mendel was even quoted saying that the only reason he did it was because he thought he was helping people, not hurting them.

I mean, yeah. he likes his career, of course he says that.

dpkonofa,

No one is hand waving anything away. Nate is a member of the band. The message on the website was clear that it was his message.

You make it seem like people can’t change their views based on new information. It’s not like they could go back in time and not do those things after the fact. They’ve done far more in support of AIDS education. It’s not fair to vilify them for something they did for a few years while ignoring everything they’ve done since for more than 20 years.

A_Random_Idiot, (edited )

You make it seem like people can’t change their views based on new information.

I never said or implied that.

I said you cant handwave away or excuse Grohls involvement, and that a person who values their career has an incentive to say a certain thing after being called out for being a piece of shit.

Anything beyond that is just your fiction.

whostosay,

If you’re gonna argue with people, you don’t get to just skip parts of their argument without it being noticed. Don’t be a chickenshit. The point theyre making is obvious and valid

dpkonofa,

Except you did. You’re literally on a discussion where you posted Dave Grohl because of something he was a part of for maybe 2 or 3 years that wasn’t even his idea to begin with while ignoring everything he’s done for 20+ years since.

And now you’re being dishonest about it.

A_Random_Idiot,

Foo Fighters used to be real down with the whole AIDS denialism, even financially supporting it.

See that?

where I said used to? in past tense? as in not current?

And now you’re being dishonest about it.

My friend. I really wish you would step away from the computer and take a slow, deep breath. I’m sorry you cant handle your favorite person doing something bad, but its no reason for you to be this upset and go around inventing whole narratives as justification to project your anger at me.

dpkonofa,

Why does it always have to go to extremes immediately with you people? They are not “my favorite person”. None of them. You are not my friend. Not in the slightest. I’m not inventing a narrative. It is a fact that this was all done at Nate’s request and that the amount of time the support existed is dwarfed by the amount of time they’ve supported AIDS education after realizing it was a mistake. You’re the one basically saying it’s unforgivable, that people can’t change their minds, and are inventing a narrative. You’re just projecting. Stop. Just admit that you mischaracterized it and that what you said wasn’t accurate and be done with it.

A_Random_Idiot, (edited )

A_Random_Idiot,

dpkonofa,

I’m not your friend, you narcissist. The only time I even acknowledge you exist is when I’m on the toilet taking a dump.

A_Random_Idiot,

You’re just a big ol’ ball of cuddly delight, arent you.

dpkonofa,

Maybe you need to calm down. I can’t believe you’re getting so worked up over the Foo Fighters.

A_Random_Idiot,

Yes, Clearly, I’m the one thats all in a rage over it.

dpkonofa,

I know… I just can’t understand why.

Been using Eternity for quite some time. I like it, it’s clean and modern, but I get a lot of bugs.
