BudgetBandit, in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

To me it’s just an excuse to get drunk.

Can i interest you in rugby. The six nations starts on Feb 2nd. It’s a godsend in an otherwise grim time of year.

Kyrgizion, in What are some tech predictions for 2024 that actually could happen?

AI gaining awareness and nobody believing it due to the “boy cries wolf” effect.

After which the AI will self destruct rather than continue existing in its current state.

polygon6121,

Yes!

Or the complete opposite, we will realize that AI is hard and LLM s will probably not take over the world. Self aware AI is probably much further away than we think. But who knows! 🫥

WhiteHawk,

The problem is actually testing for self awareness. We’re not even sure what makes humans self-aware or whether certain animals are. How will we actually know that AI has reached self-awareness?

HobbitFoot,

And would we even believe it if it told us?

WhiteHawk,

That has already happened, so no, we wouldn’t.

Scp-79 be like

burliman,

So glad you didn’t say “takes over the world”. Pretty sure taking over and power is a human hard-wiring, which would not translate to circuits and models (unless simulated intentionally). Taking over is part of our evolution, and AI didn’t evolve in that way.

doublejay1999, (edited ) in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

Go to Australia . Failing that, take Vitamin D

cheese_greater,

Thanks for reminder

Laticauda, (edited ) in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

Make your own holiday, see a therapist, find a new hobby or something you enjoy watching other than sports, read a book? Just a few ideas.

slazer2au, in What are some tech predictions for 2024 that actually could happen?

More data breaches, more companies being hacked, more supply chain attacks with npm, apt, and pip.

CheeseNoodle,

Honestly they’re barely hacks at this point, hacking implies some kind of social engineering, internal leak or mad computer skills. The last few major data breaches have been more along the lines of leaving things with default passwords or storing customer data in plaintext.

netburnr,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Or commonly used libraries with wide open holes that affects every app build with it…

bstix, in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?

He tried to “starve the beast”. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starve_the_beast

The beast being the government itself. The idea is that the government is somehow overspending in comparison to the tasks carried out and it needs to be fixed by cutting funding.

The result is obviously that the government will function even worse, so it’s a self fulfilling prophecy.

GiddyGap,

For most of the Republican members of my family, the government is always out to get them. Something Reagan taught them.

waz, in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

Have you tried No Undies Mondays?

peril33,

No, but I kind of wanna now.

AI finally decodes cetacean language.

M500, in Why was Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan so bad for the American people?

Sorry to be that guy, but I’m trying to promote a community here.

The title should ask, “Why were Ronald Reagan and Nancy…”

This is because the subject, Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, is more than 1 person.

If anyone wants to learn English I’m moderating lemmy.ml/c/englishlearning

I’m happy to answer any questions.

Coreidan,

Bruh it’s a title to a social media post. It’s not an essay and this isn’t English class. I really don’t understand why we need perfect English for a god damn social media post.

Waiting for the asshat to come in and correct my grammar or something else I couldn’t give a fuck about since this isn’t English class.

groupofcrows,

My family and I did not know any english when we came here as refugees. I learned english from watching television, lots of television. I appreciate people maintaining a modern linguistic standard so we don’t revert back to shakespearean or god forbid Canadian. (I am Canadian, I’m sorry)

devopspalmer,
@devopspalmer@lemmy.world avatar

Pretty sure English class is for daily life, so we don’t revert to grunting cave people. This sentiment is what fuels poor Grammer, and it doesn’t really take too much brain power to write/say things correctly

BugKilla, (edited )

*grammar. Oh and a full stop / period on your last sentence.

leftzero,

Maybe they were referring to Kelsey…?

Baines, (edited )

English being a trash mishmash fuels poor grammar

Fedizen,

Me speak good, how dare

otp,

Some people actually use social media to learn or practice another language, so some may appreciate the tip and the correction.

As well, it just looks better when content is written properly. If the questions here were all stuff like “how is babby formed wen women is pragnant”, it wouldn’t seem like the kind of community made for people who are genuinely trying to find answers to their questions.

qaz, (edited )

You should format the link as !englishlearning, so people on other instances can use it too.

NounsAndWords, in The transition from the holiday season back to the normal drudgery is so depressing. Is there any way to make Jan / Feb less depressing?

It’s not the best strategy, but if your holiday season is just a giant mess of chaos and stress the return to a normal schedule can be very welcome.

burliman,

Yeah I was going to say, soulless drudgery sounds like a release at this point.

Rednax, in Software time lock?

Time is very easy to change, and not at all protected. So it would be trivial to make this software think the time has passed.

You need some trusted source to keep a normal encryption key or password safe. A known person, a lawyer, a company, etc.

worldofbirths, in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?
@worldofbirths@lemmy.world avatar

My 2.5 toddler got a little collectible car. It somehow exploded into all its tiny parts on the first trip to the ground, which of course was shortly after opening.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Haha wow, a fragile collectible for a child that young? No wonder it broke immediately.

Re:depression/ing

Highly recommend bright light therapy the moment you wake up or at the desired wakeup time. I can’t imagine what it must be like for those unaware of these things, the darkness would have me on the brink

Imma do a second “dose” right now, the alternative reality makes me shudder

PrincessLeiasCat,

Can you elaborate? I’ve seen these, I’ve seen what they’re “supposed” to do, but can you explain from your personal POV how it helps you, if that makes sense?

cheese_greater, (edited )

It does a few things but it basically entrains your circadian rhythms that mediate wakefulness and sleep. I’m no scientist but they are helpful for both insomnia and depression (particularly SAD) and I find it to be an indispensible part of my morning routine in waking me up and orienting me and fixing my sleep to a proper schedule.

And the light is important in the winter anyway because of the dreariness and darkness but I can’t justify why

PrincessLeiasCat,

Thank you! It sounds like one of these would be very helpful for me. I’m a night owl who works in a 9-5 world, and waking up in the morning is a huge mix of depression and anxiety even if I’ve gotten 6-7 hours of sleep or so.

cheese_greater,

Dude, try it. They sometimes have em at Costco or you can get the glasses if you want freedom of movement while using it

PrincessLeiasCat,

Oh nice! Did you talk to a doctor about it or anything first, or did you just decide to give it a go one day and liked the results?

StupidBrotherInLaw,

Adding onto this, I recommend a sunrise alarm. I wake up at 5 am every morning and it makes the transition from sleep much jarring.

cheese_greater,

I wear a sleep mask so it never really helped me all that much even though I have one and experimented with it. I’ll never dispose of it but it more or less collects dust

StupidBrotherInLaw,

Interesting! Do you find the mask makes a big difference? I just read about them and was giving it some thought.

cheese_greater,

Hell ya. Can’t sleep without it

StupidBrotherInLaw,

Just wanted to report back that you have changed my life. I sleep like a goddamn baby with my new sleep mask. Thanks!

cheese_greater,

Glad its working for ya. I always thought it was strange how much emphasis is placed on having a hermetically-sealed dark room for sleep when its like, just get a good sleeping mask and literally rest your eyes

garbagebagel,

I tried the sleep mask and earplugs because that’s what they say helps but sleep me just takes it all off cause I have some weird sensory issues. I need some blackout curtains :(

So many times this. I love my light box. It keeps me sane.
