Kolanaki, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Earthquakes are the only things I’ve ever had to worry about where I live. The preparation other than basics for any emergency is (hopefully) handled by the construction companies that built my home and the surrounding buildings, since this is California and making buildings earthquake proof is a requirement here. Unless a super quake hits or something. Then I plan to move to the Eastern coast of the state. 😎

chris, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?
@chris@l.roofo.cc avatar

With FEP-c118 there is currently an extension to the activitypub protocol in the works to allow setting a license on posts. If you don’t add a license info in your posts the licensing is unclear. I think that some jurisdictions give a default copyright and some protections to the author but I don’t know how that works.

With the fediverse you you have as much or as little rights as when you put it on your private blog without explicit licensing. If someone uses your works without your consent you still have to find out and you have to protected your rights yourself.

There are currently no lemmy or kbin instances that have monetization options. The only ActivityPub software I know that can show ads is misskey.

In the end you have to be aware that any kind of open social network is like screaming your thoughts towards a big crowd. You lose most of your control over it the second it’s out. It is nearly impossible to track who has the information and who shares it with others.

There are legal protections in some parts of the world but even then you first have to find out that something bad happened. If an instance were to start monetizing data it would probably cut off pretty fast and all the communities would probably move.

Still if there is stuff you don’t want everyone to know don’t post it publicly.

Atin, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?

Droughts and bushfires are the two biggest worries here. We get occasional floods, but those occur more often in surrounding towns where the local councils haven’t done anything in years to clear out the riverbeds.

jonne, in What caused the downfall of the Black Panthers group?

The FBI murdered their leadership, for one.

Spendrill,

And the CIA pumped a load of heroin into the inner cities to pacify the urban black population as part of their financing of various undeclared wars in the South-East Asian conflict.

Decades later a similar thing would happen with crack cocaine as part of the anti-Sandinista action.

Kusimulkku,

I thought that was still on conspiracy theory stage. CIA’s involvement in drug trade is known and proven, them using it as a tool against black people not so much

Spendrill,

In that case you have to say that it was purely accidental that heroin tore through the ghetto while most of white society was unaffected. And then the same thing happened accidentally twenty years later.

And then compare and contrast to the current opioid crisis, which did affect all strata of society because prescription drugs were marketed to doctors as safe.

Kusimulkku,

I mean factors like poverty surely pay a role. It’s often the poor communities that are hit the hardest by drug epidemics. So no surprise that the black community was hit the hardest but the influx of drugs did hit other communities too.

We know drugs were brought in and they hit poor urban communities the hardest. For intention you’d sorta need something to actually show for it imo.

pearsaltchocolatebar,

Fun fact, the reason cocaine is on the drug schedule is so they could put black people in jail.

Aside from the Big One (for which I’ve been meaning to make an emergency kit but keep putting off because reasons), we get really bad wildfires now on the west coast so before every summer I load up my inhaler and nasal spray, then I proceed to not go outside for 3 or 4 weeks because outside air bad. Thanks lungs. Thankfully I don’t live where the fires are normally happening, just in the vicinity. if I did, the above mentioned nonexistent emergency kit could be made fireproof and double up for preparedness.

I’m an old adult and i went for Invisalign instead of braces two years ago.

Was pricey but an absolute breeze compared to the horror of having braces i experienced over two decades earlier.

cabbage, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

In short, anything you publish here will, by design, be broadcast all around to whatever service is interested in listening. Collecting data about fediverse users is as easy as setting up a federated service designed to collect data, and observe what comes in. In some countries there are regulations for what kind of data you're allowed to store, but you could always just go somewhere else and do it.

Nobody is going to buy user data from sh.itjust.works or any other service because why the hell would they do that when they can just collect everything for free.

This is not unlike everything else on the Internet. If you publish something, it can be used. Maybe not legally in all countries, but as we have learned from the AI revolution nobody really cares about legality anyway.

Nothing you post here, or anywhere else on the internet, is private. It's all public, and if companies find a way of profiting off it chances are that they will. If they can't do it legally in the US they will do so somewhere else. The only way of avoiding it is by not publishing in open forums.

If you're worried about your user data, the best you can do is probably to jump around between different accounts.

I’ve seen even people in their 40s using them. I don’t think that it’s a big deal, or that it’s too late for that.

Not a board game, but 9/11. Which is a combination of Jenga and Gorodki.

BongsForJesus, in Getting braces as a young adult?

It’s a massive pain in the ass but I say go for it. There are huge long term benefits which outweigh the inconvenience. You will probably have those teeth for there rest of your life so you might as well look after them.

I got braces at 21 and absolutely don’t regret it. If anything I wish I used my retainer longer afterwards for maintenance.

Diplomjodler3,

Yes. Do this. It’ll be unpleasant but you’ll regret it for the rest of your life if you don’t do it.

If you’re concerned about other folks - Most people don’t give a slightest flying F.

You may (and probably will) find some man-childs having a giggle about it, but also some people that will understand that’s for your good and nice straight teeth

But in some small percentage are weirdos that find it cool and attractive (like me lol)

But if you’re concerned about your daily life with braces - I don’t know, I had the removable ones and those were so uncomfortable and disgusting. Having a piece of plastic on my palate sometimes triggered a gag reflex. So yeah if only I knew I would choose the standard ones
