Aibohphobia is the (unofficial) fear of palindromes

thomasloven, (edited )

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is the fear of long words.

hakunawazo, (edited )

That is just as cruel as forcing speech impaired people to pronounce the word speech-language pathologist.

grue, in Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

Do I need a desktop for CAD?

Probably not, unless your models are really complicated or you do heavy duty finite-element analysis or something and thus need a high-end GPU. (If that were you, you’d know it and wouldn’t have needed to ask.)

Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?)

Linux is the best, but if your use-case is CAD you’re likely stuck on Windows because Autodesk etc. are run by assholes (in other words, because most CAD software only runs in Windows).

Browsers ditto?

Firefox, because it’s the only reasonably-mainstream browser that doesn’t use the same rendering engine as Chrome. You shouldn’t use any Chromium-based browser because allowing Google to have hegemony over web standards is bad for the Internet and society as a whole.

Adderbox76, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Breaking Bad, Parks and Rec, Harry Potter Movies, Twilight Movies, 50 Shades Movies, Arrested Development, and roughly 90% of everything Tarantino has made with the exception of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (The guy’s a douche whose entire oeuvre is two-plus hours of patting himself on the back for how film history literate he is)

jelloeater85,
@jelloeater85@lemmy.world avatar

Breaking Bad was amazing. Arrested Development was funny as heck, great cast. Parks and Rec season 1 was meh, got wayyy better after the first season. Also you should try and watch Kill Bill 1+2, they were really good and over the top as heck. Also Django Unchained and Inglorious Bastards were really great too.

intensely_human, in What's some amazing technology they have in Japan that's very normal to them but would blow our minds here in the US and western world?

It’s just a small thing. The escalators don’t run continuously. They start running as you approach them.

h3rm17,

We have those in Europe as well, not Hyper commin, but still

ammonium,

We have escalators that don’t stop in Europe? I didn’t even know those existed.

c10l,

We even have those in Brazil. Not everywhere, I reckon most are older than those but I’ve seen them in some malls and airports at least.

HandwovenConsensus,

I’ve seen some in the US that run slowly until you get close. I guess they think that if it was stopped completely, people would assume it’s non-operational.

drawerair,

They can put a sign saying it’ll run when there’s a person. Eventually it’ll be common knowledge. I’m just thinking re efficiency.

paddirn, in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

Latest one is Dune. I’ve read the book (rereading it now actually) and seen all the other versions, but for some reason I’m holding off on this movie, I guess until at least the next one comes out.

The topic has to seed first and then all of the information I know about it rushes in.

Orcas are a natural predator of the moose

Followupquestion,

Orcas are a natural predator of everything that his the ocean. Fun fact, orcas have been known to toy with seals by catapulting them with their tails. I believe I remember seeing at least one baby seal got seventy feet in the air before returning to the sea (and its inevitable death).

Interstellar_1,
@Interstellar_1@pawb.social avatar

I hate to break it to ya, but moose aren’t in the ocean.

Rakonat,

All cases known to have happened are in Alaska, where moose were swimming across straits and between islands. Orcas are opportunistic hunters and nearly anything swimming in water deep enough for them to swim in has a chance of being eaten. Most of them keep their distance from humans but if you were swimming in their territory away from civilization and boat traffic you might be stalked and hunted.

@Interstellar_1@pawb.social avatar

oh that’s interesting! Thanks I didn’t know that!

Found at 7-11, combo ketchup/mustard blister pack that when you simply bend and squeeze together, ketchup and mustard come out evenly for your corn-dog and no mess for your fingers.

gazter,

Those little squeeze packets are an Aussie invention, I believe!

coaxil,

We take our tomato sauce seriously here!

tocopherol,
@tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You have tomato sauce packets? It’s funny to think of ketchup as tomato sauce, in the US if you called it that everyone would be confused even though it is really the most accurate thing you could call it

coaxil,

We do no indeed! What do you guys call tomato sauce?

tocopherol,
@tocopherol@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

We would call the sauce for burgers, fries etc ketchup, ‘tomato sauce’ in the US would be the sort for pasta, like marinara. If you asked for tomato sauce for a burger people would be very confused lol.

coaxil,

Ah right right, haha that’s cool!

SkippingRelax, (edited )

Is it though? There are other things people refer to as tomato sauce and that could be confusing. As an Italian living in Australia i cringe every time someone refers to ketchup as tomato sauce. Tomato sauce should be a beautiful thing that goes in pasta, lasagne and all gorgeous food stuff. Ideally home made.

The vinegary shit that drunk people here put on their meat pie (that BTW would taste beautifully as they comes out of the oven, no need to put any nasty shit on it) - it’s called ketchup and you just ruined that beautiful pie.

optissima,

Ketchup is gazpacho

nickiam2,

I’ve never seen one with 2 different sauces tho. Such a good idea

Technoguyfication,

And the 7/11 corn dog is better than any I’ve eaten in the US.

Stanislav Petrov’s name, for some weird reason. Lots of people can tell the story but just refer to him as ‘a radar operator’.

mnemonicmonkeys,

The only guy to shoot down an F-117? Lazerpig just mentioned him in a video a week ago

You are thinking of Zoltán Dani? That is another good story. Petrov was famous for not being aggressive.

mnemonicmonkeys,

Yes, thanks for the clarification!

Lemminary, (edited ) in What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?

The Godfather. And I don’t really plan on seeing it because I don’t like the genre or those tropes.

I hear good things about How I Met Your Mother but I’m too lazy to pillage it. Arrgh!

chocolatine,

How I met your mother was very funny back in the day but it did not age well…
