BeautifulMind, in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?
@BeautifulMind@lemmy.world avatar

I’d take it today. I’m in my 50s, I’m an endurance athlete (I race bikes) and the calculus looks like: if I wait 20 years I get to experience body-age 50-70 twice, but if I take it now I experience 30-50 twice. Living my prime twice is better than enduring my decline twice, thanks

Let’s say hypothetically this repairs organ damage.

I have 2 choices. I can save the pill for when I or a loved on is in serious danger of death or I can do a shit ton of LSD, like an absurd amount of LSD, enough to actually break me and then reset.

It’s a tough choice /s

Try southeast asia. Lower cost of living and can get by with english. As others have said, you can’t just go apply for citizenship. You’ll have to become a permanent resident first, and you need to work and live there for a while to do that.

uservoid1, (edited ) in How do you know if/when a cat's guilty

They could poop inside the box but digging it out by mistake when trying to cover it.

If you have more than one cat, one might be stressed by the other(s), especially if new.

Cat might be too old or too small to climb into the box, or not feeling well.

Some cats are assholes and doing it on purpose to show you they are not happy (is the box clean?).

cheese_greater,

Ya they have an auto and its always clean. It only started happenint since I spread out the mats to cover more of the floor.

I know the obvious solution is to go back to the way it was (more or less on top of each other) but so much shrapnel litter gets tracked otherwise.

jak,

Maybe just change mats. What’s the texture like?

    SelfHigh5,

When I was a kid I could not understand how that line was meant to be peaceful. Even listening to the rest of the song, it was still unsettling. I was raised Catholic so the song just starts with like “imagine the worst case scenario”. As an atheist now, it’s more hopeful to me. Like imagine what the world could be like if we weren’t just biding time until we were dead. If we all just knew this was the one chance one opportunity mom’s spaghetti.

    blazeknave,

    Yeah exactly. Jewish but same.

I mean… the first thesis statement in capitalism is “there is a scarcity of resources” and that dominates our lives. Yet, not when we think of life itself.

You seen that Timeless(?) movie with JT?

    sizzler,

This is more relevant than most people realise. There is seemingly an increase in religion the older you get. As you said, fear of death and the comfort of something still to come.

-All of the planets in the solar system can fit between the earth and the moon -Stoplights detect your presence with an electromagnetic field using wires and not pressure -There is a receiver above stoplights that EMS vehicles can trigger to change the light red for everyone -We left astronaut poop on the moon -The numbers on a toaster are not always in minutes -Most common mold is not dangerous when ingested or inhaled unless you are allergic -Celeste Tea was founded and made by a cult, maybe still is -Christian Science had laws passed in the majority of states in the 80s that prevented prosecution of child abuse due to religious practices -The statistical value of a human life in the US is 10 million at dollars -Jellyfish reproduce and are birthed as polyps on the ocean floor -The chiral version of the sugar molecule would taste identical to sugar but is indigestible, we have no practical ways to produce it though afaik -Only one president has failed to release his tax documents -There are multiple US presidents who were likely gay

2 facts about the CMOS battery on a motherboard: CMOS stands for “complimentary metal oxide semiconductor”. Its a 2032 watch battery.

    indepndnt,

Also, the 2032 numbering indicates its physical size: it’s 20mm x 3.2mm. There are for example 2025’s (like in my car remote) that are 20mm x 2.5mm.

And CMOS refers to what the battery was powering on the motherboard (a small amount of CMOS static RAM) rather than anything about the battery itself. I don’t know if motherboards still use any static RAM, the batteries might only be there to power the clock these days, making the name just a historical convention.

    chiliedogg, (edited )

It goes beyond button batteries too. Lots of batteries use the same system. For instance, many flashlights run off of 18650 cells.

Nonameuser678, in We've already started this year off with crazy shit. What else do you guys think will happen this year and why?
    @Nonameuser678@aussie.zone avatar

More war. Not necessarily WW3 but an increase in the number of proxy type conflicts.

    Gork, (edited )

    Let’s see… Major ones are

    • Russia-Ukraine in Eastern Europe
    • Israel-Hamas in the Middle East
    • Civil war in Myanmar
    • Azerbaijan-Armenia

    Possible flashpoints are

    • Taiwan-China (roping in the US)
    • Russia-NATO (Poland or the Baltics)
    • Iran-Israel (not entirely sure how that’ll work since they’re not directly adjacent)
    • North Korea-South Korea

I see the world coalescing into two major axes of power: “the West” and Western aligned/allied nations comprising US/UK/EU/Australia/Israel/Japan/S. Korea on one side. Largely Democracies or Parliamentary systems.

On the other: Russia, China, North Korea, Iran. Largely Autocracies, and one Autocracy with Chinese Characteristics™. All four have beef to pick with Western countries. They might press their advantages if they see that Western support for each other wavers (Ukraine and Israel). We’re already seeing them warm in relations with each other (Putin/Kim visit, arms deals between Russia/China and Russia/N. Korea). They might form their own NATO style Bloc which would be stronger than the paper tiger that is the CIS. Combined, they may very well have the ability to split the West’s priorities if internal division is strong.

I think it’s going to get even more tense the further this decade goes on. The dice that is the US Presidential election may decide the next big moves of these nations.

    someguy3, (edited )

Don’t forget Pakistan and India and their weird alliances. Though I think the possible war part is on hold because of the floods.

As for China they are probably shitting their pants when they saw what corruption did to the Russian military. They have to crack down on corruption, make sure their military is up to actual snuff, which pushes back any invasion hope.

i kind of can’t believe how long my Seasonic PSU is lasting. It’s been on continuously for the last like, 12 years. unreal

    papalonian,

Have you tried unplugging it with things powered on to make sure the battery is working? The batteries are supposed to be replaced every couple years, I found out when I started having power outages last winter and my (seasonic) PSU just turned off when the power flickered and PC was running. I bought a replacement battery off Amazon for cheap and it was easy to swap out.

    pacoboyd,

PSU is different than UPS. PSU is the Power Supply Unit and doesn’t have a battery. UPS are Uninterruptable Power Supplies and do have batteries. Seasonic only makes PSU’s.

    papalonian,

Yup that’s my bad, I misread the acronym and I guess imagined the brand of UPS I had.
